Note

BAH! Incredibly frustrated with 2drerun right now. I have tried setting up the map about 5 times, about 1.5 hours of playing around with it, and it still refuses to work properly. Everything is a little out of wack. It doesn't seem to be on my end, because when I add one of the athlete's .gpx track directly as a template to the map file, it lines up perfectly, without any of the distortion. Anyone have a solution?

8 AM

Ski Orienteering (Skate) 1:09:19 [1] 10.91 km (6:21 / km) +152m 5:56 / km

Setting out controls, the first batch.
9 AM

Ski Orienteering 20:00 [2] 4.0 km (5:00 / km)

The second batch of controls, forgot to restart the GPS for this one. Guessing on distances, etc.
12 PM

Skiing - Skate 24:24 [1] 3.06 km (7:59 / km) +122m 6:39 / km

Picking up some controls. Went down Devil's Lunge - what a blast!

Note

GVOC has switched Membership and waivers to a digital format! High time we adopt this method too in my opinion. https://gvoc.whyjustrun.ca/events/view/3209

Note

Today was hardly a rest day, but didn't have any loggable training...

Was up at the Ski Hill all Morning and early afternoon doing timing volunteer - lots of dancing, etc. to keep warm.

Came home and shovelled the driveway. Went and printed maps, had supper, got all the orienteering stuff figured out for tomorrow, even synced the units.

Note

Lots of mapping for Toronto today. Finished off the section to the west of the river, finally figured out what was on the inside of a bunch around some of the central building courtyards that are externally accessible, and worked on the residences a bit. Now I just have around 4.5ish hours of residences left, then it's all fieldwork and corrections.

Mapping/Work to do in Order of Priority:
1. Finish off U of Toronto Mississauga Campus (5 hours initial passthrough, unknown amount post fieldwork...)
2. Start, Do, Finish Kensington Park in Burnbaby, BC (this is the map donated to the HPP silent auction, that is just now been ordered). Probably around 20 hours altogether.
3. Not mapping explicitly, but related to it, I need to get things together for applying for Jobs Grant funding for OBC/Sage for mapping/programming in the interior this coming year.
4. Finishing Kelowna OART mapping (around 20-30 hours left?)
5. More Toronto Maps?

So it's going to be a fun couple of months, with various and assorted mapping to do, mostly without deadlines - but a bunch at various points. Need to make sure I make time for training as well, which could be tricky.

Stationary Biking 1:00:00 [1]

Recovery Spin. Legs were hurting from yesterday.

Note

We seem to have hit the bare minimum of 10 people signed up for the Ski-O, so I guess it is going ahead. Now I just need to organize an entire event over the next two days.

EDIT: Course planning complete, should be fun. Tell your friends to come out. See updated descriptions and course info at: https://sage.whyjustrun.ca/events/view/3154

On another note, with minimal promotion through: my training log, the creation of a Facebook, Attackpoint, and WhyJustRun events, we now have 20 people who are signed up as interested in the Okanagan Adventure Running Tournament. https://sage.whyjustrun.ca/events/view/3157
Now we just need our permissions to come through, and me to finish up the mapping after I finish this first Toronto map.

I did just over 2 hours on Toronto map today, procrastinating the last chunk of residences by working over in Erindale Park. Hoping to get my side of the mapping done by the end of the weekend, although Saturday is a complete right off (timing a XC race), as is much of Sunday (organizing a Ski-O).

Attempt #2 at Mount Ida. We had already packed down the first 3-3.5km or so, so we made it quite a bit further this time, but was snowing the entire time. Made it up onto the ridge, where normally there would be a great view, but today just clouds and snowflakes. We turned around with about another 1.5km to go along the ridge to reach the main viewpoint with a 360 panorama. Lots of fun on the way down.

Skiing - Classic 1:03:13 [1] 10.48 km (6:02 / km) +223m 5:27 / km

Easy ski up in the cold at Larch Hills. South loops need another half a foot to a foot of snow to be in good shape - lots of sticks right now and even a few rocks. First time seeing the big new clearcut.

Rolling out the back, stretching the legs.

Back to work on mapping tomorrow, still a fair bit left to do on the UTM.

I don't particularly enjoy stationary biking, but with all the visiting today I didn't manage to get out to do anything else.

Skiing - Classic 2:05:00 intensity: (1:34:00 @1) + (30:00 @2) + (1:00 @4) 22.0 km (5:41 / km)

Easyish ski with Calvin, Ben, Alexander, and Aidan. They were pushing the pace pretty hard out of the start until about the far side of plantation, then things mellowed out. A couple of sprints near the end. Ditched slightly early to get Lillian to work on time. Beautiful skiing at Larch Hills right now.

Forgot my GPS today, so estimated distance from google earth.

Note
(rest day)

Last minute Christmas shopping, baking, etc.

Drafted a chunk of the eastern residences for University of Toronto Mississauga today, is starting to look a little better. The central campus is hard to draft, lots of construction within the last 5 years... Google imagery has some unfortunate shadows covering key areas between tall buildings, and streetview is missing a lot of buildings because it is 5 years old, except around the outside of the campus where it is newer than all the imagery.... Bing just doesn't have good enough resolution to pick out small details without help from google.

Side Note: It's hilarious that the University of Toronto Mississauga abbreviates to UTM.

First time out snowshoeing, so we (Dad, Mena, and I) decided to climb Mount Ida. We made it a little ways over half way up in around 20 inches of powder, sinking to the bottom with every step, and decided that was enough. Lots of fun.

Snowing all day, must be great snow for downhill and backcounty skiers.

Brought the GoPro out for the day: https://1drv.ms/v/s!AmVFm0Oq9tQFmXfp50UQ-_def25O

Counted at roughly 2/3 time.

Just noticed the conflict between Vancouver Sprint Camp and WIOL in Seattle. Very unfortunate timing the way things worked out.

ahr:127 max:172

2nd Skate ski of the year, first at Larch Hills. It hurt. Team Sprint style intervals, lots of fun. Had to leave a little bit early to get home with my parents since Simon and Lillian ended early.

Heart rate monitor dropped out again, getting rather frustrated with it. Need to start playing around with it, figure out if the battery is going, or the strap, or what. Should be able to troubleshoot with Jonathan's strap.
8 PM

Streching/Rolling 25:00 [0]

Stretching out the legs, and rolling out my back. Drafting maps in Toronto in the hunched over position is not good, need to move to the kitchen table every now and again.

Skiing - Classic 1:35:00 intensity: (1:05:00 @1) + (30:00 @2) 15.4 km (6:10 / km)

Easyish classic ski with the team at Larch hills . Lots of fresh snow, absolutely beautiful up there. Nice to be skiing with the team.

GPS died a little ways in, so totally guessing on distance. Well see when Rachel and Alexander post how well I did.

EDIT: Just measured using an OpenOrienteering Mapper (I have a map for the area, just not with vegetation), and turns out it was 15.4km.

Badminton 1:35:00 [2]

First time back at drop in badminton in salmon arm in around 10 months. Wasn't very good, but lots of fun.

Easy classic ski at Larch Hills. Went up Metford, around Ermine Loop, Reino's to South Hub. Up the Road to Cec's, Larch Lake Loop, back down the road adding in Frodo's bog. Whoopee loops, Panorama haven't been groomed yet.

Conditions were pretty good, all Ginzu grooming so far, but supposed to snow a lot tomorrow so I expect we'll get the big machine out later in the week. Chalet expansion looks excellent as well, and new sprint trails seem a little less in your face this year.

Note

Started the map file for U of Toronto Mississauga Campus today. Contour data isn't as good as I was hoping unfortunately - the data processing done on their end was pretty crummy (contours stopping and starting again). Bit annoying, will have to connect them together and fake missing sections a bit. Got georeferenced imagery - about 2 years old in, will supplement with cross checking with 2017 google imagery in the browser (have yet to figure out how to export this from google in a georeferenced format). Tracing starts tomorrow.

Just got home to Salmon Arm from Kelowna, skiing and training starting back up now - exams are done.

Note

I find the situation regarding doping and cross country skiing very sad and disappointing. I'm finding it very hard to cheer for Ustiugov and Bolshunov considering what the evidence suggests their team-mates have done, but at the same time they could be completely clean and Klaebo isn't. Who knows? But at any rate, I have very little faith in cross country skiing at the moment. Guess I'm just going to have to keep on watching Biathlon (not that it's any better, but there is more of a mental component).

Not convinced that path or crag was to spec today ... but I got it wrong.

Day 7 of WofO - I did the same thing - out to the road... just didn't screw up the middle of the leg this time sitting at my desk.

Day 8 of WofO - saw this leg earlier in the year too ... still sticking with the going back through the start and left on the road option.

2 of 5 Exams done, with another one tomorrow (Organic Chem - I've studied decently well for it - should be ok), and then another Saturday (MicroBi - I'm just going to cry myself to sleep now - I'm going to get butchered). Last exam is Thursday of next week (Cell Bio - should be fine - lots of time to study).

When you take a break from studying organic chemistry to look at course of the day:

Got the route right today, but got my path or crag wrong.

Tuesday Dec 5, 2017 #

Armchair-O 5:00 [0]

Path or Crag - Correct!

World of O, well... I have analyzed this leg before. Went right to the trail. I think the routes that he picked out were no good at all, the left option around all the green was second best pick next to the run to the trail choice.

Note

Went to my grandfather's funeral in Vernon this morning, then back to the apartment for a couple hours to settle down emotionally - then off to write my Calculus exam at 6:00 in the evening. Not a great day, but went fairly well all things considered.

On another note, we just got confirmation that Sage is hosting BC orienteering champs in Revelstoke in 2018!!!!! I was working on the maps starting last year, and will be finishing them up this year.

https://sage.whyjustrun.ca/events/view/3213

Here is a link to the event page, make sure you save the date - this terrain is excellent! A few map samples there, and one photo from the terrain. I couldn't find any that I'd taken of downtown Revelstoke (aside, Bart, if you read my log please send me a good picture if you have a chance!) The forest map has section reminiscent of Black Magic in Whistler, other parts of far more rolling hills with cliffs.

Most interior BC forest that are this wet (Kamloops and Okanagan are dry and therefore white) are fairly green (like around Salmon Arm), but MacPherson has a couple of things going for its "whiteness".

1. Around 100 years ago, massive forest fire swept through - destroyed pretty much everything (a few ancient charred stumps still left, but not many), so no fallen logs on most of the map, and most of the trees are fairly old growth. This means shading of forest floor and limited undergrowth
2. Limited logging - we lost a few mappable sections on the upper parts of the hill, but not too bad at all - mostly the steep hillside sections.
3. A couple areas of demonstration forest, where the government has sent crews in and systematically removed all potential forest fire fuel - so no logs on the ground, no low branches, no anything - just pristine white.

Armchair-O 10:00 [0]

Got the path or Crag wrong today, but pretty much got the World of O route to Christmas right. I have to be careful to do these before I read other people's logs - they have a habit of spoiling the routechoices.

Study Break

Sunday Dec 3, 2017 #

Armchair-O 10:00 [0]

Path or Crag - 3 for 3
Route to Christmas - 0 for 3

If this applies to school as well, I guess I better hope for true or false questions on finals instead of long answer.
10 AM

Running 45:30 intensity: (6:00 @1) + (39:30 @2) 7.61 km (5:59 / km) +59m 5:46 / km
ahr:143 max:157

Part 1 - Run to church. Was going to be late, so pushed it a little bit.

Running 1:02:22 [1] 9.59 km (6:30 / km) +198m 5:54 / km
ahr:58 max:102

Run home from church on a slightly more windy route - when through a couple of places in Rutland that I've never been before - and checked out a possible mapping location. Looks pretty good, but need to get the maps for OART done first (and a bunch in Toronto too) so this might bet pushed back for a full year.

Legs were pretty done by the end... walked up a couple of the last hills. needing lunch.

Heart rate monitor refused to work for some reason, so I dunno what's up with that.

Friday Dec 1, 2017 #

Armchair-O 10:00 [0]

World of O Route to Christmas Day 1 - Wrong route...
Path or Crag 25 Days of Christmas Day 1 - Nailed It! (but was too late to answer in the comments, so... no T-shirt for me)

And a few maps from Gswede's log.

I miss TGIF's log. It was so cool watching his training, seeing maps from everywhere.

4x5 minute zone 3 intervals with Rachel around the upper bit of quail flume trail. Fairly flat, and it was a loop, so sometimes hard to keep the heart-rate up on the downhill section.
