I was happy with my route choice and map reading. The race choice was go for harder black diamond CPs on the west side of Loree at the start and ignore the matrix section. I made one directional error going for CP 48 aiming for an nearby creek, but was able to correct that. About 30 minutes into the race MH tripped on her snowshoes so MH switched to yak traks which worked out much better. Wore my running snowshoes the entire race even through mud, sketchy ice and road gravel. Anything for an adventure race I guess. I whacked my ankles several times with the snowshoes; always happens when you get tired. Bruises to prove it. Quite the insane icy downhill 150m+ finish dodging hikers, kids and dogs. :(
Not sure I have seen an orienteering race with so many teams over the cut off (3 hr) and have points deducted. We were 7+ min over, so had 240 points taken off at the end. Final placings in this race for many teams literally depended on how fast you sprinted to the finish to not lose points.
The snowshoe raid is quite the challenge. The snow and ice conditions are always a factor, and it was really hard to decide to either use snowshoes or spikes. Weather was a balmy 4-5 degrees the entire race but we knew there was still lots of snow in the Loree Forest.
