Hiking (Snowshoeing) 5:31:48 intensity: (2:00:00 @0) + (3:31:48 @1) 12.01 km (27:38 / km) +902m 20:05 / km

Epic snowshoe up to the summit of Mount Ida with a good group of 12 people (Woods Family minus Adam but plus Emil (Swedish exchange student), a couple of cousins, some young family friends, some old family friends, and a bunch of us Bakkers) and then we caught up to Connors and some other guy on the way up. We broke trail for part of the way up (Connors had taken a different route), but ended up being the first group up after about 2/3 of the way up. Super busy day for the trail - I bet nobody else will do it all year.

Not much snow at the bottom (6 to 8 inches), and then up to around a meter on top, so pretty tough work breaking trail at the top, so really nice to cycle through the group.

Group shot using a timer on a backpack up at the top. Got the shot first try!

View to the northeast with Fly Hills on the left, Bastion Mountain on the Right, Shuswap Lake (Salmon Arm Bay) centre right, and just the edge of Salmon Arm poking through the trees.

Westward view showing Deep Creek (bottom right) Gardom Lake (just above it), Enderby Cliffs (centre).

Super cool hoar frost only on one side of the summit mountain ridge.

GPS data available to everyone by clicking that little globe up there.

Feet hurting a bit on the way up, but hurting a fair bit on the second half of the way down.

Counted at something around 3/5 time.

Skiing - Classic 1:00:09 intensity: (10:26 @1) + (49:43 @2) 10.46 km (5:45 / km) +217m 5:13 / km
ahr:144 max:164

Easy ski up at Larch Hills after dropping Lillian off at work. Was supposed to be helping time the fun race, but they did not end up needing me so I brought Jonathan back home.

I knocked a few more trails off the to do list - I am just left with part of East Dales, Sentinel Connector, and the Far East (not yet groomed this year) to do on the groomed network. I haven't really done any ungroomed trails yet this year except (sort of) down to Tom's Shelter today. Hoping to get Devil's Lunge and Greenway/Treebeards at some point this year.

Feeling a little bit tired today, so kept it rather short in advance on the big snowshoe expedition tomorrow where I will likely be breaking trail a lot.

ahr:137 max:162

Easy classic distance ski up at Larch Hills in the fresh snow. Great grip with VR45.

Not gonna list where I went, just click the globe and see the track if you want to - it is visible to everyone.

Skiing - Classic 1:03:39 intensity: (26:42 @1) + (36:57 @2) 11.88 km (5:21 / km) +200m 4:56 / km
ahr:141 max:163

Easy morning classic ski at Larch Hills after dropping Lillian off at work. Up Metford, Bilbo's Bog, Gullan's, up Plantation and then the road. Down Baby Moonwalk, Willow Switch, and up Heart Break Hill. Back across Frodo's Bog (still lots of sticks and some soft spots/water - not good for the lantern ski this evening), then Gullan's Hotshot, down around Ermine Wiggle, and then up to Pika Lane (Shortcut), the Omega, Chalet Loop, and Marathon Loop.

Nice skiing out there today - overall good conditions. A couple of spots could use a little more snow though - but the next couple of days should fix that.

Foot held up well - going to continue with lots of classic skiing and some running for the next little while.

Thursday Dec 27, 2018 #

Note

Went to Physio this morning - went fairly well. Back is getting better, have a potential idea for the foot. Not getting my hopes up too high though.

Running 1:07:29 intensity: (2:32 @0) + (27:16 @1) + (37:41 @2) 7.16 km (9:26 / km) +150m 8:32 / km
ahr:140 max:163

Easy run with Lillian (after picking her up from work) on some of the Snowshoe trails up at Larch Hills in the dark. Moose, Bail Out, Gullan's, and Interpretive Trail were all nice and well packed, but on Mom's Loop we were punching through every three to four steps, which really slowed things down.

Skiing - Classic 1:40:00 [1] 19.0 km (5:16 / km)

Easy classic ski at Larch Hills. Foot tends to be more aggravated with skate skiing, so bailed on ski practice (which was skate) and just went for an easy distance ski. Foot was hurting off and on, but nothing too bad.

ahr:142 max:164

Easy run with Dad in South Canoe. Foot hurting on the uphill (starting after around the standard 10min), but surprisingly not as bad on the downhill.

Note

One of the things that I had not thought about when switching over to Linux, was that I no longer have a whole bunch of different fonts that were installed by default on windows. So today I chased around a bunch of fonts that I have used on various orienteering map layouts, so that is all up and functional again.

Skiing - Classic 1:28:05 [1] 15.71 km (5:36 / km) +278m 5:09 / km

Easy classic ski after dropping Lillian off at work.

Foot did decently, was feeling it off and on but not too bad, towards the last bit the north hub it was a steady 1, so decided to call it a ski.

Went through Gullan's Connector - it is going to take a decent amount of work to brush out, a chainsaw is probably in order. Good news is there is nothing "huge" that will need to be taken out.

ahr:132 max:149

Got a solid 13 minutes into the run without my foot hurting. About 20 minutes in I was up to a 3/10, but it didn't really get any worse, so I kept going for a little while longer.

Ran around the new little trail system by the new cemetery, tried to cover every trail in the park to get a rough trail network for when I map this area next spring.

Running 37:24 intensity: (18 @0) + (22:08 @1) + (9:55 @2) + (5:03 @3) 4.04 km (9:16 / km) +145m 7:51 / km
ahr:132 max:163

Trying to go for an easy run with Dad in Park Hill. Despite stretching for about 20 minutes just before the run, foot started hurting after only about 10 minutes in, stopping and stretching did not help as much as normal, and had to cut it short alternate walking/jogging back to the car. Very frustrating at the moment.

ahr:152 max:169

Skiing with the team up at Larch Hills. Just couldn't keep the heart rate down, feeling dead tired, and my foot was hurting with every stride. Decided I was doing more harm than good and bailed after around 35 minutes (about 10 minutes coming back down the hill).

Running 1:01:01 [1] 6.81 km (8:58 / km) +315m 7:17 / km
ahr:134 max:161

Easy run with Rachel at lower Postill exploring a potential replacement for the Spion Kop area (it ended up being smaller and not as good as expected). This area was a little on the steep side (better than Academy Hill was by a long shot though), but has interesting trails (roads, quad tracks, singletrack), contours (negative topography, mostly ridge/re-entrant), rock features (cliffs, boulders, rocky ground), vegetation (mostly (75%) white forest, some slash, some thicker green), and water (ponds, creeks, marshes). Nice variety in a small area.

I think we will be replacing the Saturday afternoon Spion Kop with this area.

In other news, the foot acted as usual, starting to hurt around 18 minutes into the run, stopped and stretched a couple of times, but was fairly well behaved.

Exams are done, back home in Salmon Arm for the rest of the year.

Ski practice at Larch Hills with the team. First skate ski of the year, and was hurting a fair bit trying for keep up with people who have been skiing and training consistently.. Ladder interval session 1 2 3 4 3 2 1 minutes with 2 minutes rest between each.

Had physio this morning, helped with the back issues, but didn't really get to the foot, so, heading back on the 27th.

First time skiing this year! Went with the medium speed oldest group, which was a nice slow easy ski pace for the first time out. Beautiful skiing in fresh powder and falling snow.

Hip flexors are tight now, otherwise feeling pretty good. Physio tomorrow.

Easy ride in the cold up and over Upper Canyon Road, then up the backside of Knox. Nice view at the top, threw on my spare shirt, and starting come down the front of Knox - absolutely freezing, so bailed on that plan onto a trail that I had never been on (rather sketchy with the thin little mostly road tires), and popped out in some super rich people's subdivision. Road back home up through Glenmore with a quick stop to pick up some groceries.

I am trying to be nice to my foot as much as I can, trying to do some down the cross-training end of things instead of running. Still going to run some for sanity sake, I can only stationary bike so much without losing it.

Physio is booked for the 12th.

1 Final Down, 4 to go (and a lab report by midnight and a paper by the end of the week).

I am still amazed at the quality of pictures taken by phones. Take the header image of https://skilarchhills.ca/ which is taken by a Moto G3 - a low-end phone (below $250CDN) released 3 years ago.

I wrote this in my chemistry lab, then figured it would be frowned upon and took it out (but I liked it so much I had to put it somewhere):
Molecular orbital theory to rule them all and in the darkness molecular soup bind them.

Route to Christmas Day #3 - Got the correct route.
9 PM

Biking 32:00 [1] 10.0 km (3:12 / km)

You know when a lab is due at midnight and needs to be submitted on paper, and the building closes at 11:00 (so really it is due then) and you finish it at 9:30pm (because you were studying for a final that is worth 50% of the mark instead of the lab in a different class worth 3%), so you ride to school and back at 10:00 at night.

ahr:137 max:162

Evening de-stresser run.

Got through 20 minutes without problems with my foot, then starting hurting quite a bit, so was go, stop & stretch, go, etc.

Accidentally ended up on a trail that just got skinnier and skinnier and then ended up on this really cool spree slope. Wouldn't have been an issue, and would actually have been fun, if not for the elderly gentleman walking his dog (which was barking profusely, but was otherwise well-behaved) on the road on the bottom watching me come down...

Route to Christmas is back on WorldOfO. Always a nice study break.

Note

If this actually happens I might need some ice skates. Ponds will be frozen but not snow covered. Weird weather.
5 PM

Running 45:00 [1] 8.0 km (5:38 / km)

Garmin Connect not syncing with Attackpoint properly for me right now.

Got out for a de-stresser run to break up the studying. Unfortunately, things didn't go great on this run: my right foot hurt pretty much throughout and I had to stop several times to stretch it out. I got a bloody nose that wouldn't stop bleeding even when walking and pinching it, so had to sit down on a lot and pinch it harder for a while, a trail I was on just ended in some recent construction that was a big mud pit. But it was still really nice to get out.
