Orienteering race (Sydney Summer Series) 50:27 [5] *** 9.08 km (5:33 / km) +123m 5:12 / km
spiked:21/26c shoes: Brooks Trance 10

O on The Clay Pan. Wasn't expecting this. It was a bush event and not only was the bush on the map, the controls were places well off the tracks so legs got pretty scratched up. Had a terrible run but somehow was only 10 points off the leaders Mike Burton and Patrik Gunnarsson.

Started off with no.2, 21, 12 then a bush bash through to 25 which took ages through the green. Couldn't get the next no.15 spot on, then went to 21 instead of 7. Next control was no.8 next to the main track but couldn't find it. The next few were very tricky but was ok through 20, 10, 29, 9 , 27, 19 and 30. Then a 300m thick bush leg to 18 but didn't have a compass and ended up overrunning 200m hitting the road. Decided to go back to it so lost 7-8 minutes! Decided to be late after that and collected as many street controls as possible. Reckon I collected more points than points lost for being overtime so was worth it. Finished on 470 points. Without errors should have scored 580 points (9 minutes errors and not finding no.8). Enjoyed the map and course though, will be more prepared next year.

O at Fred Caterson Reserve. Felt flat today after no food from a hard day at work. Didn't take best direct line route choices to no.2 and 5. Overran the track entrance to no.9 and then small time losses through hesitations in the complex track network through 14-18. Again didn't take the best direct line route choices to no.19 and 20. Probably lost 2 minutes but it would have been a hard one to have a clean run. Did 19.47 for 2nd, Patrik Gunnarsson-19.00, Brooner-20.02.

O at Pymble Hill. Not the best area. Pretty much the whole course on the streets. Started north with no.5, 24, 18 and skipping no.14, 1 and 10. Should have left no.21 off and prob would have gained another 10-20 points. Then collected all the controls in the east and did a loop around the south skipping no.27. Feeling a lot better after a couple of easy days. Don't remember the last time I covered this distance in a SSS. Scored 480 for 2nd behind Richard Green on 490. Glenn Horrocks/Brooner-460.

Good fun course at St.Ives Showground. No big time losses but quite a few small ones with the most being 10 secs. Rolled ankle to no.2 ripping through the tape which cushioned the blow (5-7 secs), offline to no.4 running up towards no.16 (10 secs), too low on no.9 (10 secs), offline to no.15 (10 secs) and was stuffing around in the bush at no.17 (10 secs). Forgot my compass which would have accounted for some of these time losses. Looking at the splits all the leaders were up and down. Managed to finish 30 secs ahead of Patrik in 2nd.

Orienteering race (Sydney Summer Series) 42:09 [5] *** 8.42 km (5:00 / km) +85m 4:46 / km

Vineyard Creek. 5th race in 10 days so legs feeling a little tired. Started out west for a couple of controls in the streets then into the bush sections. Stuffed no.30, just couldn't see it at the foot at th cliff. Prob lost a minute. Then a couple of controls later missed the turnoff to no.22 so had to skip it and come back to it later. Ran around the southern loop with no probs then had to collect no.1 and 22 which I missed so wasn't too convenient. Did an out and back to no.4 which wasn't the best route choice. Got all controls in 42.09, Burton-41.53, Horrocks-43.00. Noone else got them all.

Sprint at Macquarie Hospital. Legs feeling really tired from race yesterday so expected to be a bit behind today which wasn't the case. Good little course which required a bit of thought for route choice. Lost bits of time within the circle at no.5 and 6. No other real losses. Possibly should have taken the route choice to the right of building at no.4 instead going left. Brooner got me by 2 seconds.

Run race (Sydney Trail Series) 45:18 [5] 10.2 km (4:26 / km) +178m 4:05 / km
shoes: Brooks Cascadia 2010

Trail race around Manly Dam. 3rd race of the series which is getting really popular with 350 entries. The majority of the course was on single trail which was great. The start was really fast, I was running well out of my comfort zone and all I was trying to do is to hang onto my position in about 15th with Brooner and Perso just behind in single file. By the 5km mark I was really hurting, Brooner had caught me up but he must have been pretty tired too from the frantic pace at the start and didn't pass. From there I got into a rhythm and caught up 5 places to finish in 10th in 45.18. Winner smashed it in 41.05. Good race, will try to go to more of these throughout the year.

For some reason same venue as Monday's Sprint. Good run and good course set in the bush for a change. Basically did 2 loops. First loop starting south through 2, 12, 13, 23, 17, 27, 7, 3, 19, 29, 9 then cutting through the bush and out into the only 2 street controls 11 and 21 then back into the trails for 5, 25 skipping no.1 to 15. Then a second loop through 14, 4 and lost the track 24. Then decided to skip no.6 to 26, 16 cutting through the bush to 28. Read the map wrong to no.8 and lost maybe 30 seconds then collected 18, 10, 30, 20 and then cut straight up through the green to 22 and finish. Bit of a risk as there were no other options if it was not possible. Ended up well ahead on 580 which has been rare this season. Michael Burton-540, Mark Schaefer-510, Richard Green-480, Glenn Horrocks-470.

Orienteering race (Sydney Sprint Series) 15:19 [5] *** 3.49 km (4:23 / km) +80m 3:56 / km
spiked:10/14c shoes: Brooks Cascadia 2008

Sprint at Pennant Hills Park. Fairly easy nav course. Tried to go too fast for this though. Made quite a few stupid little errors not looking at the map enough. Lost time at no.1 not cutting across the courts and through the gap in the fence (10 secs), no.9 should have cut across the oval (10 secs), no.11 overrun (10 secs) and no.12 got confused coming out into the street - needed a compass to confirm (10 secs). Overall maybe 40 seconds. Finished 2nd in 15.19, Greg Barbour-14.56.
