Two Bays Trail Run from Dromana to Cape Schank, 28k. HR monitor reading high whole run. time to replace.

Spent most of time in lead up worried about calf/back but had tried to also eat well and have plan. Warm up seemed ok - could feel injury but not painful. Started in allocated Wave 2 after seeing every man, their dog and their friend who power walks start in Wave 1. Race starts with 300m along beach road and then 3k uphill up Arthurs Seat. Looked back after about a k and me and another guy were about 300m ahead of anyone else from Wave 2. Was weird leading!

Calf pretty much felt like exploding when started up hill but seemed to stay at a level of really nervy-bad corky. Kept telling myself physio had said no damage would be done - just nerves. Think I ran up Arthurs Seat trying to keep foot flat rather than stretch calf.

Running with other guy from Wave 2 we passed first of Wave 1 runners just short of the top of Arthurs Seat. It was pretty much a continuous stream of passing people (750 entrants) rest of the race which I didnt mind - gave me targets to chase and occupied the mind - but didnt help time or pacing as would get caught behind someone and/or surging past. Dropped other guy from Wave 2 down longish hill after Arthurs Seat.

Bit concerned excitement of passing people meant I was going too hard too early but thought that was a worry I had at Tour de Ridge and it turned out ok. Gels at about 50mins and again at 1hr40. Water intermittenly as had to run with bottle. Passed JennyC around 11k mark (?).

Starting to tire towards the end of long single track section between drinks at 14k and 23k but kept reasonable head of steam - again passing people two edged sword as was encouraging mentally but physically meant slowing down, losing rhythm and then little accelerations. Unexpectedly caught Blair, who didnt look flash, just before 23k drinks/road crossing.

Last section was tough. Was pushing well but it was rolling sandy, tree rooty coastal single track through tee tree. Got a fright when asked to pull over about 25k - Magnus Michellson and another guy from 56k runners who started 10mins after me rolled through! Impressive stuff. Their pace a little too quick for me to hang on.

Toughest part of race was about 75m of stairs at 25k mark - sent the legs into lactic! But after getting them going again at the top pushed on looking for Cape Schank Lighthouse. Caught some glimpses and into the car park for finish. Buggered!

I thought 2hrs 10 might be do-able with good run but passing so many people put paid to that. Think run was pretty good for me as I pushed the whole way and didnt really let the calf pain stop me. Greg finished in 2hrs36 - a mile under the 6Ft qualifier of 3hrs 50. Coffee, bacon & eggs in sorrento and an afternoon lying on grass behind the sorrento beach made for a ripper day. Run is a beauty with so much of it in forest on single track although if I do it again will make sure I'm in Wave 1!

Stretching & Exercises 30:00 [3]

Note
(injured)

Got worried enough and went to physio. She confirmed my suspicions - calf pain is neural from lower back tightness/flare up. She loosened it up (painful), narrowed down to preferred stretches and said no running till Friday. She said should be right for Sunday's two bays as even if not good it wont do any more damage running on it. Feels better already after pounding she gave it.

Note

Sooo I go down to Woden shopping Centre at lunch looking for some work shoes. couldnt find any I liked but thought might pop into Rebel see if there were any bargains. No short or shirt bargains so might as well have a look in the random jumble of shoe bargains they normally have (which normally arent very bargainy compared with Wiggle, eastbay etc). Have a scan and there they were. 1 pair of Lunar Flys. Just 1 mind. But you only need 1 when they are MY SIZE!!!!! Have I mentioned yet that Lunar Flys in Rebel are normally $159, I got my last pair from eastbay for $69 (plus $30 postage) but these were $59!!!!! Bought em, rang RobW who told me to go out and get a tattslotto ticket!!!! Woohoo!
