Skate ski up at Larch Hills playing follow the groomer. Absolutely gorgeous conditions - felt like the middle of February especially on Whoopee loops. Was hoping to be out for longer - but got a ride up with mom who needed to be home by around noon - so cut the ski a little short.

Back in Salmon Arm for Easter weekend - so had access to a vehicle and got out on a map. Of the Salmon Arm forest maps, Haines Creek is at the lowest elevation so went out there. Mostly snow free - although in some of the more open depressions there was up to 1.5ft of snow. It rained just before I got there - so the forest was super slippery and I got absolutely soaked - but nice to get back out in the forest.

Rather distracted by wildlife with 3 white tailed deer, a pileated woodpecker, and an owl! First time I've seen an owl in a few years.

Biking 59:27 [1] 18.48 km (3:13 / km) +273m 3:00 / km
ahr:118 max:157

Meant to go for a run today - but City of Kelowna decided they wanted to know all the control locations for the two events along the waterfront so had a lot of computer drafting and course setting. Ran out of time to get the run in since I needed to pick up new headphones from the post office (I can never get parcels to deliver to the condo unfortunately) - so had to bike instead. This evening was taken up by an extra credit lecture by a visiting professor about Canada's support of the 2009 military coup in Honduras. Quite an interesting talk, but only around 1hr so never really got into any of the meat - felt a little superficial.

On the bright side - the two events that were mine to plan for OART are done - with small modifications to come once I finish the map!

Labs (and lab exams!) are done! Went for a celaboratory run with Alexander on mostly roads around Academy and Quail. Foot held up perfectly, so keeping up the stretching and I think I'll get back into mostly running again.

Armchair-O 20:00 [0]

Got the p-chem assignment done with a bit of time to spare - so decided to get a bit of armchair-o done.

Looking at a Hungary training that the Austrian JWOC team is training on.
http://3drerun.worldofo.com/2d/index.php?idmult%5B...

I think I'm getting a bit better at picking out what features I want to use in this sort of terrain. Looking at GPS tracks I am doing better at picking a good compromise between the fastest and safer routes and when to do which. Totally different story in the terrain though - never been on anything like this.

I think close to home - the most similar terrain is on a karttaplautin map of Mount Ida where the forest fire swept through. It's relatively inaccessible so I haven't made a proper o-map for it yet but I think it's worth a shot for training. Still completely covered in snow right now - but by the time exams end it might be open. There are some dirt-biking trails in this area that I could trace on the map as well. Here is a quick sample of that map:

Note

Since mapping season is starting up again, I'll let everyone know how my mapping works on my training log:
- All computer drafting is not logged on Attackpoint at all (if it is mapping I am paid for it is in an apprpriate spreadsheet - and if it is volunteer like OART it isn't tracked at all - too much work).
- Fieldwork is counted under the activity "Mapping" on attackpoint - and around 1/4 to 1/5 of it is counted at zone 1 and the rest as zone 0 depending on how physical the mapping is.

On another note - I have completely finished Okanagan College Kelowna Campus map, so that's one map for OART completely done! All the rest of the maps are in various stages of development:
- UBCO: nearly done
- Waterfront/City Park/Cultural District: needs fieldchecking (around 75% complete)
- Academy Hill: Lots left to do (maybe 20% finished)
- Mission Creek Re-Map: Need to import new 2m contours - trace some more ponds and a couple of trails - fieldchecking of trails (all forest mapped as OOB unfortunately since it is absolutely awesome terrain).

Mapping 4:00:00 intensity: (3:10:00 @0) + (50:00 @1)

Doing fieldwork at Okanagan College.

Map looks like it will be pretty good - a couple of things are more interesting than I expected, but there was one little chunk where an extra fence is a let down.

Had been on campus wandering around for around 3.75 hours when I got stopped by a security guard wondering what I was doing loitering around...I showed him the map I was making, explained what it was for and it all turned out fine. He was just doing his job - as friendly as could be expected. Frankly I'm surprised I wasn't stopped earlier! Not sure what he thought I was doing before I showed him, but he was rather surprised and it took him a while to figure out the jist of what the map was going to be used for.

Note

Spent 1.5 hours arguing with my Bluetooth GPS. It won. I went to bed defeated. Didn't get out training.

Armchair-O 10:00 [0]

Catching up on sleep that I fell behind on over the past week. Also got a fair bit of mapping for OART done - as well as a decent bit of Promo to the surrounding clubs.

Friday Mar 23, 2018 #

Note

Midterms are done - 2 weeks until finals start.

Had a good, long planning meeting with Alexander and Rachel today - we divided up the remaining work for OART, nailed some more things down, and pushed back the early bird registration deadline to next Wednesday and are contacting surroundings clubs asking them to send out emails to their members for us.

Lots of mapping to do over the next couple of more laid back weeks - hopefully doesn't rain too much this weekend so I can get a good chunk of it done.

One club that we aren't quite sure who to send an email to is COC. @Pink_Socks - if you are still reading my log and you think your club would be ok with letting it's membership know about our event, could you let me know who I should be contacting? Wasn't really sure from COC's contact page.

UBCO Dirty Dash team obstacle course race. Went with Rachel, David, and Annika. Had a pretty good run - we came second to an all male team made up of mostly UBCO cross country runners. We were only 50 seconds behind.

Lots of fun! Hopefully will be able to find the pictures from the official photographers at some point.

(rest day)

An interesting read: http://fasterskier.com/fsarticle/medals-clean-spor...

Having more trouble with my right foot again - not sure what to do - giving things a break today.

Studying for Statistics Lab Quiz (only studied around 1.5 hours for that today) that is tomorrow and O Chem midterm on Friday (around 5 hours of studying that today) and 4 hours of lecture today. I think I've got my Friedel-Crafts reactions and Electrophillic Aromatic Substitution down, but need to work on learning a few more random reagents retrosynthetic analysis questions.

ahr:144 max:177

P-chem lab and pre-lab took longer than expected - so dinner got pushed back so the run got pushed back into the dark. Got out for a decent evening run - happy that I recovered from the long ski well - glad I stretched yesterday evening. Was feeling slow and wanted to feel fast again - so put 1 fast km in during the middle of the run 3:45 which is ok for being in the dark on a wide trail (with a bit of snow and mud) I guess. Need to start introducing more proper interval sessions at this point in the year.

Last p-chem lab day tomorrow, but the big challenge at the moment is studying up for the Organic Chemistry midterm this Friday. Really need to do well on this one since I did very poorly on the first one.

Garmin battery died halfway through the run (haven't charged it in a while) - so approximated some time and distance for the last chunk.

Super easy recovery run/walk with Lindsay - who hasn't been running much. We had a good chat though.

Ended up catching up on sleep instead of mapping this morning. Did some more drafting of Okanagan College though - drafting work before fieldchecking is now around 80-90% complete for that map. I only have one building, one courtyard, and a parking lot left to draft.

Spending a whole bunch of time mapping Okanagan College Kelowna right now - but am planning on doing a chunk of the fieldwork for UBCO tomorrow morning so that part of one of the maps is done at least. Getting into that looking at a map every day business that a bunch of other people are doing - and actually logging it too.

On another note - the fire alarms went off throughout the apartment building where I live yesterday at around 6:00, so everyone trundled outside to the parking lot. One unit's sprinklers (on the 3rd floor) were going off and spraying water absolutely everywhere - which put out any fire if there ever was one. This unit was overlooking the parking lot where everyone evacuated out to, so we all had a great view as their deck was totally soaked and as it drained water into the garden bed below. No other sprinklers in the building went off 0 so all my stuff was just fine. It took around 20 minutes for the fire department to show up, a bit longer than I was expecting - but response was good with three full trucks. The unit with the sprinklers going off was checked out, sprinklers and alarm turned off, and we were allowed back into the building around 20 minutes later. An interesting experience.

I figured enough snow had melted to get out on my mountain bike for the first time this year. Went mostly on roads, but ended up on trail around the middle of the ride. Turns out that under the trees there is still a fair bit of snow on the trails, so ended up pushing the bike for large portion in the middle of the ride. Can't wait to get out riding some more!

Easy run along the waterfront in Salmon Arm. Leg/foot held up pretty well along the uneven half ice/half melting snow.

I think there is going to be some serious flooding this year - snowpack is well above normal. The big question is just how quickly it melts and with how much rain this spring.

Back to Kelowna this evening where I'll be until Easter. Time to go bury my head in a textbook for the next month and a half.

Running in the daylight for a change! Studied genetics for a while after classes, but was losing focus so decided a run was in order. Ran down to Mount Baldy since it doesn't have much tree cover so most of the snow has melted. Rather muddy in places, but overall not too bad. Didn't take a good route off the top of the mountain, and ended up bushwhacking and climbing down a rather steep embankment for a while to get back out to the road without going through people's backyards. Nice to get out for a run - now back to studying again.

You know when you have been processing data from your physical chemistry lab for 3+ hours and reach your answer only for it to be entirely wrong? So you painstakingly look back through all your calculations to see where you made a mistake - only to determine your calculations are perfect and you made a mistake when making the solutions in lab so all of your data is flawed and unusable? And the lab report is due the next day?

On a completely separate note, looks like I might not get out for my run tonight.
