Orienteering 41:22 [4] 6.8 km (6:05 / km)

Break o day. ran the schools champs senior girls course in the afternoon after their race. very fast, but vague for most of the course. had a little wobble on 2, and then stuffed up the second control in the erosion as I didn't read the gullys before the dam wall control right (and Ev had said they might be pulling in some of the far controls, so lack of flag didn't nessesarily mean that I was in the wrong place. stuffed the last one in the erosion also - too far to the left, and there was so much unmarked stuff it was hard to figure out exactly what was going on. biddy caught me about a minute there. ran most of the rest ok, but dropped down too far on the third last and had to nail the last bit to make sure I came in with a faster time than the school kids. didn't make it easy for myself though.

Orienteering race (Vic long champs) 1:10:54 [5] 9.1 km (7:47 / km) +405m 6:22 / km

at choke-em gully. quite a good run. still had trouble running (stupid slow legs), but gradually felt better as the course progressed. some hesitations, but the only real time loss was the miss-placed 8th control, cos I ran up the hill to see if the gully continued up, instead of down (which I figured was so obviously wrong) ah well. those 3mins would have been quite useful in the end.

Orienteering race 40:25 [4] 4.7 km (8:36 / km)

Race fail. Generally got around ok, but couldn't get my poor old tired legs to run (and it was kinda wierd trying to run with legs so cold they were numb). 14-15 was a bit of a disaster - axed myself running into a broken-ish fence that I didn't see, and then slipped over and broke my compass (separate crashes), and then took a while to regain any sense of direction. lost a few minutes there, and then went to a wrong control. got things together again on the way to 17, but the damage was done.

Orienteering race 1:11:33 [4] 6.4 km (11:11 / km) +220m 9:32 / km

Qld long champs at Cascades. The map has thickened up quite a bit over the last few years, so running was restricted to the bare rock and some small patches of white(ish) forest. Always amazing though, how even though you can't get anywhere fast, you can get lost incredibly quickly on this map!
Started ok - got into the circle for the first control and saw Tara leaving (4mins) but still took nearly another minute to bash my way into the flag. 2 was on a rocky slope with heaps of junk not big enough to make it on the map more than rocky ground. But somehow I'd managed to get to the right place, and the one decent sized boulder had my flag on it.
Climbed to much on 4, and got distracted by a rock that was obviously way too big to be the one I was looking for, but at least it gave me a good place to relocate off.
Got a bit off line mid leg 8-9 and climbed a bit more than I should, but decided to make the most of it and went out to the track to the north which gave the only decent running in the whole course, and a much easier approach to the control. picked up over 2mins on that split, so definitely the best option!.
Laurina came past me in the last few controls, and was running so well I figured she must have caught me, but turned out I'd past her without seeing her, but we had a nice little run through the last few controls together, and she entertained me with an awesome faceplant in the marshy area on the way to the last control!

I would rate the course as the most technically difficult that I have run at cascades and I was very scared of getting very lost. was extremely cautious the whole way round, and managed to get through with only about 2 1/2 mins of mistakes over the course. possibly could have run faster, but the risk of some huge stuff up was too high.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]

warm up. did intend to do a warm down, but blisters said no.

Event: Qld Champs

Orienteering race 30:18 [5] 4.3 km (7:03 / km) +95m 6:21 / km

Qld middle champs at 'Over the border', where half of the course was in NSW. Beautiful terrain - fast, open granite with not too much fallen timber, and enough rock to be pretty technically challenging.

Started badly, and over shot the first short leg, and found the mens first control instead. slowed down a bit, and hit the next few fine.
Had a nervous run out to 7 on a long leg into a very vague low vis area, but hit the control spot on. missed a little on both 9 and 10 cos I didn't read the map well enough, and seemed to mysteriously end up off line in the last 100m before the control after passing a very definite rock. prob lost about 2mins over the course, but pretty happy with the run compared to recent efforts. quite hot running in the middle of the day, and struggled to push the pace at any stage during the run.
finished up 5mins clear of a group of about 4.

Cycling 3:00:00 [2]

mtb skills course at bunya with the girls, taught by Aido. mainly focusing on cornering and jumping on/off/over stuff. some good crashes, mainly by kathy, who had a few very spectactular otb efforts... she's going to be very sore this week!!

Saturday Sep 12, 2009 #

Running 1:00:00 [3]

lap of coottha on trails with biddy. hip has been playing up, so kept it to a not so long run this morning. dragged out the hip-belt thing again, and I think it helped, cos I didn't get any extra pain during the run (but it cuts off blood supply to my legs, so doesn't help me run fast!).
coffee and danish at the french patiserie after. danish was awesome, but the coffee was so burnt that even adding sugar didn't make it good :-(

Friday Sep 11, 2009 #

Cycling 1:40:00 [3]

SS ride in gap creek with Dan (home again! yay!). all the main tracks, and a lap of the far ones as well. found a few more things I can't ride, but Dan couldn't make those climbs either.

Orienteering intervals 25:00 [5] 5.4 km (4:38 / km)

sprintervals at gardens point/qut, set by olly. 5 short courses with interval starts, then same in reverse, but 2+3 and 4+5 were run together, and with mass starts.

Running warm up/down 16:00 [2]

Cycling 50:00 [3]

Gym 50:00 [4]

Race Elements. with Bec and Kathy. very tired, and found the session pretty tough. nasty sciatic pain down my right leg and had no strength in that leg at all. got a massage after which seemed to settle things down a bit.
