Note

Simply put, training this past week sucked.

- Monday: was a well deserved rest day after 6 hours or so in 3 days on the weekend.
- Tuesday: was a full day at school followed by a midterm the next day which I wanted to study for which took priority over a run.
- Wednesday: I started to feel crummy and decided it was best to take it easy.
- Thursday: I felt better so went for a good run with the zone 4 intervals. Good workout, if a little short. It was nice to get some running speed work in for the first time this year though.
- Friday: I didn't feel all that great, but good enough so I skied up South Canoe a little harder than I should have.
- Saturday: I bombed out of ski practice and more or less spent the entire afternoon alternating between recovering from that and writing my physics formal lab.
- Sunday: I felt slightly better than Saturday afternoon, but still around 50%, way lower than acceptable to do anything. Mom and Dad told me not to go running or skiing on my own just in case. Even decided not to go to soccer because I had such low energy.

- Monday (today): I walked to and from school which went alright, but energy levels are still really low. Legs feel dead like the past few days, and the brain has been shutting down as well just like it has over the past week.

Tested my blood sugar a few times this weekend to see if that was the cause, but blood sugar after I had eaten on Saturday was 7.1, and during one of the times I felt aweful on Sunday in was 5.9. Both very normal. Heart rate is also about normal, but I couldn't get it to drop very well after the intervals on Saturday, but who knows.

Have a head ache, dizziness, and general fatigue.

Will go see the doctor later this week if it doesn't get any better.

Even if I do get better this coming week won't be great for training either since I have 3 midterms, a formal lab (which I finished at 16 pages) and an essay due (on top of the usual assignments).

Skiing - Classic 50:00 [1] 13.0 km (3:51 / km)

Ski practice up at Larch Hills. Started off alright, felt a little low in energy, but not too bad.

The first interval hurt a lot and I was far slower than I was expecting, but the second one (all double pole) I just died. Totally ran out of juice.

Didn't do the third interval and just skied down the road back to the car.

Skiing - Classic 18:00 [3]

Friday Jan 27, 2017 #

Skiing - Skate 1:04:00 [3] 13.0 km (4:55 / km) +492m 4:08 / km

Skied up from South Canoe to lake view and back down. Good workout on the way up, a little chilly and a long squat on the way back down.

51 minutes up, 12 down.

Skiing - Skate 57:00 [1] 11.5 km (4:57 / km)

Running warm up/down 10:00 [1]

Games (soccer) 35:00 [2]

Lost 3 to 2 against the top team in the league. I was never on when they scored and was +1 on the night. Overall a good game for the team.

Saturday Jan 21, 2017 #

Skiing - Classic 1:47:00 [1] 21.1 km (5:04 / km)

Easy classic ski on my own down thensourh loops including to toms shelter and Lake view, then across reinos and up the road to Larch Lake loop. Came down whoopee south, panorama, baby moonwalk and Stigs.

Pretty good conditions, a little slow.

Friday Jan 20, 2017 #

Skiing - Skate 1:31:00 [1] 19.66 km (4:38 / km)

Nice ski up at Larch Hills just before it got dark. Ran out of groomed trail unfortunately though.

Thursday Jan 19, 2017 #

Note
(rest day)

Might have a cold coming on.

Wednesday Jan 18, 2017 #

Running 45:00 [1] 7.1 km (6:20 / km)

Easy evening run, need to do this sort of thing far more often. Really nice to get out, and the weather was very warm and mild.

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Really not sure what is wrong, but I just feel dead.

Badminton 1:40:00 [1]

Only 22 people there today, so no waiting. Got a decent workout in, but still need to get real running in. Plan is to do that tomorrow evening.

Just the calculus assignment and a tad bit of the physics lab left that is due this week. Tons due next week, plus the start of midterms already.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [1]

Strength 1:00:00 [1]

Finished lab early again so made it to strength for 2 weeks in a row! Pretty sure that's a record for this year!

Streching/Rolling 15:00 [0]

After strength.

Note

Training seems to be going okay so far, but I'm having difficulty getting some of the hours in espescially on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when I start school early and don't get off until it is dark out. When I get home I need to make sure I get something (either a run or homework) done in the hour that is free before supper.

Need to start doing more running.

Streching/Rolling 10:00 [0]

Back tightened up after doing homework, so rolled it out.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [1]

Games (soccer) 50:00 [2]

We lost again, 8-4, but I think I actually had a positive goal differential as well as 2 assists. Need to get more actual running in this coming week.

Note

Had about a 45 minute conversation with Marg and Brian Ellis, the new president of OABC, this afternoon.

We had a great conversation on how to grow the sport into new communities in BC, while still helping existing clubs (namely Kamloops) to survive and hopefully grow.

We started off by talking about how we managed to be successful in Salmon Arm - mostly the ski team, the wild soles trail running, and a tad of promotion.

It then went into plans for this coming summer, and how we could grow the sport around BC. It sounds like I might get a summer job traveling to various BC communities (likely Revelstoke, Vernon, Kelowna) with a couple of existing orienteers to work. I'd be making maps, setting up events, with the goal of getting a foundation for future clubs in each city. The idea is to hopefully get the former/inactive orienteers to come out and help organize events for excited new beginners.

This would likely take place through May/June, working with schools as well. Possibly some sort of follow up thing in August if I do not end up picking pinecones this year. Sometime in here I believe I am also making 2-3 decent sized forest orienteering maps around Salmon Arm/Sorrento.

Based on my Attackpoint profile, I have been consistently getting a few hits, so somebody is reading my training log now (notice that my training comments are longer than they used to be?) so any thoughts or ideas welcome!

Skiing - Classic warm up/down 30:00 [1]

Skiing - Classic race 55:00 [3] 17.0 km (3:14 / km)

Reino Loppet 2017.

I won the race, but Konrad didn't start so it seems like a bit of a hollow victory.

Skied with Brian and John Connor for most of the first lap, but dropped Brian and got dropped by John as we went up East Dales.

Overall quite happy with my race.

Armchair-O 10:00 [0]

Got my math lab done early, before the quiz opene, so continued on routechoice.co.

Skiing - Classic 35:00 [1] 7.0 km (5:00 / km)

Easy double pole ski on the lake.

Streching/Rolling 30:00 [0]

Watching "The Crown" on Netflix while stretching and rolling in front of the fire. Loppet day tomorrow!

Thursday Jan 12, 2017 #

Skiing - Classic 1:05:00 [1]

Ridiculously cold this morning, but its the one gap in my schedule when I can fit a ski in during the week.

I really enjoyed getting out, Mena went snowshoeing while I did.

Armchair-O 25:00 [0]

Sprint map training on routechoice.co

Not sure if the site is still actively being updated, but whatever maps are on there are great.

Link for myself of where I got to so I don't repeat maps next time: Link

Note
(rest day)

I don't like my schedule this semester. I can't make any weekday practices for skiing and I get out of class after it is dark 4 days a week.

Bio lab ran about half an hour over time today, so couldn't get a run in. Going skiing tomorrow morning at least.

Tuesday Jan 10, 2017 #

Badminton 1:35:00 [1]

My new schedule has me at school from 8:30 until 6:00 today, so no daylight for me. Went to badminton with dad instead. Run tomorrow.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [1]

Warm up for strength.

Strength 1:10:00 [1]

Got out of physics lab early, so managed to make it to strength almost on time!

Streching/Rolling 15:00 [0]

At strength.

Sunday Jan 8, 2017 #

Skiing - Classic 23:35 [3] 7.5 km (3:09 / km)

BC Cup #1 Interval Start Classic.

I raced fairly well, but didn't have the mental power the second time up rollercoaster and herringboned more than I needed to. This is probably what caused the 30second time difference between first and second laps which I'm not overly happy about.

I really felt the lack of fitness (particularly strength training for double pole across the flats) at the moment, but it was a vast improvement over the NORAM in Sovereign, so just need to keep things moving in that direction.

Loppet next week, then I need to start doing a lot more running for sprint camp. Running might actually start this week since I can't make weeknight ski practices with the lab schedule.

Skiing - Classic warm up/down 1:00:00 [1] 8.0 km (7:30 / km)

Approximate time and distance for both.

Armchair-O 1:00:00 [0]

Going through the second half of WorldOfO's Route to Christmas.

Skiing - Skate race 8:00 [5] 3.0 km (2:40 / km)

BC Cup #1

Sprint Free - 1000m.

First race on the sprint courses (which I did a fair chunk of designing). I think most people liked it.

Lots of fun, didn't have too many expectations coming in, but somehow qualified first! Felt awful after the qualifier and only had about 35-40 minutes until the semis (no quarters - only 13 people).

In the semi I had a good plan - save energy. I knew the top 3 advanced, and executed to perfection. Came third.

In the final, I had a decent start, but got out maneuvered coming into the first big hill, and had to go around on the outside. Passed three people on the downhill/coming over the top, and promptly blew it on the final downhill corner leading into the final uphill. Came too far outside, didn't free skate, and got passed by all three up the hill. Finished fourth, but first in YOB.

(rest day)

First day of classes and felling tired, so decided to rest up for the bc cup. Not used to the high volume weeks that I put in over Christmas, but they were awesome!

Running 15:00 [1]

Monday Jan 2, 2017 #

Skiing - Skate 1:55:00 [1] 23.1 km (4:59 / km)

Easy skate ski up the road to the north hub, Larch lake loop, whoopee loops, panorama, baby moonwalk, reino's run, out the long south loop and back on sunshine. Did the 1km sprint loop to finish up, but it wasn't groomed so didn't do it again.

Streching/Rolling 25:00 [0]

Sunday Jan 1, 2017 #

Skiing - Classic 38:00 [3] 10.6 km (3:35 / km)

Fun race up at Larch Hills. I knew there were a few patches of dirt and rocks, so elected to use my warm-up skis. Bad mistakes, lost soooo much time on the downhills, but fairly happy with the race otherwise.

Skiing - Classic warm up/down 35:00 [1] 4.5 km (7:47 / km)

Drafting (DND Land) 1:15:00 [0]

Brought in template, drew roads, boundaries, contours. Basically done until fieldwork time in the spring.

Should be a nice map, no parking though.
