Ski Orienteering 2:14:50 [4] 27.0 km (5:00 / km)

Tough race today. Made a dumb route choice on the start of the second map and lost lots of time. Head wasnt really in it today, and didnt feel too quick.

I think 35th or so was possible today, oh well. Doing the first leg of the relay tomorrow which should be interesting. Legs are extremely tired at the moment.

Just some easy skiing around today, model event tracks are quite slow and wind-blown. cut throughs will not be possible today. It is at least a bit of a nicer day today, although still very windy.

The tracks for the sprint relay should be nicely groomed. Will be cheering on the NZ, and US teams from the sidelines.

Ski Orienteering 54:47 [4]

This has been my first internet time since I've been here. No internet at our accomodations. Staying with two NZers about 20min from the event center.

Another solid race today, but still room for improvement. Made a 1min+ mistake to #7 by reading from 2 to 3 by accident. Also took some bad routechoices.

Was really hard in places to see the trails, and did quite a bit of cutting through to the major features.

Acheivement of the day is that nobody passed me today, and came into the finish with my name being called. :P

Ski Orienteering 24:30 [3]

First international SKi-O race. A bit of a learning experience, but happy with the result, first North American!

Didnt really make any mistakes but was quite slow in places. Some of the downhills were quite scary, especially after having taken a major fall after #2 and breaking a snap on my map board.

Was the last non-Red Group starter today, so got passed by about 5 fast guys. Could stay with them for a while but would lose them on the narrow tracks. I would look down to check my map and in that time they would be around the next corner and out of my view. The speed at which they go on the narrow tracks and the fluidness of their navigation is quite impressive. So still a lot to learn...

shoes: Asics GT2150 (Feb 11)

Fun but tough training running in the snow. Slipped on some ice during the warmup and landed hard on my hip. Somehow though its my ankle that is worse off. Not a good feeling that my ankles are getting messed up before the season has even begun.

Got through the training ok but it stiffened up a lot on the drive home. Now to find my wobbleboard....

12 PM

Skiing race (classic) 41:07 [4] 12.0 km (3:26 / km)

Decided at the last second to do Thea's Race. An annual mass start classic race on narrow hilly trails. Haven't been training at all for classic, but it was really fun last year and i'd done really well so decided to go for it. Thought that it would be good 'race training' as well.

So my first ski race of the year, and probably only my 5th or so classic ski. Just wanted to go hard and have fun.

Started way back in the mass start but after 1km I found the pace was too easy so I kicked it up a notch. Got stuck in no-mans-land for a while but was able to catch up with the trailing pack of Nansen Murray and two Nakkertok guys by the end of the first lap (3x 4km loop). On the last downhill into the arena Riel fell and I tripped over his ski face first into the powder. Got up pretty quickly but lost time to Dominique and Nansen. Nansen attacked shortly after and got way ahead at this point. Passed Dominique part way through the 2nd loop, but couldn't reel in Nansen. Skied on my own for the rest of the race. Didn't go too hard on the third loop, I knew that I couldn't catch Nansen and I knew nobody was going to catch me.

Really surprised myself with how it went. Ended up in 4th place overall out of 37, and 4th senior. Matthias and Steffan Loyd were skiing in the lead together the whole time.

Beat Lee and Logan (XC Ottawa) and lots of other good skiers, so really happy.
