Note

Off to Stockholm Indoor Cup again tomorrow - very excited. In addition to the indoor race, they also have an 18k untimed long run. Last year this was in a Proper Swedish Forest so I only did half, but this year we’re next to Stockholm C so it’s sprint and city maps including the old town. Yay!
12 PM

Running 38:35 [3] 8.4 km (4:36 / km) +110m 4:19 / km
ahr:143 max:163

Felt pretty light and floaty. Decent time.

Nice day although surprisingly slippy given hard frost overnight.

Running 39:59 [3] 8.43 km (4:45 / km) +96m 4:29 / km

With Abi. Frosty but clear so ground very firm.

Body felt a bit tired but legs ok, so not a bad effort. Despite pretending otherwise, I really am not a morning person.

Running 58:22 [3] 12.6 km (4:38 / km) +114m 4:26 / km
ahr:144 max:183

A run of four quarters.
First 3k “god I feel awful, might have to stop again”
Second 3k “ok, I think I might just about get round”
Third 3k “this hill doesn’t feel so bad actually”
Last 3k “let’s push this a bit!!”

I guess that’s a good thing.

The time was still only average, but it was really windy for about half of it (though felt like all of it).

Strength 20:00 [3]

One set of strength. Hadn’t done this for ages and it showed.

Orienteering 43:21 [3] 6.14 km (7:04 / km) +73m 6:40 / km
ahr:137 max:167

Oxshott and Esher Night-O (5.2/100)

Zero degrees and sleet & fog making for an interesting experience - also meant that I was soaked through by about halfway.

Pretty tough course but navigation was good (if a bit rock and roll in places) until the very last control where I went slightly the wrong way and proceeded to lose my dibber in some grot. Looked for 5 minutes and was about to give up when I found it eventually.

Also went over my ankle halfway and pretty painful now - though experience shows should be ok in a couple of days.

Great fun though, if a little insane.

UPDATE: Ankle is fine as expected. Came 4th overall despite the 5' lost, would have been 2nd without.

Puttenham Common Black course (11.7/315).

Shadowed Abi all the way round the course as I really want to help her find stuff more quickly. Very weird not being in control of navigation but time passed quickly enough, helped by a lovely sunny day.

A lot of learnings for the debrief tonight :-)

Running 32:55 [3] 6.63 km (4:58 / km) +92m 4:39 / km
ahr:138 max:167

Brr. Felt weak and had to stop a couple of times to even get this far. Didn’t help that I fell flat on my face once after slipping in the mud.

More sleep needed plus some iron tablets maybe.

Running 48:17 [3] 10.13 km (4:46 / km) +155m 4:26 / km
ahr:139 max:181

Reasonable effort and nice to get a PB on what might be the last run on this route (as I’m moving jobs.) Unlike Andy, I’m not going to get all blubbery anout it though.

Downhill Skiing 1:00:00 [1]

Ski weekend with Tobi.

Good fun and great to be in the snow (of which there was lots overnight), but I’d forgotten how tiring the whole thing is especially with a 7 year old who is not that great at skiing (yet.)

Running 37:29 [3] 7.37 km (5:05 / km) +106m 4:45 / km
ahr:128 max:142

Nice and easy. First time over 5m/k for ages, but it was stick-to-your-shoes-so-much-it-makes-lifting-feet-a-pain muddy.

Running 49:29 [3] 10.11 km (4:54 / km) +153m 4:33 / km
ahr:132 max:158

Body still tired, not helped by Claudia taking her secondary school entrance exams - definitely way more stressful for the parent than the child.

Close to giving up on the first climb but clung on by my (proverbial) fingernails. Rewarded with a gorgeous sunny day and unusually firm ground after 3 weeks of very little rain.

Running 1:34:09 [3] 19.44 km (4:51 / km) +155m 4:39 / km
ahr:147 max:169

Q: How do you know when you’ve overcooked your run?

A: When halfway your body starts shutting down but the only way is back is to run the same(ish) way back again.

Longest run for 6 weeks but I learnt that 105’ was just that bit too much. Felt good for first 6k or so and then got progressively more tired and slow. Didn’t help I hadn’t eaten more than a big bowl of muesli all day.

Stuck to it until 3k from the end, but then just couldn’t keep running so walked / jogged back.

Then felt dead at home for the last 2 hours, but 2 cups of sugary tea and a large slice of cake have partly revived me. Oh well, hopefully no long term damage done other than mentally...

Running 38:20 [3] 8.35 km (4:36 / km) +100m 4:20 / km

Slowly but surely the speed is coming back.
Cold but beautiful day.

Nice short loop around the park with Abi. Knackered for the first 2k from going to bed lateish, but then felt rather good (certainly better than for some time.)
