Note

WhyJustRun Club Sites just got an upgrade this evening: https://sage.whyjustrun.ca/maps/
- Better map pin implementation now showing map standard (by colour)
- No More overlapping pins - moved to a graduated symbol systems when zoomed out
- Also an option for a new layout for upcoming events - now ordered by the series they are defined in. This was implemented for Sage so that we can show two upcoming events in each of our regions, as well as one previous event. https://sage.whyjustrun.ca/

Big thanks to Russell Porter for keeping WhyJustRun up and running, and xc-racer2 for the updates!

Core Strength 20:00 [1]

Stationary Biking 30:00 [1]

Had hoped to get out for a run, but too much to do at the moment with school. Down to 95% of a lab and a final paper and 5 exams to do.

Armchair-O 45:00 [0]

Planning Vernon (Becker Park) Training, going through some maps with Lillian and Simon (my younger siblings), and planning tomorrow's Burnt Ida Bench excursion.
12 PM

Running 8:57 intensity: (4:40 @1) + (3:22 @2) + (55 @3) 1.24 km (7:14 / km) +27m 6:32 / km
ahr:131 max:158

Stopped in Vernon with Alexander on the way back to Salmon Arm for the weekend for quick little orienteering session on a map I've only been on once, so don't know it inside out yet.

Warm-up.

Orienteering 19:29 intensity: (16 @1) + (1:08 @2) + (6:35 @3) + (11:30 @4) 3.81 km (5:07 / km) +52m 4:48 / km
ahr:168 max:182

Running around the Becker Park area in Vernon with Alexander on the old Meghan Rance 2008 (never used?) map. It's still in decent shape, a few new buildings, vegetation is different, trails are different, new fences, etc. but overall very usable. Probably going to remap from scratch though - I find it really hard editing other peoples maps - especially when they mapped in OCAD and layer endless numbers of symbols on top of each other...

This is a really, really good area - and will probably be the highlight of OART day 1.

Running 3:33 intensity: (1:59 @1) + (1:34 @2) 0.56 km (6:20 / km)
ahr:133 max:141

Run back to the car/cool-down.

Running 7:36 intensity: (51 @0) + (3:58 @1) + (1:30 @2) + (1:17 @3) 0.55 km (13:43 / km) +25m 11:13 / km
ahr:128 max:158

Quick little back up to the top of the ridge to get some promotional pictures of the terrain for the OART website. Decided to go for the "view" picture over the "technical terrain" picture below the ridge. A really nice mix of terrain types on this map - park like, open grass ridge, forest with trails, oddly shaped condos, and a good mix of flat and contours.

5 PM

Running 45:03 intensity: (30:14 @1) + (14:49 @2) 7.67 km (5:52 / km) +196m 5:12 / km
ahr:150 max:167

Evening sanity run before dinner.

Foot hurting a little bit in the middle of the run today.

I finally figured out what triggers the right foot being sore while running. It hurts every time I run a side-hill where the trail is sloped from my right down to my left. For some reason this seems to bring it on. On flat stuff and sidehills the other way, it isn't an issue at all it seems. So I need to start planning my running routes a little differently to minimize that while still getting some trail running in.

Note

Knocking off all the non-schoolwork related to do list items right now, next up - Noah Hoffman fantasy contest!

Just got the latest Salmon Arm school map with fieldwork completed (thanks Phil!) uploaded: https://sage.whyjustrun.ca/maps/view/498
4 PM

Running 1:15:48 intensity: (38:50 @1) + (35:37 @2) + (1:21 @3) 10.95 km (6:55 / km) +275m 6:09 / km
ahr:143 max:173

Ran up Glenmore and met up with Alexander and Mhari at the junction with John Hindle (they ran from the University), and got into Coyote Ridge for the first time this year. These were my reserve trails - trying to save them to have something I haven't run on very much for later in the year when I'm even less motivated to go running.

Nice run, had to push the pace off the start because I was late for the meet-up time, but after that went pretty each, including walking some steeper hills. Accidentally took a wrong turn in the dark (hey, I've only been in that area once) on the way back down, so had to bushwhack for around 150m and jump a fence.

Headlight battery died on the way back - haven't charged it in a while, was kind of testing its limit on purpose.

These 4 hour chem labs really take a toll on me.

Note

Got some procrastination done by updating the sidebar of the Sage Website with (more) up to date info, and some updated pictures since our last flickr embed from before I took over the website died. https://sage.whyjustrun.ca/

Now if only I could nag somebody about the upcoming events formatting stuff without mentioning any names...
3 PM

Running 1:06:22 intensity: (1:44 @0) + (40:38 @1) + (24:00 @2) 9.16 km (7:15 / km) +319m 6:10 / km
ahr:149 max:175

Went out for a late afternoon easy run, foot was a pain again. Got through around 10 minutes, but it was a bit of a pain. Kept running through it for a while, but got too a really nice view, and my foot was hurting, so I just stopped for a while and watched the post-sunset light.

Future time-lapse location?

After the nice little break, ran back home and my foot didn't really bother me at all.

Also - playing around with the settings on my phone camera, finally figured out how to get a decent(ish) low light photo with my phone.

Note

Got some graphic design playing done instead of doing homework this evening, so I'm going to have a lot of lab write-up stuff to do tomorrow.

Anyways, here is a middling draft of the new Salmon Arm map layout. I'm open to thoughts, suggestions, comments, criticisms, querries, or quips.

I'm not quite sure what I think of it yet, we'll see if it sticks.

Running 39:25 intensity: (1:08 @0) + (9:22 @1) + (18:59 @2) + (9:36 @3) + (20 @4) 6.48 km (6:05 / km) +37m 5:55 / km
ahr:140 max:171 (injured)

Was planning a decent length tempo run, but had to cut it short after my right foot started hurting, and radiating up the leg as well. Not happy with this - seems like every time I run on harder surfaces (packed gravel trails, pavement) I'm having issues with this foot.

Stretched (and some rolling) everything out while making dinner, and feels fine now, just was progressively getting worse throughout the run so figured I had better stop.

Going to order some new road training shoes this weekend I think (basically all my time until then is studying for my last couple of midterms), and an ice pack too - I do not have one in Kelowna at the moment.

I'll continue to play this by how it feels I think. I don't have any pain with biking, orienteering on Sunday was fine, run Monday on soft Salmon Arm trails was just dandy, but this was an issue. Note that I used my X-talons on the Salmon Arm runs and orienteering, and a pair of road runners for the latest couple of runs in Kelowna.

In other news, Daniel Hubmann liked my Instagram photo of Dad and Lillian (see below)! I've made the big leagues now!

Note

Got almost no schoolwork done this weekend, but got 2 sprint maps done nearly start to finish, an HPP application, a decent amount of training, chopped a lot of firewood, improved the Burnt Ida Bench significantly, and dealt with some other life stuff out of my control. Overall a productive weekend, but need to put the pedal to the metal a bit over the next week to get through the last couple midterms and a whole bunch of assignments.

Week Training & School Plan:
T: Strength ~30min (bunch of school assignments, hopefully some Midterm studying)
W: Tempo Run ~25min (midterm studying)
T: Unwilling rest day, maybe some strength if I can squeeze it in (midterm #1, midterm studying, 3 hour lab)
F: Run - 1 hour (Midterm #2, O Chem Lab write-up)
S: Long ~2.5 hour run (O Chem Lab write-up)
S: Light 0.75 hour Run (O Chem Pre-Lab, O Chem Assignment #3)
M: Rest Day (a 4 hour organic chem lab counts as rest, right?)
8 AM

Running 1:28:16 intensity: (45:28 @1) + (42:03 @2) + (45 @3) 10.16 km (8:41 / km) +285m 7:37 / km
ahr:138 max:188

Easy run with Lillian and Dad on Black Road trails.

Note

Having some issues with creating a proper graphics design scheme for Salmon Arm maps. I really liked the mountains outlines used for the BCOC maps in Revelstoke (Example), which was admittedly inspired by the Ottawa graphic design scheme (here), and I want to continue something similar in Salmon Arm, but we don't really have any icons...

We have:
- The Wharf (can't really figure out how to use this in a border fashion)
- Salmon (frankly, pretty ugly fish, hard to make something simple enough not to be distracting from the map and sophisticated enough to get the point across)
- Arms (I think a bunch of outlines of people flexing arm muscles along all four edges of the page is a good solution...)
- Shuswap Lake (super awkward geographic shape to use in graphic design)
- Some brilliant suggestion/solution?

Other than this, the South Canoe School/Klahani Park map is done.
---

I think for Kelowna/Vernon I can set up a vineyard scheme, that should be something fun to do when I get around to doing OART maps again.
12 PM

Orienteering 2:05:36 intensity: (21:45 @0) + (53:51 @1) + (24:45 @2) + (20:19 @3) + (4:56 @4) 8.72 km (14:24 / km) +183m 13:02 / km
ahr:128 max:178

Easy orienteering training on the Burnt Ida Bench with Lillian (xc-racer4), Dad, and Phil. Mays and Corbetts were unresponsive to the (admittedly somewhat belated) invite.

Looking south up the Salmon River valley.

Lillian and Dad starting the upper loop. On a side note, this just became my most liked photo on Instagram.

Running warm up/down 8:00 [1] 1.0 km (8:00 / km)

Garmin was having a bit of a hissy fit (post-time change error I guess, I think that's the usual thing), so Garmin started the workout late.

Strength 20:00 [1]

Cut short - off to Phil's for a consultation on a couple of planned Salmon Arm area maps.

I've got to map Klahani Park/South Canoe Elementary in the next couple of days.

Black Road map we are going to get (ask nicely) the City to give us LiDAR (instead of paying outrageous prices for it), because we've given a lot of free maps to a bunch of schools and we know the new mayor. Phil will be doing most of this mapping, so I'll finally have a map close to my house that I didn't make. Will make a nice change.

Note

Back home for the long weekend, on the to do list this weekend is another Toronto map, an HPP application, a bunch of homework, and a bunch of training. Looks like I will not be getting out skiing, but hoping to get out on a map at least once this weekend.
10 AM

Strength (Wood) 1:00:00 [1]

Chopping wood round 1.

Followed by a trip up to Larch Hills (driving Jonathan up) for some work on the webcam/weather station/WiFi stuff.
3 PM

Strength (Wood) 1:15:00 [1]

Wood chopping (and some moving) round 2. A bunch of really nasty pine in this bunch.

ahr:144 max:171

Easy late afternoon run after a nap. It gets dark really early now.

Right foot was bugging me a bit throughout the run, kind of the usual thing, but a little different. Will keep an eye on it, and stretch it (and the rest of my legs) out this evening.

Biking (Commute) 25:00 [1]

Actual time around 50 minutes, but counting at 50%. Bunch of grocery store and university (huge headwind, biggest it's ever been) commuting - some of it in the rain with a change of clothes...

Note

Long story, barely related to orienteering, but interesting nonetheless.

So today I had to draw up a big organic chemistry reaction mechanism for a presentation on Tuesday. All the free chemistry reaction drawing software is awful, most commercial software costs in the thousands of dollars for a non-institutional access code, and unfortunately UBC doesn't just give access codes to undergrads who aren't doing research or something important.

So I talk to Alexander (who I'm presenting with anyways), and he has commercial grade software because he is doing research stuff and so the university gave him an access code. Anyways, we try drawing out this mechanism in the official software, and we get a little ways in and it is really time consuming and the product isn't that great.

So we try just drawing the thing by hand, and I'm sure you know how that goes. I get about 5 minutes into that drawing when I hit on a brilliant idea: I have this free vector drawing software that I know how to use - Open Orienteering Mapper!

I quickly define a new symbol set with a good mix of point, line, area, and text symbols, and start drawing. No time flat later, I've got a very professional looking mechanism ready to go. Bingo! I'm continually amazed at just how well OOM does things it's not designed for.

The reaction mechanism of discussion. Brownie points to anyone who can figure out the name reaction that it is!

Running 2:32:52 intensity: (16 @0) + (1:31:37 @1) + (52:24 @2) + (8:35 @3) 20.03 km (7:38 / km) +728m 6:28 / km
ahr:149 max:176

Wait, what's this? Actual training on my log?

Long run with Alexander at Myra-Bellevue provincial park. Started at the bottom, got up to the rail trail, then back down. Somewhere around 700m climb, so not too shabby.

Legs were starting to cramp up towards the end, should have eaten another fruit-leather earlier in the run.

Trying to get back into doing some proper/regular training again.

On a side note, I've decided to stop logging the biking to school. Decided it wasn't really worth logging (wasn't getting changed for it - therefore can't count it...).
