Run race (Coastal Classic) 2:54:51 [5] 29.8 km (5:52 / km) +500m 5:25 / km

Prep for the race didn’t go too well. Didn’t feel great the day before and then it was a mission to get to the start line. I got up at 5am because there was trackwork on the south line where the start was located so buses were to replace trains. Problem was that the organisers must have forgotten to tell Sydney Trains as there weren’t enough buses for the 600 runners. I ended up driving to Sutherland arriving at 6.20am and my bus didn’t get to Otford till 8am, only half an hour before the start. Just time enough to register, go to the toilet and a 2 min warm up with no stretching.

The race was going ok for the first section down Burning Palms where I hit the first drinks station at 53 min. Then at about 15km I face planted leading a group of runners. I couldn’t feel my shoulder and all I could think of was my nasty arm injury from last year. Luckily, after a 30 sec break it turned ok and was just a bit shaken up. I lost the group but eventually caught them all up 2km later. But I was really then starting to fade, the 30 degree heat was getting to me and I just got slower and slower. The last 8km was a real effort to finish down in 17th place, over 20 min down on what I was hoping. So disappointed with the result and how I felt. I felt so much better last weekend so don’t know what went wrong today. The majority of the field were quite a bit slower than last year due to the heat but I’m normally ok with the heat.

Great race by Tom Do Canto who for a road runner smashed a technical course. Rob Walt also had a good race for 2nd in 2.24.

Same session as last Wed with 8 x 1 km reps, this time with 90 secs recovery to save myself for the weekend.
Start from World Square with Ondrej, Halvor Eid Nielsen from Norway and Mat McGuire around the wharves at Pyrmont through to under the Harbour Bridge. Felt much more comfortable last week for the same pace.
Further warm down from North Sydney to Crows Nest.
