Kooyoora Ultra Long M21E, 20k. Was feeling a bit intimidated last night about this after feeling the physical effort required for the middle distance. Gave myself a fairly good pep talk pre start though and got into the right frame of mind. Started well - into the map and conserving energy while keeping up with some others. Also finding them pretty well. Missed a bit in first butterfly when sat on RobW but not too much. Also chose the wide left track run on the longish leg back which in hindsight probably wasn't as fast as the little track straight. Still didn't lose any on Duncan Morrison who went straight. Mucked up route choice on 2nd last of first loop climbing up to what looked like a long ledge on the map but really was a big bloody cliff. JoshyB followed but abandoned the cliff sensibly!
2nd loop was longer but was in a bit of a group with Duncan, Josh and occasionally seeing Blair and another victorian I didn't know who turned out to be Rob Baker. The other guys seemed to run straighter than me between the controls but I was finding them and exiting well. Got a bit confused in the butterfly from 21 to 26 - I was navigating in to 26 but things didn't seemed right. I panicked a bit, stopped and looked back on the map could remember 24 and 23 but hadn't been to 25. Bugger. It wasn't too bad though as was short leg along some greys from 26 back to 25 and then 26 again before leaving the butterflies. Settled back in ok after that but lost Blair and Josh when had a gel at drinks control. Duncan also stopped for a gel so there was some banter on the rest of the loop before Duncan mustve made a mistake (or a split?) as he wasn't there at end of the loop.
Some encouragement from Grant M and others as set out on the 3rd loop. Started it with Rob Baker so thought wise to have a buddy where appropriate in the long last loop. Lost a probably 2-3 mins on 34 when just couldn't make sense of it before Rob found it. Relieved to get drinks and gel at 35. Rob dropped me on a track and I was tiring so tried to focus on finding them well and not losing time as obviously I was with fatigue. Next leg was, IMHO, the hardest on the course and even though it was long I walked a fair bit of it through fatigue and not wanting to get lost. Got it well.
In to the final butterfly and made a complete meal of the pivot control. Just didn't make sense and eventually Duncan came in and got it so I got it. Probably lost 3mins. Somewhat not hilariously I got round the butterfly ok but then dumped another 2-3 mins trying to find it again!!!! The only bonus was saw Rob Baker looking for it too for the first time so I'd got ahead of him without realising.
Homeward bound from here and Duncan had too much petrol in the tank for me. I'd chosen my route on the long leg and picked Duncan back up again at the end of it (he made a mistake) but not enough to get ahead of him. there certainly wasn't any sprinting going on either! Really pleased with run and loved it. Well done Jimbo and Neil Barr. Absolutely stuffed at the end and 3hrs 20 was miles better than the 4hrs I thought realistic for me.
Unfortunately a heart flutter for me afterwards when MaryMac told me I was up as MP. I went over in somewhat of a flap and checked with Jimbo. 24 was missing from my download but I could remember it very clearly given my error with 24 to 26 so Jimbo said he'd reinstate me for now and look at it later (he was trying to do presos at the time). I was relieved and very sure I'd been there so just figured something had gone wrong and he'd work it out. Phew.

Vic Middle CHamps @ Kooyoora. M21E. Was pumped for big trip to Kooyoora with RobW. STarted pretty well focussing on exits and entries to controls. Trying to keep good contact with map and was punished a little bit every time I lost a little bit of contact with the map. Still a terrific area. Was running well but again lost a bit of contact (not sure the number) and went over a small spur down the line of rock I thought the control was on. All fitted untill no flag. Bugger! Took a while to work it out - I was 1 or 2 tiny spurs over from spur control was on. Truth be told I really only worked out properly which one I was on when I got back! Lost 3-4mins. Got back into OK enjoying again and hit the rest on the way home although starting to run out of petrol tickets. Great course where had to be switched on whole time.
