Run race (Lavaredo Ultra Trail) 6:14:35 [5] 49.81 km (7:31 / km) +2399m 6:04 / km
shoes: Asics Kayano 24

Not a great start to the day having to stuff around with rego after missing it yesterday. Ended up doing about 5km before the start to/from rego and hotel. Then after all that started right up the back of the 1671 field. Admittedly wasn't in the mood for all this after all the lead up.

It took about 2-3 minutes just to cross the start line then a slow pace weaving in and out of runners for the first 2km along the road. The first incline on trails was very slow and everyone else was walking and slowing down to get out their poles.

After about 5km I was in the relative clear passing a runner every few minutes up to the first CP at 17km generally uphill in around 300th place. Generally taking it easy but also short on breath in the thin air.

The 2nd CP at 24km was steeper uphill through the pass with some snow covered sections as I jumped up 117th place. It was also easier to pass runners as most didn't have poles closer to the front. It was starting to hotter around 30 degrees and I was starting to feel good at around 30km and got to the 4th CP at 40km in 81st place and ran solidly all the way to the finish in 74th.

Disappointed for the weekend to turn out like it did. I didn't feel great for the first half. Not sure if that was the lead up, lack of food or fitness or altitude. Had to ration my 2 gels for the entire 6hrs which wasn't ideal. The stations did have some food, but pretty much just nuts and fruit which I tried to stock up on but eating dry nuts on a hot day wasn't great.

Note
(rest day)

Would have liked to do a small run around the mountains as I was supposed to get to Cortina midday but EasyJet screwed me over.

Got up early for my flight from Gatwick only to be bumped off due to overselling it. I didnt know they purposely overbook flights and rely on no shows. So was told at the gate no available flights till tomorrow arvo (after Lavaredo). Then I tried to find the exit back through customs which isnt easy, so eventually asked customer service how to get out the airport. They asked me why and I said my flight was full and so were the next 4. She said that wasnt true, so instead of trying to get on the available BA flight I waited 4 hrs till the Easyjet flight. Turned out it was overbooked as well and I was bumped again. Along with about 15 others. I argued quite a lot and the staff walked onboard asking if anyone wanted £500 to get on a flight tomorrow. They got 2 takers and I was one of the lucky 15 to get on.

Got to Venice Airport 5hrs after expected and had to wait nearly 2hrs in the queue for a hire in near 40 degree heat. Ended up getting to Cortina well into the evening missing rego and all the shops were closed so I have no food for tomorrows race. Further, one of my water bottles broke so Ill have limited water running in 30 degree weather.

Hardly eaten anything all day and most restaurants were booked out so I was limited to a burger and a slice of pizza to carb load.

Fair to say tomorrow is gonna hurt. Will have to take it easy to ration lack of food and water. And 4km or so prior stuffing around with rego.

Orienteering race (Mole Valley Club Event) 48:53 [5] *** 8.44 km (5:48 / km) +64m 5:35 / km
spiked:22/27c shoes: Altra Lone Peak 3.5

Shocker of a run. Odds and Evens Score again. Actually planned maybe the optimum route but lost time on the first 3 controls scratching around in the circle in the dark green then missed a control in the corner of the map so backtracked to get it (5 min), then completely missed a control in the middle of the map which would have taken 2 min to get. Ended up 11 min early.

Orienteering race (England) 50:48 [5] *** 11.44 km (4:26 / km) +95m 4:16 / km
spiked:21/24c shoes: Asics Kayano 24

Urban city race around Thornbury. A few misses including bad route to #1 (1 min), just following everyone else that went that way before me, then didn't read ahead at #9 and got stuck behind green (1 min), and the last (30 secs) lost contact near the circle and looked the wrong place. Finished 6th but waay behind Owain Jones who did under 4 min/km for the 11km.

Orienteering race (England) 16:18 [5] *** 3.27 km (4:59 / km) +39m 4:42 / km
spiked:13/17c shoes: Altra Lone Peak 3.5

Fast open sprint with small patches of slower bush. Tried to go too fast and completely missed #7 which the line from #6 went right through the circle of #8. Oh well, a good hit out.

Odds and Evens Score Event in Nonsuch Park, where you had to get as many odd or even controls as possible and then switch over once within the hour. Didn't expect the changeover to be so easy as most the evens were on one side of the map and the odds on the other. So should have planned a bit better having to backtrack to one even control back towards the start. Couldn't find any speed on a cold and wet evening through long grass. And made one silly error towards the finish. Got all controls 9 minutes under.
