Running warm up/down 26:24 [2] 3.07 mi (8:36 / mi)
shoes: Black Asics Gel-Excite 4

Easy shake out run. I'm still very sore from my race Saturday, so I wanted to take it easy. Lots of rolling has been happening too for my calves and shins.

Other (Broomball) 20:00 [2]

Very sore from my races, so I wasn't much help to my team in this intramural broomball game. We lost 5-2, but it was against real hockey players, so they were much more comfortable on the ice.

Running warm up/down 15:34 [2] 1.85 mi (8:25 / mi)
shoes: Black Asics Gel-Excite 4

Warming up! Super nervous for my first race in forever. I kept jumping, then flinching when the gun went off.

Running race 5:56 [5] 1.6 km (3:42 / km)

I don't remember my splits for this, but they started out too fast, slowed down considerably, then probably picked back up with my kick at the end. I passed 4 girls on my kick, so I should have pushed myself harder earlier.

That being said, this was my first race in a long long time, so I'm satisfied with it. I have something to work towards.

Running warm up/down 9:09 [2] 1.0 mi (9:09 / mi)
shoes: Black Asics Gel-Excite 4

Cooling down with Dylan after he came to watch me race
3 PM

Running warm up/down 6:06 [2] 0.64 mi (9:32 / mi)
shoes: Black Asics Gel-Excite 4

Short lil warm upppp

Running race 2:42 [5] 0.8 km (3:22 / km)

800m race. I think this race went better than the 1600m. I was a lot less nervous since I had one race under my belt already. I'm not entirely sure what my time was, but I think close to 2:42.

Running warm up/down 13:55 [2] 1.55 mi (8:59 / mi)
shoes: Black Asics Gel-Excite 4

Final cool down
7 PM

Soccer 30:00 [3]

Final intramural soccer game. Tied 0-0, and it was a really good game. We didn't play frantically at all (which we often do).

Running 36:42 [3] 4.5 mi (8:09 / mi)
shoes: Black Asics Gel-Excite 4

Shake out run along the southwest corridor park.

This week has been super busy with classes starting to wrap things up before midterms. I have two midterms next week too, so I probably won't have any more time next week :(
4 PM

Other 1:30:00 [2]

Ending the week by enjoying the afternoon sunshine with some pick up football and soccer at the field a few blocks away
10 PM

Soccer 30:00 [3]

Intramural soccer game, tough loss, 2-1.

Running intervals 37:18 [5] 3.92 mi (9:31 / mi)
ahr:173 max:198 shoes: Black Asics Gel-Excite 4

The workout was supposed to be 3x or 4x mile repeats, but when the option was offered for a 2x 800m, 4x 400m, 2x 800m, I opted for that. The shorter, speedier stuff will be more helpful for my race on Saturday.

Unfortunately, I did a poor job of pacing myself through the workout. I had to take a break before the last 400, so I chose to cut the last two 800's down to one 800 and some strides. But in my 800 I absolutely hit a wall not quite 500m in. I stopped there because there was no point to continuing through at such a slow pace and dying while doing it. After a few recovery laps, I did 2 laps of strides on the straightaways.

Splits:
800m - 3:01, 3:01
400m - 84, 86, 89, 85
800m attempt - 1:49 at speed

Takeaways:
1. Although I'm not super duper slow, I can't sustain these paces for that long. I think it would have been better to go for 3:05 800's and 88 400's. Having a race under my belt will help give me a better idea of what times to shoot for in my intervals.
2. I need to make sure I'm getting the right amount of food. My eating schedule has been somewhat all over the place, and I definitely did not get enough sustenance today before the workout.
3. I need to keep an eye on my L hip. It's been hurting since Sunday's broomball game. Although I don't think it's anything serious, the workout definitely aggravated it, so it'd be smart to pay attention to it.

Running warm up/down 7:07 [2] 0.68 mi (10:28 / mi)
ahr:158 max:168 shoes: Black Asics Gel-Excite 4

Running back to my building
9 PM

Other (Football) 20:00 [2]

Intramural flag football game. I exceeded my own expectations! I scored my team's first touchdown, intercepted a throw that would have resulted in a touchdown for the other team (and blocked another one!), got flags off of 2 people, and accidentally bodied my own teammate to the ground. Fun times all around, and pretty low key since I was only on the field half the time.

Orienteering 20:39 [2] 1.46 mi (14:09 / mi)
shoes: Black Asics Gel-Excite 4

Helping out with the Navigation Games training at the Fells! The first exercise was a navigationally-simple warm up.

I should have brought my o-shoes with me; running in the snow with my trainers was slippery.

Armchair Orienteering 15:00 [0]

2nd exercise was going over keeping the map oriented and making a plan for how to get to various controls. I worked with two of the kids and after turning to correctly orient ourselves and our maps, we discussed route choices.

Orienteering 31:06 [2] 1.77 mi (17:34 / mi)
shoes: Black Asics Gel-Excite 4

Final exercise was an almost-relocation exercise for the kids. I led two of them, and they followed along on their maps, trying to keep track of where we were at all times. They were doing well with that, so towards the end I modified it so that we were stopping at less-obvious features, and not always trail intersections.
9 PM

Other (Broomball) 30:00 [3]

Broomball game! The other team actually showed up this time, so we had a legit game and it was intense. We won 3-1, I scored, and I fell too many times to count. I have nice lumps on both my knees from landing on the ice, and a tender bruise on my hand from someone else's stick.

For those who need reassurance that this is indeed a sport, please reference the following: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkeqde4Im5o

(It should also help clarify how easy it is to fall.)

Feeling A LOT better by mid-afternoon, so I took a shake out run to BU, along the river

Note
(sick)

Been drinking fluids, taking vitamins, but I'm not feeling too hot.

Note
(sick)

I've been on-and-off sick for a while now, and it's no fun. It hasn't been anything serious, just a cold, but some days even colds can make you feel gross. I'm going to focus on drinking lots of fluids because it's something I'm not great at and I know it will help.

Did a beginner ballroom dancing lesson and I felt pretty wiped out from it, so taking the rest of the day off.

Running 45:24 [3] 5.36 mi (8:28 / mi)
ahr:166 max:183 shoes: Black Asics Gel-Excite 4

BU bridge. An old neighbor from back home who goes to MIT shouted hi as I went past, but I couldn't stop to chat because I don't know the runs well enough yet.

Other (Basketball) 30:00 [3]

Barely made it to the game on time after my run, so I didn't get in any basketball-related warmup. That was a problem. I think this was one of my worst games so far, and that's saying something. Still fun though!

Running intervals 34:50 [5] 3.35 mi (10:24 / mi)
ahr:157 max:190 shoes: Black Asics Gel-Excite 4

Warmup, 6x 400m intervals (my favorite!!), cool down. The overall time includes some waiting before each interval.

We did these as relay intervals, so the rest between 400s was two other people running their 400. Running alone wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. I was aiming for 90's. It was easier than I expected, so I think the longer rest definitely helped. By the last two intervals I was feeling my legs from the strength workout yesterday.

Splits: 90, 88, 89, 90, 87, 88

Monday Feb 13, 2017 #

9 PM

Strength 1:00:00 [3]

Leg strength:
Foam rolling
Core warmup
3x8 Romanian deadlift
3x8 dead bugs
3x8ea reverse lunges
3x12tot mtn. climbers
3x8 goblet squat
3x8 glute bridge

3x10 45-degree lower back hyper extension for good measure. I think the emphasis on form and core strength has also been helping with my back, but I figured this added on would be good.

Running 10:00 [3]
shoes: Black Asics Gel-Excite 4

I could not get myself to run on the treadmill. I think trying to run right after doing a leg strength workout was also part of the mistake.

Other (Broomball) 30:00 [3]

Intramural broomball! So so so much fun!! The other team didn't show, so we just played ourselves the whole time which was nice. It was really tricky trying to figure out how to move on the ice and avoid slipping with shoes on

Running 19:00 [2] 2.0 mi (9:30 / mi)

Little run. Felt good to be getting back into it.

Note

Been sick all week. I was a little sick before hiking, but thought it was minor and wouldn't turn into anything. I was wrong, and hiking in the cold definitely triggered it. I'm starting to feel better, and planning on a short run this evening and maybe a quick gym session.
