Orienteering race (NAOC Long) 1:54:54 [5] 12.3 km (9:20 / km) +185m 8:41 / km
shoes: Olway Somethings

I tried to enjoy this one after yesteday's disaster and knowing I had little chances in a long race. Navigated quite well though I didn't spend enough time evaluating route choices on the long legs and made maybe 5min worth of other errors. My feet started to hurt about 1/3 the way around and I was getting frustrated running through the rocky ground and the thick vegetation, so I lost any focus I had and plodded the rest of the way around. More strength and endurance required to run one of these well.

I think it's time to retire these Olway shoes, for races over 4-5km anyway.

Orienteering race (NAOC Middle) 53:28 [4] 4.5 km (11:53 / km) +65m 11:05 / km
shoes: Olway Somethings

This was my best opportunity to have a good race at the NAOCs. I started well, spiking 1 & 2, and only a few seconds off the pace on each leg. Lost 20s on 3 when I picked the wrong little knoll, then spiked 4, 5 and 6, again only just off the leading pace. 7 was my first bigger mistake running a little of line to the left and dropping 1.5min. 8 was okay but lost 20s on 9 when I ran offline again. I started losing focus on the way to 10, running carelessly and dropping 3.5min. Same thing on 11, spiked 12 and then total disaster dropping about 8min on 13. Took me a while to work out what happened, but it seems I ran out the control 45 degrees offline - it's a miracle I ever found the control. Spiked 14 and ran out too fast losing contact (infuriatingly I was probably within 30m of the control!) and another 6min. Very disappointing, a clean run would have put me at about 35min and inside the top ten.

Re-strapped my achilles tighter and didn't notice it at all during the race.

Orienteering 45:00 [3] 3.0 km (15:00 / km)
shoes: Olway Somethings

Jogged and walked around the training map checking out the terrain and mapping. Achilles hurt a couple of times after landing on rocks with my toe and my heel dropped.

Orienteering race (NAOC Sprint) 17:24 [5] 3.1 km (5:37 / km) +15m 5:29 / km
shoes: Asics Gel 2100

A good race. I picked the shortest route choices everywhere except 17 (not that there was much difference between routes) and my only mistake was misinterpreting a wall as impassable and losing some seconds while working out what to do and panicking that I would get disqualified.

So I'm just down on running speed from the winner (Patrick, 15:21) and I don't feel as fit as I did at the Alberta champs a month ago; for which my achilles is at fault.

Earnt my first ever world ranking points!
