Cycling 40:00 [3]
shoes: Trek Domane 4.3

Really weird day. Woke up feeling abysmal - stomach like post race with that feeling of not wanting to eat but nauseous. Rode to physio and then work but by the time I got to work felt exhausted. Legs just totally exhausted and fatigued all day, even sitting. Had a few lie downs during the day and went to bed very early. Not sure what happened - post marathon fatigue combined with dehydration from last nights o? Dunno. Hope dont feel that way for long though.

2nd week of Basketball for Canberra Cannons in C grade although cleary we are D Grade material. Lost again although made a good start, leading at quarter time after making some good baskets early. I improved a little although it brought frustration. Understand the running patterns a little more, especially in defence, but attack is harder to understand. I got the ball a lot more in attack (probably coz I had longer shorts this week so team mates were prepared to pass it to me) but when I did get it often turned bad (missed shots, getting caught with the ball). Anyway still good fun and feeling a little less injured after the game this week.

Found a spot on ITB tonight that was agony but I suspect will improve things.

Slow run with ALJ round Black Mtn reserve. Sore, slow and seedy after a few beers night before. Got a lift home the night before in a police car - thanks Constable Frogga although disappointed you didn't cede to my demands to put the lights and sirens on. It was cool listening to police radio but.

Walk / hobble round O at Rememberence Park. Quite a neat little course but I felt a possible new injury near knee early on so hobble-walked round. Also just sore still. Think I forgot to download at the end which is probably a good thing for my performance but a bad thing if the organisers were worried about me.

basketball 40:00 [3]
shoes: Lunar Fly 2 Green/Black

I've joined Fatrats 'social' basketball team. I told him I was interested when he said they were looking for numbers but that my experience consisted of playing for 6 weeks at age 12 when I'd broken my wrist (and wasnt allowed to play footy) and one school holidays Dad taught me how to do lay ups.

Bennie said I was perfect for the team.

Not a good start when getting gear together realised I only had short running shorts i.e. no long basketball like shorts. Bennie sledged me about it in the car when he picked me up and certainly I wasnt with the in crowd down at the courts! there was a guy on the other team in Raiders shorts so some hope. Started on the bench but soon came on (plenty of blokes in our team needing rests) and managed to mostly get in the way. Bennie gave me a few tips on where to stand which were gratefully received and I tried to re-spark memories of what to do in team structures during my stints on the bench. Anyway focussed on rebounds given I was a bit taller and managed to snag a few. Also rebounded one and then popped it in the net which was a highlight although I suspect not as much a highlight as it was in my mind (ben confirmed this on drive home). We lost 34-24 and havent won for a while. Team seemed low afterwards but I was pumped just to have touched the ball. Also we came back a bit in last quarter.

Biggest concern was injuries of course and burning nerve pain in left calf on way home was not a good sign. But stretches when I got home and anti inflams and seem pretty ok the next day. Game didnt start till 10.10pm, finshed at 11pm and my body wasnt nodding off till 1am. Not good on school night but I really enjoyed playing team sport again (played footy a lot as a kid and for a few years in my late 20s). Better get down to rebel for some long shorts before next week!

Easy run with Hoggster along coastline at Jervis Bay. Quite tricky running in soft sand with high tide. On way back Hoggster tripped and flared up his calf so walked back. Didnt bother me!

Run with the ladies down at Jervis Bay - Nat, Al, MissJones, Kristen and Em. Downhill to a beach (steamers beach I think) and more than steady uphill back to car. Beautiful beach with hardly a soul on it. Run back up stairs was tough but i found it easier than going downhill.

Running warm up/down 5:00 [0] 1.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: LunarRacer3

Got to G very early and went to the loo 3 times tryign to decrease chances of repeating having to stop for loo as did in the half.

Running race 3:05:24 intensity: (6 @1) + (8 @2) + (5:46 @3) + (2:04:35 @4) + (54:49 @5) 42.53 km (4:22 / km) +177m 4:16 / km

Melbourne Marathon. Didnt get a very good starting position, jumping the fence from the side but doing so too far back. Probably took 20s to get under the start line and then it was bedlam for the first few k along Batman Ave, Flinders St and StKilda Rd. The starter, after a beautiful rendition of Advance Australia Fair, said there were 7000 in the marathon, the most for a marathon in the southern hemisphere. cant imagine what New York or London would be like!

Found a pace along stkilda rd which seemed like I was holding back. It was a little quicker than the planned 4.10s but it was an ever so slight down hill. Confusingly the 3hr pacer was quite a bit ahead of me even though 3hr pace is 4.16s.

The loop in Albert Park came along quickly and started to fall in with Deon the dutch dude and a melbourne midday miler (mmm). We all had the same plan trying to hold back although Deon seemed to take off whenever his k split read a second above 4.10. Kez Rattray came up from behind and gave me a pinch on the butt, introduced me to Dutch Deon who he knew and then kept going. Came out of Albert Park under 10k banner and had a gel.

Down Fitzroy Street which looked way different to when I was a lad and onto Beacondfield Pde still with Dutchy and mmm where we had a proper chat. This section was out, back, out (the other way) and back to Fitzroy Street and went from about 12k through to about 30k. Glad it wasnt windy. After 15k or so the 3 of us were swamped a bit by a larger group of blokes and fell into stride with them. Cant say I "decided" too but it seemed reasonable to sit in a group. In hindsight it probably got a bit racy as we rolled along and towards 25k and the Stkilda turn around I dropped off the group a bit. Dutchy did too but he was starting to suffer. Had a gel at about 22k and water at 15k or so. No guts or toilet problems which was good.

Passed Kathryn Preston at 26k and said hello. She was limping it seemed but I think thats her running style and she did end up passing me back somewhere and beating me in by 4mins or so. 27 or 28k things were getting a little more difficult for me. Seemed to be taking a while and a lot of effort to get back to Fitzroy Street and by now I was counting ks and checking splits - I was 2mins or so ahead of 3hr pace.

Into and along Fitzroy Street which I guess is a 2k section. The 3hr bus (pacer) came past me along here which was a little deflating. I didnt lift to keep up mostly because with still 12k to go I didnt think extra effort was wise and I didnt feel I would stay with them for long.

Then we hit StKilda Rd and all of a sudden there were people everywhere - the half marathon had merged in with us. I would guess the people I merged in with were running 100mins (?) but it was like it was the start again with walls of people. I zigged and zagged but lost focus, certainly lost sight of the bus and slowed a fair bit, falling into my own world of hurt.

Pretty slow along here but made it to Arts Centre at the start of StKilda Rd and ran down through tunnel to a loop of the Domain which included the main hill of the course at 35k (ouch). Had seen Mum and Dad twice which had given me a little boost and was urging myself along trying to keep with others. Had been sipping my last gel too which was helping and the half marathon course finally split another way which also made things clearer.

Back along StKilda Rd (38k or so) towards the city for the final time and I wasnt going much faster but was slugging it out well. ANother cheer from Dad at the 40k mark on Princes Bridge really helped and I was focussed on getting to the finish and starting to move better. A little down hill along Flinders St and I was now pushing along. I'd finished the gel I'd been sipping by then and water was really helping me to feel better. Did the 42nd k in 4min 30s and was focussed on initially beating 3.10 but that then became 3.05 or possibly my pb of 3.03.50.

Really cool to enter the MCG through a tunnnel just like they do in the big championships and then really push it for 300m or so in the G. Saw 3.05 pass on my watch but really pleased to be finishing strongly.

Overall I was happy with race - great to finish strongly and especially to recover from a long low patch. Also I really enjoyed it - the effort, the camrarderie and the challenge of trying to get all the things right (pacing, nutrition, mental toughness). But sub 3hrs didnt seem likely from about 30k onwards.

Saw the Prestons in the finish area and was on same flight home as Craney. All ran well and Kez Rattray too. Race was good although didnt like the bits with the half marathoners - I dont know how many were in the half marathon but it was sold out. Also other sections had 10k race running the course but at least they were in different lanes.

Lift home with Mum and Dad which was great as after perfect marathon weather it started to pelt down rain. Guts survived race but not too well in the few hours afterwards with waves of nausea which only a half hour lie down put a stop too. Body sore and tired but nothing that wont recover quickly/normally. Back to beer, chips and couch!

Stretch the legs after plane flight. ran over from mum and dads to petrie park where Yallambie Primary School inter-regional footy grand final with one J.McCrae on the half forward flank. Coaching got us over the line as it was a very small ground so Coach Kent Silfo moved our Capt and gun Centre Half Forward Brent to Centre Half Back as the ground was so small and he was such a big kick he could kick goals from there.

Absolute barry crocker. worst run in ages. Hoggster ran well for first leg so I went out needing to hold my own. Lost a min or so finding the first then another min at the 3rd. Was scrappy to 4th when NSW runner came along so decided to stick with him and just get some rhythm. Problem was he (Steve Todkill) had a fairly different split and by the time I realised I'd blown a lot of time. After that repeated the same mistake over - run hard during the leg thinking had to make a menz and then lose masses of time at the end of the leg. Demoralised by the end although bizarrely hit the last 5 or 6 pretty well - seemed to correspond with when running got easier. That run best forgotten although at least my teammates Hoggster and Devil ran well. #theweakestlink

M40 at Oz Middle Champs at the Gib. Ran ok if lacking a bit of focus as thinking about commentary work. Took some conservative route choices which, looking at splits, didnt pay off. Still maanged to hit them all with just little time losses here and there till about 3 from the end when ran to wrong spur and corresponding rock pile. Lost 2-3mins. Similar error to last week getting angles wrong. 4th place although in official time of 40:40 which GrantM pointed out was approrpriate for age class.
