Accidents Happen: http://globalnews.ca/news/3723788/stawamus-chief-i... & http://bc.ctvnews.ca/rock-climber-tumbles-15-metre...

I drove up to Squamish last night to pick up Franz after his climbing partner fell while an arm's length from finishing the stage. Both pieces the climber had put in ripped out and he went over the ledge the rope scraping so hard against the face that it shredded down to the core. Without a bolted anchor for Franz on belay, it could have been two climbers over the ledge. This was the only stage that Franz didn't lead.

For all that goes wrong, it's also important to look at what went right. Franz was properly secured and responded well when his partner fell, there was cell reception, thanks to the terrible smokey conditions SAR was able to get the helicopter in close, and Franz was able to get some help from two other climbers. Importantly, they had voice contact with his partner though they were unable to reach him. The hospital said last night that so far he is doing okay.

Unfortunately, they lost the bag with wallets, car keys, and shoes into the gully. So while the rescue went well the fall out effects are complicated.

All climbers I know - STAY SAFE!!
