O race (Forest) 53:59 [4]

I always seem to make mistakes round here. There are sections in the middle where things can be a little vague and that’s where I tend to struggle.
And so I’m really annoyed with myself for the time loss to #3. I was a short leg and I just wandered out from #2 and hoped the veg would lead me into #3. A simple glance at my compass would have put me in the right direction for what was a perfectly visible control. Instead, I lost map contact and just stumbled around for a couple of minutes. I wish I could realise when I’m about to do this and force myself to focus. I will try to be self-aware enough for next time. More than 2 mins pointlessly lost.

The rest was pretty clean although I wasn’t running particularly fast. My time loss at #3 allowed Jacob to get past me and I had him leading me into a lot of controls which mostly helps, except where I got ahead of him and then got flustered. In particular the exit from #18 where I panicked and ran off in the wrong direction!

The brambles aren’t too bad at this time of year, so I came off the paths a bit and that mostly paid off apart from exiting #16 where the undergrowth was very thick.

O (Score) 34:28 [4]

Was pleased with how this went. I ran yesterday and it is a 2:30hrs ride up. Seemed to have reasonable pace and was consistent to the end, even if not full on.

HH do an 'honour' system on these races. I had been getting close and making sure I could see the flag as counting as visiting. Then I realised the HH usual suspects were actually touching the control sites, which is fairer, so I started doing that half way round. So maybe was a bit quicker relatively in the first half.

Got the map before the start and planned some of my routes before and so was probably more optimal than if I was deciding on the fly.

Pleased with how I executed, with only getting my feet wet, which I didn't fancy, to improve the route choice!
