Note

Resume of winter training: A very easy Sep-Oct (3.5hrs avg), a pretty good Nov-Dec (4.5hrs) and very good Jan (5.5 hrs), but a screwed up Feb and Mar with no running (even though I kept the hours up ok with biking, sometimes getting to 6)

Shame that I am not improving on last winters great base, which I really felt coming through in the autumn.

If I want to seriously go to Japan 2005, I have to make sure next winter is at least 6-7 hrs on average, so that I can move to 8-9 in 04/05. It will be tough, but all depends on what happens workwise..who knows?

Orienteering 36:37 [4] 5.5 km (6:39 / km) +105m 6:05 / km

Regional relay champs, first leg

Fun to be out in the woods again, a beautiful day. Unfortunately the course was very easy so I got passed by a bunch of people along the way (was first out of the start field, of course). Technically clean but just not fast enough yet (plus the cold still lingering) - came 6th or so in the end, about 3 mins down.

Running 10:00 [2] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Warmup and down

Saturday Mar 29, 2003 #

Gym 40:00 [3]

Had a bit of a cold for the second half of the week, so got back into training easy

20 bike
20 elliptical

felt ok

Tuesday Mar 25, 2003 #

Running 30:37 [3] 4.0 mi (7:39 / mi)

Easy run, foot felt ok but generally quite tired

Monday Mar 24, 2003 #

Strength 45:00 [3]

3 sets, felt good

Orienteering 39:03 [4] 6.0 km (6:31 / km) +85m 6:05 / km

Well, I was meant to go biking but I was with Abi at this orienteering meet and they had entry on the day...it was a lovely run, warm, sunlit, fairly easy. No mistakes, ran slowly but steadily (winner on M21L, 9.5K in 49') - slow for foot, but also because fighting off a cold that Abi had got.

Very happy though, foot didn't seem to mind too much. Am signed up for team relay next weekend, hooray for some 'real' orienteering!

Running 25:06 [3] 3.5 mi (7:10 / mi)

Easy run at Ermenonville. Nice sunset, felt ok. Foot hurt a little afterwards but not too bad

Running 20:12 [4] 3.0 mi (6:44 / mi)

So I did some more research and found that running isn't necessarily bad, as long as the pain doesn't get worse. I also found out today that my physio is useless because she showed me a stretch to do today - "put your hands on the wall, stretch your calves out back, do that twice a day". I was going to tell her the stretches I'm doing need about a minute's explanation each not 10 secs but decided it wasn't worth it.

On the upside, I have decided to start running again. 20 mins today and then +5 mins per run until I get to an hour or so

I also learnt how to tape for O'ing with plantar fasciitis, so will have to try that out soon as well!

Wednesday Mar 19, 2003 #

Strength 45:00 [3]

3 sets, felt good

Tuesday Mar 18, 2003 #

Gym 50:00 [3]

Good session: 30min elliptical (617 kcal), 20min bike

I am in awe of William's 666 kcal for the same time, either he works a lot harder than me or he is a lot fatter...unfortunately that's unlikely given previous evidence

Sunday Mar 16, 2003 #

Mountain Bike 43:00 [4]

First part of biking with Abi, about 14k + 300m climb. Very warm and sunny

Mountain Bike 1:40:30 [4]

Second part of biking, 30k + 500m climb. Nice again, but rough for the last 20 minutes.

Saturday Mar 15, 2003 #

Mountain Bike 2:20:00 [4]

On roads only, near Troyes in France. About 42km and about 800m climb (thats a bit of a guess, but it did go up and down all the time). Lovely weather, lovely area. Very tired at the end

Thursday Mar 13, 2003 #

Running 20:00 [3]

A few random bits of running to set some parko controls for Abi

Wednesday Mar 12, 2003 #

Strength 45:00 [3]

3 sets

Tuesday Mar 11, 2003 #

Gym 50:00 [3]

30mins bike, 20mins elliptical

Felt quite tired, especially on the elliptical. Not much sleep the last couple of days, plus feeling a little under the weather

Sunday Mar 9, 2003 #

Mountain Bike 1:07:00 [4]

I only had an hour so I decided to give it some serious large - 32k in 67' in the end, quite happy with that.

A beautiful day in great settings around Chambord castle. Spring is finally here...15C, that's 120F for you American dudes.

Saturday Mar 8, 2003 #

Mountain Bike 1:45:00 [3]

With Abi, in Random-sur-Crap (near Orléans). Not a great outing for a number of reasons

Thursday Mar 6, 2003 #

Gym 31:00 [3]

The usual to start with, but then stopped..no zip

Sunday Mar 2, 2003 #

Mountain Bike 2:15:00 [4] 24.0 km (5:38 / km) +300m 5:18 / km

First MTB O, Foret de Fontainebleau. I went for the longest course which was designed for the French squad who were there on training..34k, ended up a bit too much for me when I did about 70% in 2h15. Apparently the fastest dudes did all of it in 2h, so I am losing about 50%, compared to about 25% on foot O (to the world elite).

Quite fun but also very tiring. My butt also hurts, surprisingly. So a good alternative while my foot is buggered, but not quite the same as "real" O!

Saturday Mar 1, 2003 #

Gym 1:00:00 [3]

Usual stuff, felt a bit tired but ok

Running 5:00 [3] 1.0 km (5:00 / km)

Run to the gym

Mountain Bike 35:00 [3]

Picked up a friends bike for tomorrow. Since he lives all the way across town it made for a fairly good ride..
