Note

Have been really sick since Wednesday. The overnight flight Friday and luggage stress has probably worsened things. Being sick in the summer heat really sucks too. Feeling a bit better today, so will at least get to the gym tomorrow.

Ran on an old lava field map just outside Reykjavik that I had seen on WorldofO last year. Was really tricky, with a ton of detail, and was really treacherous running too.

There were a ton of birds squawking about for most of it, and I noticed a lot of seagulls as I ran the last small loop I set. Was enjoying some faster running along a flattish ridge when I felt like the squawking was getting louder, and the gulls a little closer overhead. In no time I was getting swooped one after the other, so I turned on a dime and started sprinting the opposite direction towards the car. It was scary, I was freaking out, but luckily they didn't actually hit me. Had an arm waving above my head trying to fend them off though until they let up after a few hundred meters. Will also mention that the seagulls in Iceland seem bigger than normal...

Anyways I made it back alive, but I'll have nightmares about seagulls now. Vid was surprised that it had never happened to me before, since I guess he's been used to dealing with it while egg hunting!

WOC Relay

A solid run but some dumb mistakes.

A minute lost to 2. Was right on line to nail it but things didn't match up going in and I stopped too early. 30s lost on tricky 8. Most frustratingly 1.5min on 10 by not reading my descriptions. Was scratching my head below the cliff when it was really at the top on the north side of the knoll. Was fun nailing the second last control at full speed though and battling it out with Portugal and Poland into the changeover.

Started out really well and was within qualifying by the spectator control. Took a bad route to 9 though, and the long road run killed me. Was dead in the last half and it slipped away. Maybe started out too fast, maybe too tired from the long...

Note

A bit of a scare when I woke up this morning, part of my silicon ear plug got stuck in my left ear when I took them out. Was half deaf all morning. Got Eric to try and get it out with tweezers but he couldn't get it. Took a while to figure out who to talk to from the organizers but we ended up just driving down to the health center. The nurses were super nice and I got in within 5 minutes. They said they would try and flush it out with a syringe, and it worked! It turns out that it was just a whole bunch of my own wax buildup (and maybe some silicon) that was plugged. So while they were at it they cleaned out my right ear. Didn't have to see a doctor so didn't have to pay. The funny thing is that she said she has eight(!) other appointments for the same ear cleaning today. :)

So it turned out to be a complete rest day rather than a short easy training, but I'm quite ok with that. Model events tomorrow and Saturday await.
