Getting hit by a car wasn't the greatest of starts to the weekend, even if it was a low-speed encounter (with a car going the wrong way up a one-way road) in the Preston Market car park which did no lasting damage. (Preston Market is a fine place to see Melbourne in its full multicultural glory, but a side-effect of this is genuine Roman or Athenian parking - I learned early on to park some distance away and walk).
The trip up wasn't the smoothest either with a traffic jam of cars trying to get into Calder Park - it didn't look like a motor racing crowd so I'm not quite sure what it was. (Whatever it was, at least the weather was kinder than the 42-degrees-turned-into-big-thunderstorm for the infamous 1993 Guns n' Roses concert, several survivors of which work alongside me).
Eventually made it to Kooyoora a bit later than I'd liked and didn't warm up as well as I would have liked. Evidently my brain was also lacking in a warm-up, as I was very hesitant into the first control and dropped 40 seconds or so. Settled down after that, although it was halfway before my legs really felt like they were moving well, and I don't think going left on 4 was the best option (Bruce went through me there). A decent second half; Bruce was 4 minutes up on me at halfway and that gap stayed to the end.
