Orienteering 57:11 [3] 3.8 km (15:03 / km)

MAO, day 3. Lovcen again. Same finish but running on the other side of the road.

Had expected it to be worse after the sample map having lots of green. The start at least was in beautiful open country with big rocks. Was pretty slow, but minimised mistakes. Got lucky on 8 which was mapped a bit weird and was lead into it. Ended up almost back at 10 on the way to 12 - everyone made a mistake here but I ended up in a big obvious yellow depression, whereas the others ended up in green rocks that all looked the same. Really had to concentrate hard for the entire race!

Orienteering 45:57 [3] 3.8 km (12:06 / km)

MAO day 2, Lovcen.

Another amazing location, looking up at Njegos' Mausoleum. Complex depression and rocks (which I couldn't understand) at the start, followed by a more physical part in open areas. Was feeling the effects of lack of training at the end, after having made some mistakes at the start.

Orienteering 19:14 [3] 2.1 km (9:10 / km)

Montenegro Adriatic Open, WRE sprint, Sveti Stefan.

Afternoon sprint race in a pretty speccy location. First part through 'forest' with a bit of ivy-like undergrowth, then through a section where most things seemed to be impassable (or not?). Busted out the first ever WRE win.

Running 50:00 [3]

Podgorica, running on the Gorica (little hill). Lots and lots of people out walking, but only saw 3 joggers. A large part of this 'run' was stopping to take photos (not included in time). Not feeling super fit, but found out today the the races coming up are sprint, middle, middle so I should make it through!

Orienteering 20:19 [4] 2.3 km (8:50 / km)

Sprint training in amongst some housing commission flats beyond the end of the U Bahn in Vienna.

Running late as coming direct from Eurovision. Awesome detailled little course with lots of direction changes. Main time loss was about 40s when I didn't realise that a grey passageway involved opening a closed door.

Strong Antipodean contigent as Tim Robertson won the mens (didn't realise he was there). Couldn't quite match that and came second.

Orienteering 40:49 [3] 5.5 km (7:25 / km)

Sprint style race in St Pölten in the rain. Wasn't in the best of moods and didn't start concentrating until about the 7th control. Lots of long legs with a river in the way. Didn't enjoy it so much.

3 AM

Orienteering 1:23:26 [3] 4.3 km (19:24 / km)

Short difficult night. This was like the 2nd short difficult I ran during the day through the green shit, except at night so even worse.

After the 2nd control, the rest of the course was in green, so spent a lot of time going around and would have run way further than the straight line.

Got lucky on 5 and lead some people in to it, had trouble on 7 where vegetation and even my compass didn't seem to make sense, searched a while for 8 (on a stump in a patch of green in a clearing that seemed to have a lot more patches of green in it), searched again for 12 in another area where I couldn't understand the vegetation.

Except for the bizarreness of going orienteering at 3am, did NOT enjoy this.
8 AM

Orienteering 26:28 [3] 3.4 km (7:47 / km)

Short easy. This was bliss. Apart from the fact that my heels were too sore to run on until about the 2nd last control. The sun was up, the birds were singing and I didn't have to run again. Big smile.

So nice to be able to run and not fight through stuff or hunt for controls. Beautiful way to finish!

10 AM

Orienteering 49:43 [3] 5.4 km (9:12 / km)

Thüringer 24h relay. Team 94, Hurricane, 3rd runner.

Woah. Saved all my training for the week up and spent it at the weekend. Had a minor headcold during the week and was visiting people and didn't really get around to training anyway.

First taste of the forest on a short diffcult course. Found the forest super hard to get through in parts, which would be a theme for the rest of the event. Depending on where you were, you were held back by undergrowth, blackberries, fallen timber, thick pines of a combination of the above. There were some nice mossy open forest areas too.

Only one difficulty on this course getting through an area of crap which I should have gone around. Got disoriented a bit but eventually found my way out.
3 PM

Orienteering 1:04:57 [3] 5.2 km (12:29 / km)

Second run. Another short difficult. This time mostly through green shit. There was quite a lot of swearing about German forests. Was not much fun.

Had trouble on 4 getting stuck in shit and by this time I still hadn't really figured out what the different greens/yellows on the map are. Vegetation around 5 didn't make any sense at all. Then found some more green controls, scratched my fingers on some blackberries, bled a bit, got stuck in some more green, chanced upon a control, then finally got into some nicer forest for the last few contols.
8 PM

Orienteering 1:07:48 [3] 6.7 km (10:07 / km)

Long twilight. Got to a new bit of the map (for me) with some contours and passages through green. Ran without a headlamp until just over half way, then couldn't read the map any more so switched it on. Controls stood out a fair way with reflective tape on them.

Felt like I'd run out of juice about a third the way through and realised I hadn't eaten enough between races. Legs had no power, and even struggled going downhill. Came good somehow during the race though.

Core strength/stretching 15:00 [1]

9 PM

Running 28:00 [3]

Cruisy late run after a day at the Bodensee (my first time there where it hasn't been grey and foggy!). To the Jägerhaus, down to the Brigach, over the bridge to see what time the second hand shop opens and up the hill "home".

Running 35:00 [3]

Cruise through the fields to the north of Donaueschingen and then back through the Buchberg forest. Legs were really struggling across the fields, then brightened up a bit in the forest.

Running 15:00 [4]

Made myself do a few hill intervals on Buchberg. Used to have a good track to do them on, which I think I found in the end. The first few weren't very steep though.

Running 46:00 [3]

Very, very stop-start run in Antwerpen. From Berchem over the Ring freeway to the Nachtegalenpark and then through the Middelheim museum - an outdoor sculpture gallery/park/museum. Lots of photo stops.

Orienteering 56:29 [4] 4.7 km (12:01 / km)

Blackforest3days, middle, Hinterzarten.

Another wet, muddy slog! The other end of the forest to yesterday, with a little bit more climb and a bit less technical. My legs didn't really have it in them today! Lost a lot of height going into the spectator control (in the middle of a ski jump, with the finish at the bottom) which I then had to gain.

Couldn't quite haul in Simone. Next time.

Orienteering 1:35:50 [4] 8.8 km (10:53 / km)

Blackforest3days, Long, Titisee.

A long slog through the forest, which I must have done cleaner than others. Lots of route choice, and I'm never quite sure how the forest works here. Had a bit of a panic when I started and doubted my ability to read a map, but settled in to it after a few controls.

Surprised by my place (as I was yesterday) - I thought the Europeans would be much stronger moving through the forest, but maybe they made mistakes.

Orienteering 21:23 [4] 4.2 km (5:05 / km)

Blackfores3days sprint, Freiburg.

Awesome race, apart from the rain. Made good use of my home ground advantage. It was a bit special running across in front of the cathedral as the bells were ringing at 6pm.

Only one mistake, where I was reading from 3-4 and running from 2-3. Lots of route choice - probably missed a few good ones.
