Run race (Coastal High 50) 5:22:00 [5] 50.14 km (6:25 / km) +1749m 5:28 / km
shoes: Asics Kayano 24

Very early 3am wake-up to drive to finish then get a bus to the start so only about 4-5 hours sleep, same as the night before due to Archie having an off night.

Started off in a lead pack of 15 but as soon as we hit the single trail backed off a little has had trouble stretching out due to niggling hip injury. I had been to the physio twice in the last month to work on what turns out to be the top of my ITB (can’t remember the name) and the problem would go away for a day or two but always returned. Anyway didn’t mind too much as it was still ok running at a slower pace meaning I could conserve energy for the much tougher second half. About 10km in one of my water bottle burst so lost 500ml. Didn’t think much of it at the time.

The first 25km was really nice technical single trail from Lamington National Park and got to CP1 in 16th place feeling pretty good. The next 4km or so was a steep downhill which my quads did not like at all and then pushed on to CP2 at 33km in about 14th place. In hindsight, I should have stopped and re-fuelled for much longer.

Started the undulating next section through Numinbah Valley feeling ok, but quickly got dehydrated and really struggled by the time I got to Apple Tree Park Stairs. My original plan was to conserve energy to this point and finish strong on the hills but that all backfired when I got dehydrated and eventually started cramping on the steeper climbs. I even packed some chips to prevent cramp but was so thirsty I didn’t touch them. Still must have been going ok as I passed 6 others also suffering from the same thing.

Finally got to CP3 at 43km in 8th and spent a good 2-3 minutes there trying to rehydrate. Then struggled home getting passed on the long downhill into Springbrook National Park and walked most of the long climb out to finish in 9th.

Put this one down to poor race management and got too far into deficit zone. Lesson learned. Also need to do more downhill work and somehow sort my hip out.

Purposely didn’t enter any other marathons or Ultra’s till after this one to see if I had the motivation to do another this year, after going back-to-back months with Rainbow Beach Marathon. Immediately after the race was a definite No to pick myself up and start the training again for another. A few days later now, it’s a maybe.
