Skiing warm up/down (classic) 50:00 [1]

12 PM

Skiing race (classic) 41:07 [4] 12.0 km (3:26 / km)

Decided at the last second to do Thea's Race. An annual mass start classic race on narrow hilly trails. Haven't been training at all for classic, but it was really fun last year and i'd done really well so decided to go for it. Thought that it would be good 'race training' as well.

So my first ski race of the year, and probably only my 5th or so classic ski. Just wanted to go hard and have fun.

Started way back in the mass start but after 1km I found the pace was too easy so I kicked it up a notch. Got stuck in no-mans-land for a while but was able to catch up with the trailing pack of Nansen Murray and two Nakkertok guys by the end of the first lap (3x 4km loop). On the last downhill into the arena Riel fell and I tripped over his ski face first into the powder. Got up pretty quickly but lost time to Dominique and Nansen. Nansen attacked shortly after and got way ahead at this point. Passed Dominique part way through the 2nd loop, but couldn't reel in Nansen. Skied on my own for the rest of the race. Didn't go too hard on the third loop, I knew that I couldn't catch Nansen and I knew nobody was going to catch me.

Really surprised myself with how it went. Ended up in 4th place overall out of 37, and 4th senior. Matthias and Steffan Loyd were skiing in the lead together the whole time.

Beat Lee and Logan (XC Ottawa) and lots of other good skiers, so really happy.
