Orienteering 48:34 [3] 9.57 km (5:04 / km) +1m 5:04 / km
ahr:119 max:165

Checking controls for an upcoming Street-O. Calves holding up ok. And spring has sprung, so what’s not to like.

* the stupid thing. 6.2/110 with gaffled mass start.

(But the calves were fine, thanks to some massage and stretching and the fact that it’s always easier off track.)

Mass start was good fun except I tried to keep up with Adam and Murray up the first hill, which was a bad idea (and anyway futile.) Nav was ok despite the f*ing headlamp that kept slipping down my face - I really need to get a decent one soon.

Think I managed 5th of 45 but not sure.

Bollocks. After ignoring the obvious niggle-signs for weeks and not doing any stretching / strength / massage, today was the day when it started falling apart.

So my right achilles has been hurting for ages and today was no different. Then after 10 minutes my left calf started pulling a bit, which was bearable until after 30 minutes my right calf started pulling even more.

It was pretty painful and I would have stopped, but I was exactly halfway round a 12k circle. As walking didn’t hurt any less, I kept going and just about made it round on one leg.

Quite painful afterwards although not as bad as it could have been. Think it will sort itself out* in a week if I actually do the strength / stretching / massage I ought to have been all along.

On the plus side, the speed was really good; under 56’ for the first time in ages and only 2’ away from PB.

*assuming I don’t do anything stupid like the Richmond Park Night-O tomorrow...

Running 1:17:36 [3] 16.17 km (4:48 / km) +172m 4:33 / km
ahr:156 max:184

Wimbledon loop with Abi. Easy pace but reasonable time nonetheless. Good to start a bit more slowly.

Running 36:51 [3] 8.53 km (4:19 / km) +15m 4:17 / km
ahr:186 max:198

To Clapham Junction from work.

Took a while to get out so worried about missing Clapham train, hence pushed it pretty hard. Perfect combo of light rucksack, nice weather (12C, cloudy, light wind) and few interruptions made it pretty damn fast.

Proof once again that “it’s all in your head” although it might take a little while to beat this time.

Running 4:30 [3] 1.0 km (4:30 / km)

From station to home.

Sprint O Race, Birgu / Cospicuosa, Malta.
Orienteering country no. 42 (or 43 if you count Greenland.)

Decent enough race with lots of hills, a few hesitations but nothing major. Only 15th out of 32 but lots of good people including the winner Yannick Michiels (who took 19.15 so only 4 mins behind.)

Beat my old Austrian buddy Phil by 90 secs which was a bonus.

Running 58:09 [3] 12.56 km (4:38 / km) +111m 4:26 / km
ahr:143 max:159

Usual. Tired from busy weeks (mostly self inflicted.)

Lots of headwind which is getting a bit boring (and was mentally tough.)

Running 40:41 [3] 7.47 km (5:27 / km) +92m 5:08 / km

Running 56:33 [3] 12.57 km (4:30 / km) +112m 4:18 / km

Usual. Slower start, faster finish. Lots of headwind on the uphill.

Running 39:56 [3] 8.46 km (4:43 / km) +14m 4:41 / km
ahr:136 max:152

Second attempt at run (partway) home, this time with Garmin.

Turns out it is way shorter than I thought, although the tracking through London is not very accurate - wonder whether that is just a city thing or the satellites had an off day? Thinking it might be the latter as Street-O tracking is normally quite decent.

OK effort into steady headwind (not surprising as route is mostly straight line south), with more people and cars in the way than last week.

Running 4:09 [3] 0.82 km (5:05 / km)

Running 1:17:29 [3] 16.2 km (4:47 / km) +172m 4:32 / km
ahr:135 max:147

Self-made “Tough Mudder” with Abi around Wimbledon Common.

All the slipping and sliding made it rather tough, although Abi seemed to be mostly unaffected.

Generally not feeling it recently (the times are ok but it’s all really hard work), which might be related to relatively intense job or possibly to not eating enough (and particularly for breakfast.)

Running 56:57 [4] 12.62 km (4:31 / km) +114m 4:19 / km

Seriously hard work, legs like treacle in the headwind up the hill.

Time still fairly quick so probably set off too fast.
