Long Valley South training with Julian
One of the SN Solo-O courses planned by Colin so going to be good. Haven't run here since I did my first MLS event back in the early days. It is a good area with some variation. Bracken is still high and a few of the open areas were rough, particularly number 12 (in the running for roughest control of the year). Ran some controls together, some I shadowed, some I led, some route choices compared, the technical section with short legs ran separately. Felt like I was mainly helping Julian but still got some benefit. Been up for doing some shadowing and coaching anyway.

Gave Julian feedback on reading the map more regularly on paths (so you didn't have to stop at junctions) and checking compass direction at key points. I still thinking I am not using distance enough.

Catch up with Marko
From the sports centre, the other side of the motorway and then back through Lordswood. Most of the paths were pretty good for running as a pair. Delayed by 2 hours as Mark's electric car hadn't charged! Quite a good loop actually, quiet roads and tracks and not too muddy.

Castle Malwood Night O with Nick
1:15 scale corridor training. Tried to focus a bit on nailing the bearings and think a bit more about distance. A few long bearings I used the bezel and that helped. Didn't always think about distance, a few times said outloud how far something was and a few bits of pacing. Tried to be disciplined if I didn't have a plan/idea what I was doing then to stop. A couple of my issues were from using attackpoints that weren't quite right (notably veg boundaries) and a few of my bearings looking off were deliberate aim offs. 3rd night O practice in a row with Nick. Lots less searching around for depressions this time.

Sports centre, golf course and Lordswood
Thought I would do a small bit of trespass while the golf course was quiet. Turns out a few of the golfers don't care for rules either and quite s few were still out in groups. Would be nice to run around it more, maybe when it is quieter like first thing in the morning. Then cut into the woods for a run around. Felt pretty knackered on some of the hills. Felt like I had nothing to give. Looking at my pace, I don't think I was moving as slow as I thought

Itchen Valley Maprun plus some extra after
Good to get out for the morning and have a run ride. Pretty decent course considering the area. A couple of overgrown controls towards the end which weren't that much fun. Poor route choice to control 4, should've dropped to the main path instead of going straight through the wood. A bit slippy in places and my breathing felt quite tight.

Greenways in the fading light
Probably should wear high vis head torch for these runs. I could feel my left knee a bit before hand. Pretty slippy going out left on the Greenways. Enjoying recently that I am able to go out and do something if I want to

Morning cycle into the Forest with Nicole
Started in the dark and it was starting to get light just after Totton. Fortunately didn't need lights to see. Sunrise wasn't as good as we hoped and cloudy to start with. Cleared up a bit by the end. Route in general was a bit busier than we would have liked, especially going out via Totton and then the section along the main road at Ashurst. Fun to get out properly before work though.

Acres Down Night O with Nick
First couple of controls we did some searching around and couldn't find the feature. I led one of the controls on the hill, got to the top of the hill fine and then completely missed and overshot my attackpoint. Returned and found it a bit hesintatly, glad I did because I then nailed the control and it was pretty small! In general it is very easy to just run in a direction and not take it as steady as you should at night. Or improve running on a bearing!

Compton to Olivers Battery, Yew Hill and almost Silkstead out and back then loop
Went for a walk around Bushfield Camp and St Cross with Dad. Had been unsure if I fancied going for a run but had my kit. Hips felt achey and never fun in boots. Decided as it was nice I should try to get out for 30 mins or so. Spotted a nice bit of woods with some ups and downs then a loop up to Olivers Battery. Very muddy in places and a bit slippy. Still need to find some suitable shoes for this. Saw a turning and decided it wasn't the right one so I kept going and thought I'd take the next left, no left turnings appeared and I thought I was running towards Hursley. I eventually decided that I didn't think I'd find the path back okay and it would get too long so I bailed and turned round. Turns out I was only 100m short and could've easily made a loop...

Day off no holidays allowed cycle ride
Taking in a load of new roads down through Hythe and Fawley to Calshot, then round to Lepe and Beaulieu. Stop for a sausage sandwich and some cake, then back up to Eling and home. Felt like I was flagging after Lepe so Nicole took the lead for a bit, after refueling (only had a pitta and cereal bar by 2o'clock ish) I felt great and powered back across the Forest. A bit disappointing my poor map memory meant I had to check the phone in Hythe...

Night O with Nick on Acres Down
Using a combination of 2 courses from the 2017 Classic. Mostly pretty good, need to practice reading the map more regularly while moving, more stable compass direction and maybe distance judgement/pacing. Pretty wet under foot in places but a good post work adventure.

Westwood and the Weston shore with Marko
Good to run somewhere new and meet up with my 1 allowed person. Had run round Westwood for a summer series 5 years ago. Quite a big area of park and woods, would be pretty decent for a night league. Then out and back on the shore which was pretty busy!

Cycling 1:42:40 [3] 39.79 km (2:35 / km)

Cycle with Nicole
Out via Totton to the Forest, new road from under the M27 up towards Bramshaw then back through Half Moon Common, Romsey and Lee Lane.

Getting over the Redbridge roundabout and bridge was pretty horrendous on a road bike. Temporary diversion and road works weren't great so I changed the route on the fly and changed it come back via Lee Lane. The new road out to Bramshaw was good and felt like a really hidden area (longer than I expected too, but faster when we got to the main roads). Felt quite good cycling down Lee Lane as we hadn't cycled as far and so weren't flagging.

Nice to run as a group and get a run pre work in the Forest. Been meaning to get out myself since the clocks changed. Felt fairly good running. Started in base layer and gloves but by the end was warm enough. A lovely morning run.

Orienteering race 1:04:33 [4] 8.79 km (7:21 / km)

Anderwood Blue
Plan was to really savour each control as it would likely be the last proper orienteering for a while.

1. A bit hesitant, knew someone would be 1min down and the reentrant was quite vauge. Control lower than expected
Going pretty well, ran with 2 Stags for a bit which was great. Really felt like I was going nicely.
6. + 15s milling around a bit in the ditches and bracken. Probably should've use the ride/open as an attackpoint
10. Lost 1:09. Drifted a bit right and got confused by the open areas (thought it was a path ahead) and slightly offput by the proximity of the car park. Tried to relocate quickly
12. Probably should've gone for path route. Went direct and it was a bit rough. Then just couldn't find the control (at least 11 mins searching), potentially needed a bit attackpoint and plan going in. Then I relocated and attacked 4 more times in different ways. Ended up giving up. The only angle I didn't attack from I could've found it...
16. Poor route choice +1:27, should've stuck to path and execution. I decided to cut the corner and ended up in massive tussocks and decided going straight was the best.
F. Lost 2:50. Got dragged round the control site and then didn't take a bearing out to the path. Got to a ride and thought it was mapped weirdly but again didn't use the compass. Just lost concenttratiom and was thinking of the end.
