WSOC model some really grim sections and bad/nonexistent mapping but there were few nice bits on the tiny map. Hopefully they are just saving the good stuff for tomorrow.

Hitting up siders with Kit, pretty messy at the start but got some clean ones off the groynes at the end. Only short seeing as it was pretty late in the day.

JK - Day 3 - 2nd

The stress levels were pretty high even before starting knowing I had to do well to stand a chance at selection. This was combined with the knowledge that there were some really strong M20’s stacked up behind me and nobody I could really use. Straight out the start box and the pressure already cracked me as I struggled with the 1:15 scale causing a needles parallel. After that I sprinted through the timed out crossing in full paranoia mode. Was then clean through the mid section of the map before some solid traffic lighting in the green section. Coming out of c15 i chose to run/walk a solid 200m through the fight before hitting the road then just pathing it the rest of the way. I then accidentally hit the road to early on the way to c17 and didn’t want to add the extra time of diverting for a drink. The rest of the run was uneventful apart from a stupid 1min mistake at c20 then a little one at c21 (rage/confusion). All round not the run i wanted but hopefully it’s good enough for selection.

JK - Day 2 - 3rd

Disappointing from the start where immediately got completely disorientated loosing so much time. This set the mood for the rest of the race which consisted of poor rc and bad exit direction. luckily only 1 min down on Pete so its all to play for tomorrow.

JK - Day 1 - 3rd

No thrills today just got round mistake free which is always satisfying. Looking back on this i definitely took way too long to get into the map which made me keep hesitating and loosing seconds that woould prove valuable later on. Then in the last section i accidentally ran past one of the controls coz i was to busy planning ahead then just hit a bit of a wall and my legs stopped being in sprint mode (should have eaten more). hopefully i have got my head in gear for tomorrow. Still happy with the result as it takes some pressure off so i can enjoy some quality orienteering.

The flight home was delayed 4 hours and combined with the early start meant this run was pure pain. I was running down the hills way slower than up but still nice to get out.

Note

Off to Naples so not sure if i'll run for a couple of days
9 AM

Running (ROAD) 26:02 intensity: (19 @1) + (3:46 @2) + (21:40 @3) + (17 @4) 5.05 km (5:09 / km) +191m 4:20 / km

ahr:139 max:162 shoes: Brooks Mazama

Couldn't resist orienteering after watching JWOC 2017. Unfortunately there is no Finnish terrain within running distance so I had to settle for the world renowned Fire Beacon. Tbf I was naving well and felt comfortable in the terrain despite wearing trail shoes.

Running (ROAD) 27:06 intensity: (11:51 @2) + (15:15 @3) 5.9 km (4:36 / km) +38m 4:27 / km

Rolling/Stretching 20:00 [1]

Combined with this morning
9 AM

Running (ROAD) warm up/down 4:55 intensity: (48 @2) + (4:07 @3) 1.01 km (4:51 / km) +13m 4:34 / km
ahr:144 max:153 shoes: Salming Speed 1

Getting the HRM working

Running (ROAD) tempo 37:41 intensity: (2:56 @1) + (55 @2) + (6:04 @3) + (27:26 @4) + (20 @5) 10.03 km (3:45 / km) +64m 3:38 / km
ahr:162 max:180 shoes: Salming Speed 1

True fans of the account will remember the 'Easy tempo' well this is one of them. Keeping the HR steady for most of it but a few windy/undulating sections didn't help the consistency. Also got the satisfaction of dropping a group of cyclists on a steep riser.

Running (ROAD) warm up/down 6:19 intensity: (43 @2) + (5:35 @3) + (1 @4) 1.25 km (5:04 / km) +27m 4:34 / km
ahr:151 max:165 shoes: Salming Speed 1

7 PM

Running (TRAIL) 33:49 [2] 5.49 km (6:10 / km) +60m 5:51 / km

ahr:139 max:163 shoes: Brooks Mazama

Went straight out after getting home from a walk so the legs weren't the lightest. However, running along east hill whilst the sun was setting made the grind worth it.

Easy on the descents and flat sections but pushed on the climbs and muddy bits. Ended up running back the faster way (road) because my hands froze in a hail storm but for the majority of the run it was sunny.
