Running race (Very Long Half Marathon) 2:26:48 [5] 27.22 km (5:24 / km) +760m 4:44 / km

Arrrrrrrghh this was too far for Mark

Note to self: do not do this again

Furthest I've ever run by about 5k. It did not help that the last 5k included the hill up from the centre of the bath to the university. That hill was the reason I didn't go to Bath uni - because I didn't want to walk up every day. I never imagined I'd have to run it after having run 24k beforehand! Nightmare.

Anyway.

Started pretty well, in the chasing pack but not far down on the front two. Went into the woods after about 2k and got to the front of the chasing pack; made up loads of time on everyone else on the offroad technical descent. But then...strange absence of signs. Got to a road...no signs. Oh dear. Stopped. Joined by another c.10 confused people. Decided to turn round and go back up the hill. Cue an extra 120m unexpected climb, which I ran up, constantly telling the stream of people coming down (and I'm not exaggerating when I say pretty much everyone; it was c.100 people) that this wasn't the right way. Eventually found the sign I'd missed which was pretty much invisible when running down the hill. So an extra 1.2km as well as the climb. Was not in a good mood.

So then had a few km overtaking the (very few; maybe 20?) people who'd gone the right way. Found out afterwards that some people had gone down to the canal and round; this cuts 5k at least off the route so the results are going to be meaningless. But anyway.

Running at a pretty good pace along the canal, stayed with who I thought at the time was the first woman but actually turned out not to be; we were similar on the flat; she'd get away from me by miles up the hills but then she wasn't so good at the offroad downhills so I'd catch her again. That continued until about 20k where we had an onroad downhill where I couldn't catch her.

Happy with my running until the [proper] HM distance, then couldn't handle it and dropped to around 5 min ks along the canal. When the hill back up to the uni steepened about 25k I started walking - and when I say walking, I don't mean the strong confident walking that you do when you just need to get your breath back for a bit - I mean staggering, thinking you're going to faint type of walking. Did that for about a k. I didn't have any choice in the matter.

Managed to jog up the last bit of the hill and along the flat bit to the finish - 7min ks. Just glad to finish alive.

Definitely have found my distance limit which is probably a good thing. Found my hilly half marathon in Cheltenham pretty easy so assumed this would be okay - but it wasn't. The temperature and the massive hills, and the unnecessary additional hill didn't help; but even so I think I'd have struggled. Will stick to HM or less in future!

Running race (Parkrun - Little Stoke) 18:18 [5] 5.0 km (3:40 / km) +28m 3:34 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Road X 155

2nd fastest parkrun although bit disappointed - thought it was going to be quicker.

It was pretty hot.

Losing a lot of time on the corners so got some advice from Phil (who overtook me on a corner) how to take them better. Turns out taking them wide and trying to keep the same stride pattern doesn't work - need to take them tighter, shorten stride and increase cadence. Will try this in future.

Splits
3:25 <-- bit fast at the start, as always

Running intervals (B+W Training) 1:18:07 [5] 8.72 km (8:57 / km) +74m 8:36 / km

Arrgh - it was a million degrees

Well 28 or something.

4*400(90s), 4 mins, 4*300(90s), 4 mins, 4*200(90s), 4 mins, 4*100(90s)

First time I've done this session; the recoveries are pretty long so the aim is to go pretty much all out

400s: 67, 70, 71, 73 <-- clearly overdid the first one here!
300s: 54, 53, 53, 53
200s: 32, 32, 34, 33
100s: 14, 15, 15, 14

Other than that first 400 being a faster pace than the 300s, went okay.

Running race (Self Transcendence Mile) 5:31 [5] 1.0 mi (5:31 / mi) +22m 5:10 / mi
shoes: Inov-8 Road X 155

Self Transcendence 3 x 1 mile relay - in a team with Tom and Charlie. We are usually all around the same pace and were aiming for 16:30 (5:30 each).

I was slightly over, but pretty close! Felt like hard work [hot], but managed to do slightly faster than the first mile of the two mile races, so fairly pleased. Managed to keep up sub-4mins/km pace up the hill [just].

Think Charlie did around 5:27; and we don't know what Tom did yet. I think we were in around 7th place, which was pretty good; there were a lot of teams. We were beaten by a team with Chris Palmer in it... and by Southville...but there was an overall B+W victory :)

Blisters painful but not slowing me down over the mile.

Note

Lol - it's been changed on power of 10 from a 10kmt to a 10kdh and hence it no longer appears as a PB!

I wonder how much Phil had to pay them...
