Oceania Middle distance- Yackandandah mining madness
I love middle distances, they are so much fun, so intense and so much happens in that 40 minutes! Unfortunately I was a late starter so didn't get to spectate watch the GPS tracking on the screen, it would have been so exciting! What an awesome event, great map and arena and courses!
I planned to be careful and not try to run fast but obviously didn't reinforce that well enough in my head to last through the whole course. Started well with the feeling I love best in orienteering - running fast through rough bush but still reading the map well and making good decisions rather than just charging straight and hoping (which I started doing later in the course). I was pretty clean up to the spectator loop with a good lead but it fell apart at #14 where I took 4 minutes of slightly frantic, inneffective relocation to find it. I think I left #13 too fast, being slightly annoyed that I was a little low (although didnt lose any time), and didn't bother to make a sensible route choice and just ran straight which was ok but I didn't have a good aproach. I was so close in the neighboring gully but lost confidence and went a bit headless chook.
Then rushed through the rest of the course and lost a further minute at the second last when I thought I was looking for a gully instead of a spur.
Obviously need to work on the mental aspect as I can run and navigate fast in technical terrain (faster than I realise) but make silly mistakes loosing way too much time, often towards the end of the course when I am within a few metres of the control (like WOC middle and relay)... Mainly dicipline with speed control and confidence.
Maybe it would be more satisfying to have run slowly and cleanly than fast but frustrated with the same result?
4th about 3.5mins down on Lizzie and 1min from Sus and Jo.

collecting controls, without a compass! spiked them all (al slow speed...)
got hungry but had no appetite to eat... odd? similar to after yesterdays run, feeling queezy. Felt ok after forcing down some food.
