Running 1:10:00 [3]

Run from my place, in the pissing rain. Hadn't really expected anyone to turn up, and was planning on going back to sleep if nobody showed but mark and Wendy braved the rain, which meant I had to run too. Nice easy pace, except for trying to race mark up the hills. Figured it was going to be a shorter run than usual so better do a couple of fast bits.
Porridge and coffee for breakfast were great.

Headed out to the block for the rest of the weekend. More like a proper house each time we go there. Real beds now! Pizza oven gotanother good workout.

Note

quite sore today. was looking forward to riding to work, but it was raining at the critical moment and the radar didn't look good. the legs could have really done with a nice easy ride this morning.

either winter has arrived way early, or we've all been teleported to melbourne. neither option is good. I want my late summer in brisbane back!

Running (commute) 1:00:00 [3]

Run home from work, with mark from spring hill to Toowong. A little faster than I would have run by myself and feet are feeling a little blistered after first run on the road in ages.

Cycling 1:30:00 [3]

mtb ride in gap creek with dan. Took a while to get the hang of riding on trails again, and had to walk a few things i've never walked before, but got there in the end and no crashes. One attempt at a dan short cut, but couldn't find the trail and bailed.
Feeling heaps better on the 29er now that I've changed the set up a bit. Longer and lower now.

Cycling (commute) 1:00:00 [3]

foggy morning. quite cool to start with - thought it might nearly be time to find the arm warmers and vest... but by the time I got to work the sun was out and it was quite warm. will give the winter gear a few more weeks I think.

Running long 1:27:00 [3]

Long run from Wendy's. Good turn out this week, and I ended up running with Katelyn and Wendy. Struggled early but felt good later on in the run so did a bit of a surge for the last 20 mins. Stuffed at and end breakfast was awesome after.

Note

Went to Byron for the rest of the weekend. Took the board, but surf was to big and messy for me so had a snooze on the beach instead.

Orienteering race 1:26:43 [4] 10.5 km (8:16 / km)

Long race (hagaby) at collins creek.
my motivation and expectations for this race were awesomely low at the start of this race, and I just figured I would cruise around and try to avoid to many stupid mistakes in the lantana. I mostly succeeded, but long splits on the first two loops meant that I was well down on the pack for the first part of the course... then I came in off the third loop to find I was in second, but only just ahead of Jasmine and Aislinn. stuffed the first control on the last loop, and could see Aislinn getting closer (helped a bit by Kas on the M20 course). tried to stay ahead, but my legs were completely dead, and a little wobble on the final control meant that Aislinn ran straight past. oh well.

still the best NOL result of the year (although a severely depleted field), and the cyclones girls won again!

Orienteering 9:00:00 [1]

running around organising the second NOL sprint at UQ. big day, but all worked out well in the end.

we got to the uni quite early to put out controls, and encountered our first attempt at an event ending crisis - the road through the area which had the early part of the courses was closed and a crane was loading building materials on to a building roof. fortunately they promised to be gone by lunchtime, and wouldn't impact on the event.
as we were putting out controls we found a bunch of other fenced off areas - turns out saturday morning is a hive of activity for contractors at the uni, but there was enough pedestrian access around the building areas that it wasn't going to disrupt runners.

things went busily, but smoothly for the rest of the morning (even found time for lunch!!), but when runners started coming in it became apparent that there was a problem with the controls. it took us a little while to figure out, including a run around the potentially offending numbers, but still no joy. eventually we figured that it was swapped SI units - 68 and 89, that we hadn't noticed when putting out the controls. fortunately Tim could just swap them in the computer and it was all good for the rest of the event.

The elite race went really well - the start worked fine and the races were exciting, and it seemed like most of the runners really enjoyed the courses. Very happy that it all worked out well in the end and to be finally done with NOL organising duties (for this round at least!).

Also great to have so many people come to dinner afterwards, and actually have time to talk to people!

Orienteering race 52:11 [4]

last day of easter. totally exhausted and really struggled. made some dumb mistakes too, which didn't help (Laurina was making some equally good ones elsewhere, and we kept running into each other). got going a bit once the courses came back down the hill.

Orienteering race 1:37:09 [5] 11.1 km (8:45 / km)

long distance easter race. knew it was going to be a long, hot day out, so started fairly conservatively. got through the early part of the course pretty easily and caught Bridget around 5 - 8. decided to take the road option on the second long leg, but cut up a track to the ridge again just after half way, to avoid the nasty climb at the end. I think it was a good option, but I wasn't running fast enough to actually get any advantage on that leg.
made my only real mistake on the leg back down the hill into the small mining detail where I ended up too low on the hill.
struggled back through the last few controls to the finish. very tired, and legs burning with all the prickles.

Orienteering 38:43 [3]

Easter day 1. fairly un-motivated after our organising day yesterday, but knew that the terrain was really good and hoped the course would match. had an uninspiring start and lost a bit of time early on, particularly on 2, where I was reading too much into the slope between the controls and pulled up early.
trudged along to about 5, where vanessa caught me, and expected her to run away easily, but she was making enough small errors that I stayed with her.
nice run in the end, particularly the last part of the course.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3]

more running around the event putting out fence crossings and some taping.

Orienteering 16:45 [5]

had a run around the W21E course to check that everything was ok for the race, and see what time we were likely to come up with later on. I didn't look at the map much (I know the area pretty well now), but ran to a couple of the guys controls as a result.
I figured the girls should run about 2 mins quicker than me (which they nearly did), but was surprise to see how many got caught out by the trickier legs.

was really pleased to see that people enjoyed the event and that we got about the right mix of speed and technical challenge. it was also good to find that other details, such as the spectator hill worked really well and added to the atmosphere of the race.
definitely enjoyed the post race beers!

Orienteering 30:00 [3]

got to Wilmonts waterholes at about 5 and ran around all the controls for the sprint to check everything was good for tomorrow. (after Mark had spent the whole day putting them all out!).

after a very stressful and busy week it was so nice to cruise around in some very nice forest with the early evening light. could just feel the stress melting away, and all the controls were right, so that helped a lot!
