Orienteering race (Sydney Summer Series #22) 48:56 [5] *** 9.37 km (5:13 / km) +213m 4:41 / km
spiked:20/27c shoes: Brooks Adrenaline ASR

Hamstring, particularly left one, was really sore in the warm up. It took a good km to warm up in the run starting with all the bush controls in the south. Got them all cleanly but towards the end of that section it started pouring and I didn't have a map bag. Ended up accidentally missing no.2 trying to preserve my map then as I got into the streets it was so heavy that my map was falling apart. I then folded it up real small and just memorised legs. At each control I would lose 5-10 secs trying to memorise and refold my map. I ended up missing the turnoff losing a minute at no.29 as Mark Schaefer overtook me. I caught him back up through the last few controls and he led me in the last bits which I could hardly make out. Got all controls except 9, 8 and 2 for top score on 530 points which was lucky. With no rain I should have been able to get 580 points.

Orienteering race (National League) 22:07 [5]
shoes: Asics Kayano 19

National League Final on Kelvin Grove. Started as last place in the B final. Got confused going to no.2 and didn't realise I had to climb up 4 flights on stairs within scaffolding to get to the upper level. It wasn't correctly mapped either. So lost a minute going to no.2. After that was all good till I caught 2 min on Andrew Morris at no.14 then stupidly lost concentration and ran to no.16 skipping 15. By the time I worked it all out I had already lost well over 5 minutes so skipped the last few controls. Disappointing end to the the National Leagues in Brisbane.

Sprint on Cumberland Hospital. Felt pretty good and had a pretty clean run. Just a number of 5 sec errors. Finished in 18.27, 30 secs behind Adam Potter.

Orienteering race (National League) 16:01 [5]
shoes: Asics Kayano 19

2nd Leg of team with Brooner. After a good run he came in 9th. I couldn't get a good flow and lost 45 secs on one control near the end. Picked up 1 place.

Orienteering race (National League) 15:39 [5]
shoes: Asics Kayano 19

4th and final leg. Another solid run by Brooner. I had a better run than my first leg. It also helped going round the small map a second time. Picked up another place to finish 7th.

NSW Stingers finished 4th, 6th, 7th.

2 PM

Orienteering race (National League) 20:13 [5]
shoes: Asics Kayano 19

Griffith University (Brisbane)

Technical course. Lost time on no.18 and 19 near the end plus could have improved on a few route choices. Should have been able to do 1.30 faster.

Came 6th missing A Final by 12 secs.

Orienteering race (Sydney Summer Series #21) 49:48 [5] *** 10.3 km (4:50 / km) +75m 4:40 / km
spiked:29/29c shoes: Asics Kayano 19

Wet course at Roseville Chase. Starting pouring just as I started through the bush controls to the west. Then looped back through all the street controls to the far eastern control and to the finish missing just no.15. Finished 5 min late for 530 points, 10 behind Horrocks.

Hamstrings sore throughout and legs really tired. Thought I'd be further down.

Sprint course at Callan Park. Navigated ok. Little bit tentative in the wet. Hamstrings a bit sore particularly in the warm up. Lost 5 secs a number of times including no.16 and 17 in the fine detail. Finished 2nd in 17.46 but well behind Aidan Dawson-16.52.

Hamstrings felt better than last week but still sore. Didn't pick the best route so could have saved 20 points or so. Finished 30 points behind Glenn Horrocks, and 10 points behind Richard Morris and James McQuillan.

spiked:13/16c shoes: Asics Kayano 19

Ok run. Bit tired. Lost 30 secs on no.12 looking on the wrong staircase, otherwise a couple 5-10 sec errors. Injury not too bad but hard to stretch out. Finished behind Aidan, Josh and Grant Bluett.

Orienteering race (Sydney Summer Series #19) 59:00 [5] *** 9.18 km (6:26 / km) +100m 6:06 / km
spiked:22/29c shoes: Asics Kayano 19

Hard bush course. A lot of controls weren't in the right place, some were well hidden and some with no flags. All these plus a long course made for low scores.

Did a small loop through 2, 14 then lost time on 24 where for some reason the control was in the bush well away from the mapped feature. No. 25 was not in the circle. Then I couldn't find the track up to 19. The few along the MTB tracks were ok but very slow running. Lost time on 18 as I couldn't see the pole in the bush. Then more time lost at 26 which was hidden under a bridge that was only 20cm high. No 20 was a bush control without a flag so it was very difficult to spot the SI unit. Slogged up through the green to 22 and finish 14 min over time for 440 points. 10 points behind Patrik G and Greg Barbour. And probably others still to finish. All up lost about 5 minutes but everyone will have the same problems. Still enjoyed the course though.

Back is better but hamstrings are still very sore. 6FT isn't looking very good at the moment so this may be my 3rd withdrawal in 5 years. My injuries seem to occur in Jan-Feb after a big Summer of training. Might be something to reassess for the future :(
