EYOC Sprint - Tsaravets Fortress
GPS Tracking /
Results18th, 16th European.
Very cool area but very hard to orienteer, let alone race in. Anway will just describe the race and thoughts after.
On the way there we realised that we had planned perfectly where the start/ arena/ final loop was which was a nice confidence booster.
Quarantine was on an astro turf, fine no dramas there. A bit of a faff getting the gps vests and units set up but it was all sorted soon enough, and with plenty of time to get ready and WU. Warming up, legs felt very weird, almost too energetic but guess thats due to the massively reduced training load this week. Into -7, short jog up to the boxes, a few strides and then into the boxes ready to go.
I wasn't too nervous on the start line just anxious to get going, but this had to be supressed due to the very complex nature at the begginning of the course.
Starting I made sure to jog off the line, find the start on the map and work out what was going on, this was probs a good plan as the kite was 10m from the boxes and then the first control was about 30m away. Good, stable start, had sorted #2 knew where I needed to go to hit the entrance to the compound, it just looked a little wierd once there, a well no bother. #3 was my mistake, ploughed straight but forgot about the wall so had to stop, read and then boost to the crossing point. Damn, geeking should have sorted me out there. Ah well only ~10s lost.
#4, 5, 6, 7 all fine, not running fast just fairly smooth and ran okay up the hill. #8 had a little miss and probs not the best route but fine in reality. #9 was bad, I was just trying to use all the wrong features to navigate off, like steps and fences when in reality I should have walked this leg on google street view and know that I just had to boost downhill to the big bell thingy and then in. I just kept stopping and making sure I wasn't crossing anything then was surprised when I hit the bell. Ah well I guess that is just lack of prep and sprint technique.
#10 was fine but I was unsure it was mine so hesitated there to make sure, then the long drag down to spec.
We had talked through this as a team and I knew that I was just purely gonna try to plan the last section in this dead running time. I think I planned three control of it, one of which I won the split; time well spent.
The last section was good, probs just didn't run fast enough but I had geeked it well so no problems really.
Into the finish was probably the only chance I had to actually run properly. Then once finished I was bombarded by officials to get my gps stuff back.
A bit dissapointed at the finish with the result but I think that was the best I coukd have hoped for with my current sprinting ability. Anyway was cheered up by Megans domination of the W16s which was one of the highlights of the weekend :)
If I'm honest I think I just need to do more sprints so I can run more aggressively. Geeking was good but there is always more I could have done.
