Wessex Night League Hatch Warren & Beggarwood Park 2nd
7s down on 1st and 2s around of Nick (who made a big mistake near the end). Never had an after 8 for post run refuelling before... Need to find some perfect shoes for 50% tarmac & 50% mud wet grass conditions!
Pretty wet conditions again, some rain and some wet grass and some mud. The Night Leagues often have this weather! Horrendous drive up in rain and darkness and traffic.
Didn't quite get the right route, went for a controversial out the back through the start which was a good choice. After the Southern estate I stopped and couldn't decide whether to go into the park or not, then hadn't realised the next control was on the other side of the hedge (+1min), maybe should've done 9 and 30 later on when coming back (as didn't realise 5 was in a big dead end).

Cycling to work there and back in the dark after work is a weird experience. Not done the commute for a while.

Lordswood exploring, pretending to be a mountainbike
Definitely wet and muddy in places. Just running around having fun in the woods. Doesn't make sense to drive to it really but means that all the running is nice! Saw a dog struggling and barking in the fast flowing stream. I couldn't see anyone around so started to worry it would drown. Called out and was getting prepared to jump in and save it when the owner arrived. Turns out the dog had smelt the water, absolutely loves it and had ran off.

Not a Common trails exploration. Met up with Nick and he had to run back to the office. Along the bottom of the Avenue and then around the parks and back up. Not the best loop

Introducing my Yoga instructor Richard to a Forest run
Simple loop from Deerleap taking in a few good paths. Trying to make the most of things this week and getting out in the evenings before the clocks change. Had a bit of tightness on the inside part of my left ankle. Not sure what that is about. Good to run with someone different. I may have pushed Richard a tad and his breathing was definitely not as in control as normal!

SOC Matley Heath Blue
Not much to say about my orienteering skills (nice big misses in the bracken to 1 and 3) and then overshot 3 of the later controls. Map was a bit old and the bracken and vegetation causing issues. Good to get out but definitely not that happy with my perfomance!

Trialing a 75% baseline of activity
See if it helps with my pain and fatigue. Going to take last week's activity and do 75% of that for 2 weeks. Glad it's not the 50% discussed! Trying to see it as a challenge, while dreaming of the hills.

Looking forward to getting out for some Sunday orienteering. The weather was perfectl Autumnal weather on the drive down. The area has some interesting contours for the South but is definitely physical and tough underfoot in places! Was in a bit of queue at the start with people either side of me, was catching my minute man fairly well.

Got dragged to control 20 on the way to 3 (+1min), didn't trust the veg mapping, maybe not using my compass well enough and maybe a bit of following.

Rough bearing to number 9 was poor (+1min) Could see a building but it wasn't the one I thought it was.

Final control lost 3:30. Should've gone up the reentrant. On the ridge I was confused and kept doubting whether I was in the right place. I thought the control was on the top of the slope, when I got there realised it was in the reentrant way below. Completely hadn't realised there were contours behind (maybe obscured by circle/green veg). Who knows!

Pretty happy with my run, was only 6s down on Nick before my big mistake. Felt tough going at times but it was rough and I was moving fairly well compared to other people. Felt tired after but I think it was a good post orienteering kind of tired, rather than fatigue,

Cycling 1:41:31 [3] 41.37 km (2:27 / km)

Autumnal loop of the Forest
Out via Eling to Ipley Cross Roads up to Beaulieu road station then Lyndhurst, north, then back through Bartley
Had been aiming for 90 mins but my original route was going up through Emery Down to Minstead. Things with my gears are definitely not right post service. To start, had cold wrists (normal cycling top + blue overlayer + thin gloves left a gap) and had cold toes. Going to take some figuring out what layers and clothes to wear if I continue doing some cycling over the winter. May need to buy some new bits.
Really into the wind all the way across the heathland, sapped all energy out of me and I was really struggling. Had a break at Boltons Bench for some food. Almost came straight back but looked at the map and decided to explore a new bit north of Lyndhurst. Linked up quite well actually and is a good option for another time.

Grasmere to Keswick over Ullscarf and the High Seat Ridge with John
Tarn Crag, Ullscarf, Armboth Fell, High Tove, High Seat, Bleaberry Fell, Walla Crag
Another quality day out in the hills with John. A couple of great mountain marathon-esque route choice legs (Tarn Crag to Ullscarf, then Ullscarf to Armboth Fell) and then over the boggy and tussocky moorland back to Keswick. Very peaty and boggy leading from High Tove to High Seat. John ended up waste deep in water at one point. Of all the glorious fells in the Lakes, why have I been up High Seat and Bleaberry twice this week? Answer: because I have dragged John round some grot in the last 4 years in my quest and he hasn't complained! Always amazed how keen and supportive he is to do silly routes for me to pick up Wainwrights. Potentially more keen than I am! On the way up High Tove, we debated the options. I most fancied heading down to Derwent Water, but was persuaded to continue and stay high back into Keswick. Remembered I had jelly babies and had a load and felt really strong descending High Tove. Some fun descents off Bleaberry and Walla Crag.
