Run with Wendy and Anna from Anna's place. Miserable rainy day. I did enjoy the cruisey pace and Anna's porridge and coffee were awesome as usual.

Run from work to Anzac Park with Anna and then home. Had planned to do ints but everyone bailed so I just ran home. Time's a guess.

Night run up Coot-tha and back. Felt a bit sick in the stomach on the way up but I think it was the jam drop and apple juice rather than the child's stomach bug. Got a stitch on the way down so, sadly, couldn't run fast. Also, I found the newly renovated top part of Honeyeater Tr disturbing. It felt like I was at risk of slipping off the edge all the time. I think they've made it slightly off-camber for water run-off so perhaps it was some combination of that and the little head-lamp.

Long run from Wendy's with a great breakfast afterwards. Legs felt tired and struggled to keep up with Rachel from the beginning. Macca and I left Rachel to run back the short way but then Macca's inflated dislike of running on runs kicked in and instead of the short route back from Slaughter Falls we headed back up Fat Controller/Toilet Block and then back via Simpsons Falls. This route ended up being longer with more climb than Rachel's. Shortcut fail.

A funny thing happened when I was within 400m of Wendy's. I passed a woman with a dog going the opposite direction. Well, I passed the woman but the dog took one look at me and bolted in the opposite direction and didn't stop! When I got down to the pond it was furiously running away on the other side. It's good to know I'm scary to dogs,

Run home from work. Can still feel the weekend's racing in my legs but was able to keep an easy, steady pace without any problems. Stopped to chat with Bomb just before Anzac Pk and legs stiffened up a bit. Which may be why, just a few minutes after starting again, I had this piercing pain on the inside of my right ankle. I was completely unable to use it for a couple of minutes. I'd just rung Megan to come and pick me up when it resolved and I finished the run home. Weird!

Orienteering race 2:03:00 [3] 15.1 km (8:09 / km) +475m 7:02 / km
shoes: VJ Sticky

Long distance NOL at Collins Creek. This was more lantana-infested than I recall! Had a reasonable start, fairly clean through the first part of my loop, dropping Bryan and Oscar when they made mistakes. Had a bunch of Lachlan, Shep and Olly catch me just after the common control and we were together to the end of the loop but I was having trouble keeping up. Had some trouble keeping up the intensity in the 2nd loop where I was running by myself, ended up just going steady and walked up a lot of hills. Basically just kept going that way until the end. It turned out to be a pretty good pace though as I was completely smashed at the end. Cleanish sort of run, mostly lost time getting pushed around by the lantana. Need more fitness!

Great run by Olly to place 2nd!

NOL Sprint at QUT; first part of a two part race. My best result in a sprint race and was surprised about it. Lost about 1 min all up but still managed 5th with Olle Poland in front of everyone. There was definitely a home ground advantage but it's hard to say how big. Certainly in the central area around controls like 8 and 9, and the pass-though on the way to 14, I could run through the buildings with confidence but in most other places on the map I don't think I had an edge. I'd say at most a 30s advantage over the whole course.

A chasing start sprint at UQ to complete the race that started this morning. I was pretty excited and nervous leading up to this because I was starting so close the front. In the end I had a decent race, mixing with Olly at the beginning and then Bruce in the 2nd half. A few mistakes in there, maybe 50s, but then I accidentally skipped 22, a leg that would have added 10s to my time ... I was extremely disappointed. This would have been my best NOL finish. A big let down after the morning's good finish.

Day 3 of Easter. Started okay, wobbles on 3 and 4, then big mistake on 5 and motivation was gone. Basically plodded around the rest, though I did try to hang with Lachlan, Matt Schepisi, Geoff Stacey and some other through 10, 11, 12, 13. Eventually just dropped off the back and plodded on by myself. Easter fail.

Day 2 of Easter. Long race at Shanty Gully. Spur gully with a variety of nasty seedy plants and lantana. Despite a wobble on the first leg ran very well until 8, had caught Mikko at 2 min and Olly at 6 min. Things went downhill from there. Had a mig-leg wobble on the ultra-long leg 9 and dropped back behind Olly and Mikko and then navigated to 11 instead of 9. Was thirsty and tired at this point and was really not enjoying it. Eventually pushed myself onwards, stopped at 12 for a while, then did another 3 controls and decided to pull the pin. A good day to forgot (except for future event organisers ... )

Orienteering long 42:50 [3] 5.4 km (7:56 / km) +280m 6:18 / km

Day 1 of Easter. A big mistake on 2 ruined an otherwise steady run. I started #1 safely by following the fence but lost contact soon after and was very lucky to stumble over the control when I thought I was a couple of hundred metres away! 30s-1min lost here. On number 2 I set the theme for the weekend by running well off line in the vague area and hit the rocks well east of the control, costing 4 min. After that I was alright and got a push along from Muzza who caught me at 8. I also lost close to a minute at 7 because of picking a route with some thicker vegetation and then missing the control a little. Disappointed to make the mistake on 2; I just don't seem to be able to eliminate one big dumb mistake per race.

After making a final preparations I went out and ran the long prologue course and then the short green course. I had thought I would try to set a good time to compare to the guys racing today but I wasn't really motivated and didn't push myself at all. Managed to do the whole thing without looking at the map - I know that little area pretty well now! I was alarmed to find out that Aston Key later did the green course faster than I did!

The prologue went really well on the whole. Almost everyone gave very positive feedback, they found it fun and it was obviously challenging while still remaining sprint-like in nature. It was pleasing that the challenges that we had planned were challenges in reality and people made mistakes in ways we had predicted. Anna and I followed the event with a few well earned beers :)

Note

Spent 9 hours out at Wilmot's Waterholes putting out controls for the prologue tomorrow. Wasn't difficult, just slow and tedious. Had some unexpected stand maintenance to do when some of the rivets holding the SI plates busted off while I was bashing the stands in. It was a long day and wasn't feeling enthusiastic about the whole thing. Saw one of the red-bellied black snakes Anna and I came across previously.

Shortened Mona's fartlek session up at the reservoir - only did 2 x 1min instead 4x. Felt slow and unfit.
