Biking (Mountain) 1:15:00 [1]

Easy rise with dad and a few of his friends at rubberhead. Hoping to get some intervals in tomorrow, longer ride on Saturday at Latch Hills, then Revelstoke on Sunday. Next week somewhat up in the air. At least a couple of days in revelstoke mapping, and then Wednesday in Kamloops as per usual.

Wednesday May 30, 2018 #

4 PM

Orienteering (Setting Controls) 1:05:00 intensity: (50:00 @0) + (15:00 @1)

7 PM

Orienteering (Control Pick-Up) 20:00 [1]

8 AM

Mapping 5:04:02 intensity: (3:40:00 @0) + (1:24:02 @1) 12.33 km (24:39 / km) +327m 21:46 / km

More MacPherson mapping:
Forgot the bug spray, back to the car, then back up into the map. Green, white, black, white, blue, white, white, blue, brown, white, green, white, yellow (uhh, what?), white, white.

Still looking absolutely gorgeous out there. A shame that most of the terrain is around 1km from all the parking options (although there is some decent stuff on the way there).
10 PM

Streching/Rolling 35:00 [0]

Haven't been doing enough of this, and have been paying the price... Having summer issues with my leg again.

Monday May 28, 2018 #

Note

When you camp out overnight, but forget to bring the tent, or the lighter for the stove, or the breakfast cereal ... clearly I need to improve something.
11 AM

Mapping 6:04:29 intensity: (4:34:29 @0) + (1:30:00 @1) 13.5 km (27:00 / km) +345m 23:56 / km

MacPherson mapping. White, white, white, black, brown, blue, white, (tiny bit of green), white, white, white. Beautiful.

Running 1:40:00 [1] 14.0 km (7:09 / km)

Morning run in South Canoe.

11 AM

Biking (Mountain) 1:05:00 [2]

Moving equipment between biking races out on the trails. Full day of timing, and got a ride in!

Friday May 25, 2018 #

9 AM

Mapping 3:56:30 intensity: (3:00:00 @0) + (56:30 @1) 7.3 km (32:25 / km) +225m 28:05 / km

More mapping today (I camped out on the map last night). Green, green, yellow, green, white, green, white, green. Bugs all the way, but was liberally doused in bug juice which made things bearable.

Bailed a little early, didn't feel like mapping the rest of the green today. 1 more day of green and yellow with green mapping, then should be white, blue, and black all the way.
3 PM

Running 1:02:50 intensity: (36:22 @1) + (26:28 @2) 8.35 km (7:31 / km) +222m 6:38 / km
ahr:145 max:168

Easy run after mapping. A little bit tired and hot, but needed to grab some trail GPS tracks, and was curious how accurate they would be while running. Turns out that walking, and checking with other landmarks is much better, but I now have a rough idea of the terrain (very white!).

Thursday May 24, 2018 #

12 PM

Mapping 3:44:24 intensity: (3:00:00 @0) + (44:24 @1) 8.03 km (27:56 / km) +266m 23:58 / km

Started out white, got green. Nice little thunderstorm in the middle (with a solid sprint to the car to avoid some rain). Lots of mosquitoes.
6 PM

Mapping 1:04:11 [1] 3.0 km (21:22 / km) +119m 17:51 / km

After dinner quick map, but wasn't worth much. Too many mosquitoes, forgot to put on bug juice.

Running 16:22 intensity: (4 @0) + (7:56 @1) + (7:53 @2) + (29 @3) 2.41 km (6:47 / km) +62m 6:00 / km
ahr:134 max:152

Running 54:15 intensity: (25:38 @0) + (28:37 @1) 3.44 km (15:46 / km) +46m 14:47 / km
ahr:104 max:131

10 AM

Mapping 1:20:00 intensity: (1:00:00 @0) + (20:00 @1) 5.0 km (16:00 / km)

Extending a little bit off the edge of the Silver Slope map. There were a couple of trails going across the hill just above the edge of the map, so just extended the map up 100m or so to them. Now around 60% of the north boundary of the map is a trail, and the other three edges are very solid. Makes it a better forest map for beginners.
5 PM

Tennis 40:00 [1]

Tennis with Dad in the heat.

Monday May 21, 2018 #

9 AM

Orienteering 1:25:10 intensity: (3:36 @1) + (9:49 @2) + (58:39 @3) + (13:06 @4) 11.28 km (7:33 / km) +254m 6:47 / km
ahr:160 max:183

Sage Stomp Long Race.

Had a slow start, didn't focus on the race well. Blew several of the first controls, was going too slow and reading too much detail.

Had a good middle of the race, generalizing well and reading just enough of the map to navigate well. Then blew a few of the last couple of controls as I didn't read enough of the map/misread my control description.

Orienteering 1:00:39 intensity: (42:59 @1) + (6:28 @2) + (11:03 @3) + (9 @4) 4.34 km (13:59 / km) +108m 12:26 / km
ahr:131 max:170

Catching features exercise.

Watch got stopped mid-training, so added an approximate time and distance.

Running 10:06 intensity: (2:11 @0) + (5:48 @1) + (1:50 @2) + (17 @3) 0.92 km (11:02 / km) +68m 8:02 / km
ahr:119 max:151

Run to start of corridor-O.

Orienteering 32:27 intensity: (30:57 @1) + (1:30 @2) 2.0 km (16:14 / km) +27m 15:12 / km
ahr:114 max:143

Corridor-O in a group with Rachel, Ben, Alexander, and Adam. Rather poor orienteering, but lots of fun.
12 PM

Orienteering 30:33 intensity: (30:02 @1) + (31 @2) 1.8 km (17:01 / km) +40m 15:19 / km
ahr:106 max:140

Contours only. Getting tired/hungry. Going super slow. Didn't really feel the contours the same way as the mapper did. Normally don't have any real trouble with these, but this was really bad for me.
3 PM

Orienteering 22:40 intensity: (20 @1) + (14 @2) + (10:15 @3) + (11:51 @4) 3.97 km (5:43 / km) +67m 5:16 / km
ahr:168 max:182

Bunkers Bench "Sprint".

Contouring exercise by Brent. Adam Woods was my coach for the weekend. Great start to the weekend.

Orienteering 17:38 intensity: (1:00 @1) + (1:38 @2) + (13:02 @3) + (1:58 @4) 2.63 km (6:43 / km) +53m 6:06 / km

Running 10:20 intensity: (2 @0) + (10:18 @1) 2.0 km (5:10 / km) +41m 4:41 / km
ahr:117 max:127

Debrief from morning training, and run/walk back to the camp from the start. Counted at roughly half time.
3 PM

Running 4:02 [1] 0.3 km (13:24 / km) +10m 11:26 / km

Run to afternoon training start.

Orienteering 53:13 [1] 3.94 km (13:30 / km) +78m 12:17 / km

Aiming off compass exercise. Good compass work, definitely still a weak point in my orienteering, and was my main focus for the weekend.

Up Mount Ida from the fruit farm. Yes, I barely went anywhere, but go have a look at the climb and then judge. Mostly walking on the way up, jogging the less steep hills, and running on the way down. The highest 2km have a lot of deadfall on them, and around 10% of the trail was snowcovered for that section which together made speed very inconsistent and hard to get into a running rhythm.

Pictures to come, but have a map to finish up this afternoon that is to be used this weekend, so gotta get that done before I visit AP again.

Making a sprint standard map of Bunker Bench for Sage Stomp. Quit once it hit 34°C. Hopefully I got enough fieldwork done and Jackie hasn't planned courses beyond where I've worked.

GPS track hidden to prevent any possible Sage Stomp spoilers.

Note

Volunteer timing the Salty Dog (In a nutshell: 6.5 hour mountain bike race, complete as many laps as you can) all day today. Can't actually log any of it as actual training, but was occupied all day outside, and way less than of it than you expect was actually sitting/standing still.

Endless problems with timing today, partly just the usual things, but definitely exacerbated by using new software:
- power/battery issues
- failing hardware
- Lack of volunteers (only one spare, so it took us more than 2 hours to cycle the entire team out so everyone could have lunch)
- Incompetent volunteers (I really hate saying this because I know how important having volunteers is, but we had one today who just couldn't deal with the high intensity of the race and didn't seem to recognize she wasn't doing the job)
- New software not having the functions we needed.
- Tech support of new software being busy helping another event
- the list goes on and on.

All things considered, as expensive as the initial outlay for SI is, it is really quite a nice simple system to use that requires fairly small prep times.

Note

Going to be a long day tomorrow, have an entire sprint map to fieldcheck/make in Kamloops. If I have any spare time, I should set some courses for the Wednesday event and fieldcheck it, but I don't think that's going to happen...

Biking 1:20:00 [1]

Easy evening ride.

Went up climb, prudential, upper triangle, bear den, road to the tower. Up Flipside, down Fake News, back to the tower. Down lower schitzo, KC connector, paranoia right, and down PPT2.

Was hoping to do the extra climb up and do Paranoia Left/Lee's trail/P2/Undercut, but light was fading and didn't want to get stuck in the dark.

Not sure on the distance, garmin died around 5 minutes in (guess I should actually charge it now and then).

Thursday May 10, 2018 #

Note

Spent 8 hours drafting things today, but forgot to schedule the run in. Gotta stop doing that before it becomes a habit. Got the Toronto Map done and ready for fieldchecking. Next up: Bunker Bench Sprint Map in Kamloops. Hoping for a 2 day project, but might end up being 3, we'll see. It's relatively featureless terrain besides contours and cliffs.

In other news, I'm most of the way towards my level 200 officials, so with any luck will be up to at least partial level 300 by the end of the year.

Run up through Hillcrest and into the New Cemetery under construction. Came back through the new trail alliance trails, they have built another small loop onto the existing trail this spring. Ran back along 30th, looped around through Little Mountain and then Shuswap Middle on the way home.

Right foot was starting to feel it starting around the 30 min mark, so need to start stretching and rolling that calf a lot more again. If it keeps up I'll head back to physio again.

Started working on another Toronto map today, hoping to be done by the end of the week.

(rest day)

Catching up on sleep, emails, etc.

Back to work mapping/organizing tomorrow.

Note

Watched the EOC sprint today on YouTube. Looked like some interesting terrain.

Running 15:00 [2]

Note

Got the HPP Application submitted with 55 minutes to spare, assuming the deadline is midnight Pacific Time, otherwise I guess it is late.

Course maps and results for OART all uploaded. Video and Survey to follow. If you have any pictures from the event, please send them to me, I barely have any.

Time to catch on sleep tonight, equipment clean-up and everything tomorrow, and another trip to kelowna to return keys/get back damage deposits at some point on Monday or Tuesday.

Various and assorted running around like crazy highly stressed out. OART Day 1 over. So far, so good.

Now to sort out equipment, get things ready for tomorrow, and write up my JWOC application. Another enjoyable evening.

Friday May 4, 2018 #

Note

Everything is all set to go for OART.
3 PM

Biking 1:11:49 [1] 10.93 km (6:34 / km) +410m 5:32 / km

De-stressing easy ride with Dad in South Canoe. Almost the same route as yesterday, but did the road around instead of bears den, and added the extra climb up the road to Paranoia Right.

Just a few things left to do for OART tonight, make sure all of our permissions certificates are printed out and in order, organize equipment.

Then I need to do most of my Supplementary JWOC application...

Thursday May 3, 2018 #

3 PM

Biking (Mostly Mountain) 1:21:38 [1] 12.35 km (6:36 / km) +482m 5:32 / km

Easy ride out to South Canoe, then climb, crosscut, lower triangle, mo buddah, lower schitzo, banjo, flying nun with Pia, Rachel, Jess, and Mhari.

Maps for OART are all printed, control description cutting is tonight, along with setting up MeOS files for each race. Tomorrow is for anything I've forgotten, my supplementary JWOC application, and to catch up on emails that I haven't gotten back to people on that have accumulated over the last week.

Next week is for mapping Toronto, and organizing BCOCs.

Middle course at Canoe Creek. Going pretty slow today, a little bit tired and want to keep the energy up for the upcoming weekend. Things are still ticking along smoothly, event package went out as scheduled, registration closes tonight (so hopefully will have to throw together a couple of new bibs!). Rest of this evening is finishing up layouts for the maps to be printed, test prints at home. Down to the print shop tomorrow.
To Do List:
- Figure out the numbers/heat distribution
- Make up a Big Poster Sized Sheet to Track Progress Through Heats
- Buy Pens and Sharpies
- Print Everything

Orienteering 1:00:00 [1] 8.0 km (7:30 / km) +4m 7:29 / km

Double checking control locations/maps for OART events #3/4.

Feeling pretty good about things in general, frankly the biggest issue at the moment is map bags, but that's pretty minor. Things seem to be shaping up well.

GPS track hidden, time rounded by a little bit, and distance also to prevent any sort of spoiling of OART courses.

Running 54:30 intensity: (9:30 @1) + (45:00 @2) 6.24 km (8:44 / km) +324m 6:56 / km

You have until Wednesday night at Midnight to register for OART, so get it done already!

Running with Pia above Lake Country. First time exploring a new trail system, also trying to judge orienteering suitability as LiDAR data for this area becomes available within the next year. The part of the park we were in was rather hilly, and generally not all the interesting for orienteering, but other parts that we saw looked like they could be decent.

It was another stunningly beautiful day in the Okanagan. If you were holding out because of the possibility of rain, the forecast is looking pretty darn good for the weekend. Expect more of this:

Looking south towards Kelowna from a hill on our run today just north of Kelowna.
