Orienteering race 1:45:55 [4] 12.7 km (8:20 / km) +605m 6:44 / km
shoes: VJ Sticky

QLD Champs long on more farmland but hillier hillyer more hilly. I was pretty happy with my race with just two mistakes for about 2:30 total but a review of the splits suggests I made a route choice error of about 50s on #9 and a couple of wobbly controls (#10 and #11) turned out to be 30s and 45s. The result was that Mikko beat me by 12s and took out both the long champs and the overall title, since he got me yesterday by 20s.

Orienteering race 42:56 [4] *** 6.4 km (6:42 / km) +190m 5:50 / km
spiked:21/24c shoes: VJ Sticky

QLD Middle Champs at Taromeo near Blackbutt - interesting terrain, a mix of open farmland with granite rocks, semi-open farmland with low visibility and vague features, and some thicker grungy stuff. I didn't get the best start by blowing 45s on #2 but refocused and continued pretty cleanly until #8 though surprisingly slow on #4 through the thick stuff where I had a few hesitations. After this I proceeded to make what has become my archetypal error: navigating to the wrong control. Unfortunately on this occasion I ran to #12 instead of #9, proceeded to do the loop unaware, before realising my mistake on the way back to #12. I did the loop again but it cost about 3min. I lost some more time on #13 when I got stuck on the wrong side of the creek and got pushed well wide of the line but after that the terrain opened up and I was able to up my tempo and win 9 of the last 12 splits.

NightNav at Ashgrove. Had a fairly good plan but made some deviations on the fly which turned out to be mistakes and added a bit more distance than required.

A Mona's fartlek up at the reservoir in the morning, dodging In-Training people more than dogs; it's usually the other way around. Felt alright but I don't think I could have handled a tougher interval session. Left calf started to tighten.
