Running 40:20 [3] 8.5 km (4:45 / km)

Run home from new job (Gt Portland St tube) via St James’s & Battersea Parks.

Forgot my Garmin so distance is an estimate. Slightly fiddly route in places but found it ok as it’s partly the same as back from Eurostar a few years ago.

Hard work but good effort and great sightseeing value.

Sneaky day trip to the Yorkshire Dales to celebrate the end of my British Airways Silver card this week.

It seemed only appropriate to run up Yorkshire’s highest peak. Run up was fairly pleasant, nothing so steep as not to be runnable, although a lot of it was slabs of stone. Downhill was less pleasant as it was steeper and rockier.

Amazing views as the weather was ridiculously nice for February - 15C and sunny.

Warmup Tring Station > Ashridge

I changed jobs a few weeks ago and with the old job went the company car. We decided not to replace it and it’s been a really liberating experience actually (plus saves tons of money.)

So as a result I have started to look for public transport options to go to orienteering races, and it’s surprisingly easy, with this one a lovely short run from a train station.

Ashridge North, Black course (13.6/190)

Generally a fairly runnable forest although not as good as it used to be (a lot of windfall and also ankle high bramble patches).

OK technically, maybe 2’ lost in total by faffing in the circle - some of the controls were pretty hidden though and I didn’t get on particularly well with the map. So overall acceptable.

Physically not too brilliant either, maybe started off too fast but the last 3k or so were really hard work. Just about hung in there but totally spent at the end.

I’m sure I used to do Ashridge Blacks in under 80 so I may be getting slower, but I’m pretty sure the forest didn’t help. Be very interesting to see winning times.

It would appear to be a PB.

Legs quite heavy from yesterday and it was raining, so I felt a bit like Carsten Jørgensen going up hills (hands up who remembers the flailing arms and rugby style running) but in a good way.

Runs like these are definitely good for the psyche.

Attempt at a “really” fast run.

Initially the plan was to run 10k in 40ish, then 5k in 20ish. Stopped after 4k (in exactly 4mpk) as body pretty tired and mentally really tough just on my own in Bushy Park. (Also shows once again that I am a real wimp when taking pain, unlike Abi.)

Will aim to get to 5k next time and perhaps do this as part of a real race.

Although the flipside is, what is the point of doing a fast 10k? I am now pretty good at fastish 30-90 minute runs which is exactly what I need in orienteering (and it shows.) So why bother...

Decent effort despite too large a cup of milky tea just before setting off.

Note

Seems I was lucky to get in and out of Stockholm relatively on time. The airport was shut / severely reduced for most of Sunday and good chunks of Friday and Saturday too.

It was quite cool taxiing over what felt like quite deep snow when arriving on Friday night. I didn't know planes could do that.

Running 40:27 [3] 8.34 km (4:51 / km) +110m 4:33 / km

With Abi, hard work this. Legs heavyish but ok given Saturday’s extravaganza. But had trouble breathing and tight stomach - might be fighting off Abi’s bug.

Not too bad considering though.

Came 14th of about 200. Pretty pleasing and at this rate of progress I will be the winner by 2026!

Running race 39:54 [5] 5.63 km (7:05 / km)
ahr:119 max:156

Stockholm Indoor Cup.

This is fast becoming my favourite race. The detail that goes into the planning is just incredible, and I really did think my brain was going to explode at some point. One control was in an auditorium where they played a film at full pelt, and of course there was the obligatory toilet seat control (for the control description they used the wet pit symbol). Oh and 9 floors in total.

A bit too much standing around in places, and I’m sure I missed some better routes (but somehow don’t want to check if I did!) But overall, no real mistakes and kept my cool throughout. Last year I managed 16th, would be nice to beat that.

A definite must-do once in your life.

Orienteering 1:45:15 [2] 17.64 km (5:58 / km) +353m 5:25 / km
ahr:136 max:177

Long Jog (with map but no proper controls or timing) after the indoor-O. It’s nice of them to put it on, but you can see it’s not a priority as some of the legs & controls were very random. Particularly as there was about 10cm of fresh snow on the ground.

I did about 80% this time, only cutting out one smallish loop and a few super gratuitous corners.

As the school was in the centre of Stockholm, this was a nice sightseeing loop including lots of view points and the old city at the end. They also put out two drink / raisin controls which was ace. Gotta love the Swedes.

Took it pretty easy and didn’t fade too much at the end so a good day’s work overall.
