Monday - Midterm (in Chemistry 220 - Basically all the different chemistry bonding theories, trends, etc. - so not exactly a push over). - 4 Hour Organic Chemistry Lab (I was there for 3 hours and 55 minutes of it...) - Chem Pre-lab due - Chem Post-lab (about 9 pages) due Tuesday - Advanced Organic Chemistry Midterm Wednesday - Chem 330 (Spectroscopy) Assignment Due - Chem 330 (Spec.) Midterm
Rest of the week if fairly tame in comparison - a few labs and whatnot, but nothing serious.
Huzzah - back to studying, just needed a quick rant for a break.
I was counting on this data for one of the OART events (Spion Kop). It might get scaled back a bit to only a sprint map portion of forest mapping. There is existing 2 meter contours of the area - it will just mean a bunch of tracing since I can't get my hands on raw LiDAR.
The bigger impact is on potential karttapallautin mapping that I had been planning on doing to be able to get some better O training in next fall around Kelowna. Looks like that might get delayed until after I have graduated from this university.
Running1:15:32 7.27 km (10:23 / km) +218m9:02 / km ahr:141 max:187
Roughly 3x5 minute hill-bounding interval workout with the ski team.
Games (European Handball) 15:00 [1] ahr:157 max:176
Handball afterwards with the ski team.
Garmin battery died - I thought I had charged it up beforehand, but I guess I need to start watching to see if it is actually going or if my brain is going.
And back up from the grocery store with as much stuff as can fit in any backpack - and it was really heavy.

Core Strength20:00 [1]
Some (mostly core) strength with a good amount of stretching afterwards. I have a distinct lack of core right now, so starting to work on building that back up.
Shins are hurting when I head down stairs right now.
Running48:40 8.0 km (6:05 / km) +45m5:55 / km ahr:135 max:156
I did some internet sleuthing last night, and figured out a few different options for bike pumps, and decided Canadian tire was the right balance of within running distance from my basement and price. This was the run mostly down the hill via a longer route but with more trail. Right shin hurting a bunch in the usual place, so had to stop and stretch it out a few times.
Running46:59 7.32 km (6:25 / km) +134m5:53 / km ahr:144 max:170
Forgot to bring any food with me, so ended up buying the most nutritious item at the checkout of Canadian tire - sugar coated gummy worms.
Run back home - except walked the long hill. Leg behaved pretty well. Shorter more direct route, but with more climb and almost no trail - but was able to run on edge of the road most of the way - so got gravel running surface for most of it which was nice.
Got back home with the pump - tire seems to be holding air.

On a related note - I looked at using public transit for this trip instead of running. In both directions it took longer to take transit then it would to run even if I arrived at the bus stop as the bus left. There was one bus switch mid-route. This seems to be a recurring theme in Kelowna for anything less than about a 8km running distance away.
I do not see how anybody expects people to take public transit when the connections are this poorly laid out/service is this infrequent. If I can run (and I am by no means in good shape or an excellent runner) can beat the busing option, the busing option has failed as far as I am concerned.
So this morning I noticed that my bike tires were starting to get a little bit flat, so I grabbed my little hand pump, and started pumping up the rear tire. What I did not know was that the seal on the pump was gone, and I successfully deflated my rear tire to around 10-15psi before I realized. With class starting in 20 minutes, I ended up riding on that to school. I had to avoid all the little rocks, each time I would ride over one I could feel the tire bottoming out. Not fun.
Whoever came up with the journal, year, volume, issue, page number system was a genius.
On a completely unrelated note, next time I decide to leave most of both the Chemistry pre-lab and post-lab for the day before they are due tell me it is a fabulous idea.
Running2:30:06 17.53 km (8:34 / km) +675m7:11 / km ahr:154 max:174
Forgot to charge up my garmin - so it died a little ways into the run. Got time and distance from Alexander. Hoping to get a gpx track soon, but we'll see how that goes.
A few pictures...
View from about halfway up looking east towards Kelowna. W. R. Bennett Bridge over Okanagan lake visible.
View looking slightly more north from the same location as picture #1
View from summit of Mount Mayman looking north-west. Terrace Mountain (generally the first to get snow in the fall along with Big White) approximately in the centre of the picture. Note the huge set of cliffs - this picture doesn't really do them justice - about 400m drop I think.
Artificial reservoir on the way back down the mountain. A couple of signs (one of which has been used for target practice a few times) with phone numbers on them of who to call if the dam looks in a dangerous situation. Dam was looking in good shape when we were there, not in danger of breaching with less than 100L of water being contained.
We started the hike at 4°C, got up to where everything was still frozen solid, and by the time we got back down to the car it was 8°C.
Starting mapping for OART a bit - mostly because the Cadet camp (who still hasn't entirely confirmed permissions...) wants their map connected to another Sage map. Also partly because I'm a little bored with making school maps in Toronto - want something a little more interesting to work on as well.
Vernon actually provided some Open Data sometime in the last year since I last checked, so I downloaded about 3gb of stuff today - 600mb of contours and 2,4gb of imagery. The imagery is in a really awkward file type .ecw so I'm going to have to have some fun in qgis to figure it all out.
Its only like four city blocks total - so shouldn't take very long (a couple of hours once all the basemap stuff is figured out).
Athletes get basic trail maps with 17 checkpoints to get and a 90 minute time window. Coaches get bikes and a 10 minute delay. Every time an athlete is caught 7 minutes is added to their time.
Got win #2 with the team today of the 6(?) years it has been happening.
More mapping for Toronto today - knocking a few more school maps off the to do list. Need to start doing homework sometime soon though - paid procrastination can only go on for so long...

Biking (Commute) 15:00 [1] (sick)
Starting to feel a little bit better today, not as much of a sore throat. Nose is like a leaky faucet though - won't stop running. Feeling a little tired as well, so just going to be nice to myself for another couple of days.

Biking14:30 [1]
Home a little bit late, worked on the Geography lab at school after class time ended to try and get something out of the way - almost got it done. A couple of little tiny things to finish off on it.
Didn't do any homework today... caught up on some email and built a school map start to finish for Toronto O-Club.
Nothing else due this week at school, but next week I have 2 midterms and a ridiculous number of labs due. Need to start putting the pedal down tomorrow, can't slack off forever.
Caught somebody's cold at bcoc. Fever and sore throat so far. Lots of sleep and little homework the next few days... I've run myself into the ground a bit.

Rushing to school for 9:30 this morning - only to remember I start at 10:30....
Every other morning is 8:00, so this one is harder to remember I guess.
