Orienteering race (SW Sprint Champs Prologue) 19:23 [5] 2.6 km (7:27 / km)

Really bad.

1,2,3 fine, 4 confused by purple line so ran towards it; think that it was just emphasising the barrier. 20s.

7 - wrong tree; should've looked at gaps rather than trees. 10s.

8 - couldn't see fence gaps until really close up; should have compassed to where expected gap to be. As a result no idea which gap used; assumed S and it was actually N. Hence; looked N for control and was way off - literally more than 100m. Need to be way more confident than this about where I was. 1 min 30s.

9 - second disaster. Probably still a bit annoyed after 8. Should have taken easy route as same distance - note to self; do this in future. Missed path through woods, didn't check compass, punched control without checking code; assumed all was fine, came out in field - "errrm...something is wrong..."
Worked out where I was and went to control fine - via a different one which I also punched. Another 1 min 30s.

Rest broadly ok other than route choice; was quicker in every instance to use the closer path to control and not cut accross anything; even though distance quite a lot longer sometimes. Also slow on the runin since for some reason I was convinced I had to cross the [extremely busy] road, so spent a bit of time jogging along the side of it waiting for traffic, then saw the actual finish.

So easily 4 mins lost here; bit depressing; running was pretty good.

Orienteering race (SW Sprint Champs Final) 19:16 [5] 2.6 km (7:25 / km)

1 - 10s lost since thought control on bench was start kite; and it was too close to actual veg boundary control for the rules - Adam did this too so it's an elite mistake and is therefore okay.

Not the best route choice to 6 although looking at it now, not as bad as I'd feared; probably only 15s in it.

8; coming out to the S would've been faster than wiggling around the earthbank to the N.

Missed obvious cut through to 9, probably another 10s although this happened because I was planning 10 which I did pretty well. Planned 11 successfully while implementing 10.

Possibly should've been planning 12 as this was another suboptimal choice although again there isn't that much in it.

Slow out of 13 worrying about if I'd missed a control - in my mind 12 and 13 were 3 controls...rest ok.

Only 45s or so down on Adam who made a few mistakes too; pleased to be 1s up on Jack Benham and half or minute or so up on Paul; but he wins overall as had a much better Prologue run.

Running race (Charmouth Challenge) 1:00:00 [5] 12.64 km (4:45 / km) +450m 4:02 / km

Started pretty quick on the flat (first km 3:35)...underestimated both the severity and length of the hill (second km 6:08) - found that really tough. Somehow I can deal with off-road hills much better than on road hills. Strava tells me there was 100m climb in this 1k. Being overtaken by people all the way up - lucky that Paul stopped for a drink else he'd have overtaken me near the top; as it was I never saw him.

Rest of course much better; overtook most of the people who'd come past before and was only re-passed by one guy who flew down the irregular coast path steps faster than I dared to follow. 14th overall out of the 234 finishers - not bad for second ever official fell race; the first being on thursday.

Over a minute ahead of the international woman; so wishing I was a girl a little bit.

Robin Phillips was way ahead after the first few miles (based on the video, so really pleased to be only 25 secs down.

Running race (Tintern Trot 2014) 41:59 [5] 9.51 km (4:25 / km) +290m 3:50 / km

First time I've tried to run a 10k after work - probably better than expected.

Fairly steady first 3k on the flat in 12 mins. Pace dropped quite a bit up the long steady hill and passed by a few people, but reclaimed most of the places on the short steep section that many people walked up - managed to keep running :)

Pretty quick on the downhill although was a bit dangerous in places. Gradually catching someone all the way down the hill; sat behind them for a bit to get a bit of energy back and then breezed casually past them (tactics! exactly what Phil did to me at the Bradley Stoke 10k) to make them feel slow.

They started to come back at me down the insanely steep but mercifully short rocky section, but I outpaced them easily in the last 500m.

Don't know where I came but maybe top 10(?) out of a few hundred maybe; pretty pleased.

Orienteering race (BOK Urban - Portishead) 49:49 [5] 8.1 km (6:09 / km) +139m 5:40 / km

So much better than last week :)

Big mistake on #2 - went out N to the road (S is probably the best route, but don't think this is too much worse if implemented correctly), but missed the control using path junc as attack point; found single rock then path; had to go round path until it met the other path to be confident enough that it was the mapped path, then came back down and it was really obvious. Must've been really close on the way up. Damn! Lost a minute here.

Wasn't sure which side 6 was going to be and didn't want to unfold the map; picked the wrong one.

Little mistake leaving 11, thought you could get through S then decided you couldn't and went back N - whereas actually S was fine.

Massive mistake on 23 - spent so long deciding which side it was going to be on while running SE, decided on the correct side but got to marina edge and turned N here rather than on road before. Didn't notice marina. Was only looking to my left, thinking "these buildings don't match at all; where is this little wiggle?" Stopped to think about it. For a g e s. Finally noticed water. Idiot.

Other than those two biggies, pretty happy with how it went; running pretty well. Map, course, control placement all good.

Did the short course as punishment for the mistakes; far more route choice than I was expecting; good sprint training. Sub 5min/ks! For the first time ever I think. Ran 3k as well; so it wasn't all just straight line.

Running intervals (B+W Training) 1:07:06 [5] 8.68 km (7:44 / km) +30m 7:36 / km

Intervals; 350m * 6 with 1 min recovery, then another 6 with 60,50,40,30,20 recovery. 350 rather than 400 so the properly quick people get the same recovery! There were a couple of people doing 300s which made me feel better.

Pretty humid - sweating after only doing drills which is always a bad sign.

First 6 350s in 66,67,68,67,66,66 - pretty consistent again

Next 6 in 66,67,66,68,70,68 - clearly feeling the shorter recovery although still pretty good.
