Orienteering race 53:29 [5] 7.3 km (7:20 / km) +200m 6:27 / km

A disappointing finish to the week with a very tired run in first leg of the Aus relay champs. Lost the lead bunch up the first hill but could see them up the hill on the way to #4. A 20s mistake at #6 followed by 2min at #8 left me running alone until I caught up to Greg Barbour around #11. We were together for the rest of the course, even having a tussle over the last control punch. Another 30s error on #16 didn't help matters.

I could run okay on the flat but was useless on the hills. The big mistake was due to fatigue and a lack of focus with the head-to-head racing - I didn't read the map properly and didn't keep contact - a classic rushing things type of mistake.

Simeon and Lance both had okay runs but we were well down overall. Very good pace from the top guys after yesterday's long that's for sure, and something for me to work on. I don't think I'd even recovered from the first weekend's races by the long ...

Aus Long Distance champs. 8th overall and 5th Aussie but well down from a time perspective. Didn't take the necessary time on the tricky route choices and lost time on the first two long legs. My legs were smashed after #17, which contributed to a couple of minutes lost in the detail at #19. About 6.30 lost in mistakes all up.

Jog around Muresk Institute with Elliot. Ran up to the Pig Skills Centre where there was not much to see but lots of grunting. Did a few run-throughs at the end. I still don't feel recovered.

Public race after the Aus Schools Individual champs. The conditions were a bit tough, 30℃ on an open map, lots of seedy grass and rocky ground, and I was still feeling tired so planned not to run very hard. Even so I struggled and felt a bit sick when I pushed a bit so it ended up being a bit of a plod. Navigationally alright, not especially good but no mistakes. Good job by the juniors pushing themselves in these conditions.

Aus Sprint Champs at Curtin University. A nice urban sprint map and I had a good race. I was super nervous beforehand but I was determined not to repeat some past race failures and managed to stay on top of it. After a slow first control I pushed myself hard physically and mentally. I got a couple of route choices wrong (#7 and #8) and lost 10s I can't explain on #13 but maybe I took my foot off the gas a bit. Very happy with the result; 7th and 5th Aussie including Oscar in the juniors.
