Running 20:00 [1]

Putting out a radio control and some drink cups.

Can only run to the same place so many times and call it orienteering - didn't even bother with a map.

Note

I'm switching primary internet browsers on my laptop from Firefox to Brave (I also have Edge, IE, and chrome installed, but never really used).

In other news, I also switched by taskbar to the left hand edge of the screen. Took a couple of days to get used to it, but I enjoy the extra .8 of an inch or so of vertical screen space.

Running 52:00 [2] 10.5 km (4:57 / km)

Drove down to Mission Creek main parking lot to go for a run on the Greenway (figured I might as well use the car while I have it). Ran up the creek first and quickly got onto a chunk of the greenway I had yet to visit. It gets narrower the further up you get - fewer and fewer people and progressively more bear poop. Another 7km or so off the top that I haven't gotten to yet - should be a fun run sometime.

A few issues with my right foot again today. I ran in inov-8 x-talon 212s - this wasn't the right call - the trail was very hard packed and wide - should have gone for more of a road running shoe. Had to stop and stretch it out a couple of times.

Distance is a bit rough - its measured off of google earth approximately.

Note

BCOC Organization stuff with school (2 quizzes this week, 4 labs, lots of assignments) means training is on the back burner again for a bit. In a weird sort of way, looking forward to BCOC being done so I have more time to train.

Haven't had a chance to look at weekly map, probably won't be able to dedicate any time to it this week.

Note

And the award for last person to register for BCOC 2018 Revelstoke goes to.... Nathan Detroit Barrett of the Greater Vancouver Orienteering Club registering an impressive 9 minutes prior to the deadline, easily beating his closest competitor or Bart Jarmula by 28 minutes.
8 PM

Running 31:16 intensity: (24 @0) + (9:01 @1) + (13:47 @2) + (8:04 @3) 5.81 km (5:23 / km) +94m 4:59 / km
ahr:141 max:164

Only managed to get out for a quick late evening run. Busy day, and didn't get enough done, so lots to do tomorrow. Right calf/foot being a pain again, but ran through it. Only hit a 2 or so.

GOT DONE TODAY:
- O300 Course Planner Exam
- Changing bedrooms (5 kids in the family, everyone just switched bedrooms cause I have mostly moved out ish, so had to move a fair bit of stuff, throw out a bunch of stuff, etc.)
- Double checking BCOC Long course on paper - everything looks ready to print
- Printing, Cutting, Trimming, control descriptions for BCOC Middle and Long.
- Various emails with start requests, etc. Need to add a Zone4 field next time for dietary restrictions for Banquet, and for special start time requests.

TO DO TOMORROW:
- DONE! Finish Chem 220 Orbitals/Perioidic Trends Assignment (15 minutes ish)
- Almost Done - Finish Chem 330 Advanced O-Chem Pre-Lab #2 (30 minutes ish)
- DONE! Most of Chem 330 Post-Lab #1 (2 hours, hopefully?)
- Create Start Lists for all BCOC courses - publish online, send to the o-store so they can create bibs on Monday. (several hours, probably 2-3, but no real idea. Haven't done this properly before).
- Sprint Control Descriptions (30 minutes)
- Set up MeOS files (sort of part of start lists)
- Drive Back to Kelowna (1.5 hours)
- Hopefully a decent length run that's longer than 1 hour, but that's rather doubtful.

And then there's a bunch of school stuff due later in the week (not Monday), most of which I haven't touched yet.

ahr:152 max:179

Running at Predator Ridge - first time up here. Stopped in on the way home for the weekend of BCOC prep and homework. Nice run - nice mix of hiking and Mountain Biking trails - a couple of good views, but low clouds and some fog limited that a bit. Had a bit of some chest cramps part of the time - didn't hydrate well today since I forgot my water bottle in the geography lab on Thursday and was unable to recover it yet.

Note

I've got a good guess at the weekly map #99.

Spoilers below...

Only got it because of the dot colours ... if it was any two other colours I wouldn't have gotten it.

Note

Going to be sporcling every night for the next while:

https://www.sporcle.com/games/njz5/aminoacid3
and I also need to learn the one letter codes too.

And this is only one little class of five.

Ending up talking to people on campus for a long time before I came home today - learned a lot about soil agglomerations though. Going to have to do a lot of homework this week that should have been done on the weekend.

Quick little run on the treadmill.

Note

Up to 97 people registered for BCOCs, although a couple of them (myself and Brian and maybe some others) probably aren't racing. Generally my rule of thumb for organizing events is if I put out less controls than people who are coming, the event is worthwhile (with the exception of OART...).

We've got around 35-45 controls/race for the weekend, so hoping to bump registration up at least over the 100 mark and ideally up to around 120. Just under one week left to sign up.
10 AM

Running 1:30:08 intensity: (1:17 @0) + (24:56 @1) + (26:18 @2) + (37:33 @3) + (4 @4) 11.94 km (7:33 / km) +697m 5:51 / km
ahr:144 max:170

Trying to explore Rose Valley, but ended up on the wrong road (didn't look up instructions how to get there, just knew roughly where it was...) and ended up at some primarily atv and motorbiking trailhead. Nice trail going up the ridge so I figured why not. A little bit more climb than I was expecting, but nice views around 2/3 of the way up. After that the ridge broadened out more and in was in the trees the rest of the way. Mix of single and double track. Nice primarily pine forest, but way too steep for anything orienteering wise.

View from 2/3 of the way up as posted on Instagram. can't seem to figure out how to get Instagram photos direct embedded here for some reason.

Note

Its insane to think that someone who wants a 1:24 topo/trail map of a forest needs to process lidar, or have someone custom process lidar for them.

Bravo!
10 AM

Running 52:53 [1] 6.61 km (8:00 / km) +105m 7:25 / km

More exploring, figure I might as well while I have the car, relatively low amounts of homework, and it isn't snowing yet.

Looks like there will be some pretty good terrain up here, hoping the LiDAR that was supposed to get done this summer includes this area. When it becomes available I'll process out Karttapalautin maps to figure out what to investigate further.

Definitely awesome Ski-O potential though - really nice dense trail system, and with enough flattish clearcuts to add more narrow snowmobile cut throughs. Never going to happen though - ski-o just isn't really a thing out here.

Running 31:13 [1] 3.9 km (8:00 / km) +159m 6:38 / km

Part 2 of exploration around McCullock Lakes - after a quick bite of lunch of course.

ahr:138 max:172

Exploring around Mission, took a while to find the trailhead, but nice run once I got there.

Near the top of where I got to in the upper part of the Kelowna Mountain fire area from last decade. Amazing how little forest regrowth there has been.

Note

Finally got around to throwing my GPS track onto the map from this past Sunday (while procrastinating doing biochem and O-Chem between classes).

The terrain was really, really good. Way more rock features than Kartapallautin picked up and more than I drew manually. A few more dirt biking trails that I drew, but they tend to meander a lot which makes it even better. Terrain is absolutely epic, only problem is access - need to talk to some private landowners (dashed Purple Line roughly shows private land boundaries - which is to the west).

Got out running today. A few problems with the feet/calves for the first 25 minutes or so, then settled down once I'd stretched them out a bit. Need to find time to make sure I get more consistent running and stretching in.

(rest day)

Headwind most of the way back, so didn't a little slower than usual as well. Also, a little tired after a four hour chemistry lab (well... I got out in around 3 hours, which was a nice bonus).

Looks like every Monday when I have Chem lab is going to be my rest day, just not enough time to get any real training in and get enough sleep and food for an 8am class start tomorrow.

Note

Whole bunch of people registering before the BCOC regular deadline tonight - I had been getting a little worried.

I just need one piece of info confirmed, and bulletin will be posted - should be by Tuesday at the latest.

Also getting back into the habit of weeklymap.org - nailed last week's map on day 1 without any hints - took some problem solving by the whole family though.
2 PM

Running 7:18 [1] 0.97 km (7:30 / km) +11m 7:05 / km
ahr:117 max:137

Running to the start triangle on the map.

ahr:148 max:178

Checking out some totally awesome championships level terrain just outside Salmon Arm - only problem is the access. Need to talk to some private landowners, because this run just confirmed that this run is absolutely amazing.

Map to come if I have time.

Working on fixing the bulletin a bunch, bunch of website stuff, LOTR risk in the evening (got creamed).

BCOC 2018 Bulletin #1 about to drop this weekend - all the formatting is done - just a final check from the event director and a few other key people and it'll be published. Took quite a while to put together - so you all should have a good read through it - lots of good information.

Up to 52 for BCOC Registration. This is a tiny little reminder that regular registration fees end this weekend, with late fees open for the following two weeks. 3 races, 2 brand new maps (one of them is admittedly so big that there is no overlap between the middle and long - none of the same area will even be printed), and 1 banquet.

http://bcoc2018.ca/

Need to start doing some actual promotion/emails tomorrow - but finished the initial draft of a map for Toronto this evening. Gonna cram a lot in this weekend too, school starts for real next week it looks like.

Gotta say, reading through the comments and logs of the American juniors absolutely made my day today.
7 AM

Biking (commute) 15:19 [1] 5.17 km (2:58 / km) +43m 2:51 / km

First of many commutes to school. Shorter then I thought it would be.
2 PM

Biking (commute) 15:47 [1] 5.5 km (2:52 / km)

And back home.

Tuesday Sep 4, 2018 #

Note

Moving to Kelowna day. About a 50 minute run from where I was last year so new trails to explore, new areas to map.

Sunday Sep 2, 2018 #

Note

How much do people like having controls marked on their map and in the terrain in model events? Would anyone strong feelings if we opted not to hang flags or mark controls on the map for the BCOC 2018 Model?

It's a fairly small area anyways unfortunately - could have used another day of mapping to expand it, but just ran out of time. It's still 0.12km2, but that is smaller than it could have been. Definitely does still give you a good sense of the terrain though.

Note

My GPS permissions settings are getting changed with attackpoint. I'll becommuting by bike to university this year, and living with a new landlord, and don't want my living location to be visible to random people. As such, only a specified list of people will be able to access that info. If you want exclusive access to my GPS data, send me an email or comment on my log and I'll add you.

Saturday Sep 1, 2018 #

Note

I might get around at some point to adding some depth to the training log over the past month and adjusting zones properly, but right now is really busy with a whole bunch of mapping for Toronto, moving, course setting/clubby stuff for Sage, and school starting up.

Might be good if I start training sometime soon too.
10 AM

Mapping 7:21:23 intensity: (5:21:23 @0) + (2:00:00 @1) 11.76 km (37:32 / km) +387m 32:14 / km

Last day of flagging/mapping in Revelstoke for BCOCs. Things are looking good I think.
