Running - Road/Track (Run with Susie) 52:30 [1] 6.69 km (7:51 / km) +75m 7:26 / km

Absolutely amazed to find someone in the group who actually wanted to come running with me.
Suspect I will propose at some point.

Fairly sedate pace, down to the sea, along and back, then up again. Muggy.

Orienteering - Urban race (York) 33:50 [5] 7.51 km (4:30 / km) +52m 4:21 / km
ahr:150 max:170 shoes: Adidas Adios 3

Another 2nd place behind Leon #standard
Very tentative at the start making sure the steps I could see were definitely the ones required to cross the bridge, and then on 2 ensuring I was definitely going to the correct side of the uncrossable as the control desc was a bit misleading (although entirely correct) and so was 30s down already. Again, tentative on the next long leg being careful to end up on the cycle path and not a road to nowhere.

But largely did the sprint sections well and the rest of the course too with just one more hesitation on 14 again ensuring I had a viable route.
Not really annoyed annoyed about these - I think what I need to work on is using the long dead running legs to plan the future complicated bits. But whenever I've tried to do that in the past I've just lost where I am and missed junctions. Practice makes perfect I guess...

Running - Road/Track (Easy jog) 20:38 [1] 3.54 km (5:50 / km) +39m 5:31 / km
shoes: Nike Pegasus 32

York courses weren't very long so bit of an extra jog. Hot.

Orienteering - Urban race (Knaresborough) 51:46 [5] 9.51 km (5:27 / km) +225m 4:52 / km
ahr:142 max:155 shoes: Adidas Adios 3

Well planned course, good area, lovely day - what's not to like?

Didn't get the route to 3 right but spotted the trap just about before it was too late.missed the optimum to 7 as well, unnecessary zigzagging.then there was a great section 13-20 going into and out of the castle grounds with excellent route choice.I think I only missed one on 18 where I took the shortest route but it involved going all the way up and all the way down again; lots of steps/tourists.otherwise happy.

3-4mins behind Leon I think, will be interesting to see splits/routegadget.

Running - Road/Track race (Parkrun - Macclesfield) 19:07 [5] 5.0 km (3:49 / km) +61m 3:36 / km
ahr:139 max:163 shoes: Adidas Adios 3

My new local; most definitely not flat - much undulation and many corners too make it not a fast course. Quite a nice one for a city park, though, although will be terrible in winter since there are some narrow paths and many many people to overtake.

Relatively pleased with time, didn't feel too bad.

Running - Trail race (West Nab) 52:09 [5] 8.85 km (5:54 / km) +501m 4:36 / km
ahr:145 max:161 shoes: X-Talon 225 (July 2017)

Shoelace snapped half an hour before the start, luckily there was enough of it left to salvage...think these shoes are pretty much dead anyway.

Seemed to be a very low turnout for this. From the start the whole field went off crazily fast up the first hill and I was was very near the back, thinking 'there's clearly a stile I don't know about'...unfortunately it was far worse than that; after about 100m there was over a km of single-track with no overtaking possible. So I had a nice jog at the beginning surrounded by people I was much better than, whilst the leaders disappeared into the distance.

Did mean I had a psychologically good race as I was then passing people the whole way around. There were a few more single track climbs later on though where I'd caught a group and then couldn't get past again which was frustrating, but later in the race there was plenty of opportunity and I think by the end I probably got to somewhere near the position I should've been in. Would be interesting to do it again with a different strategy.

And it was a good race, proper fell race with a bit of everything, steep accents and descents, some technical bits with tree roots, stream crossings, boggy bits, tussucks, even a bit of road for variety. Surprised field wasn't bigger really, but I guess a lot of people will be away for the BH.

Tight calves will need some pummeling before tomorrow.

Walked up Nancy. It's a brutal climb! Need to run it more. Great views from the top, so glad I bought a house here.

Also my table was delivered today, ending over a month of eating meals sitting at the piano :)

Orienteering - Forest race (Lyme Park) 43:58 [5] 6.67 km (6:36 / km) +279m 5:27 / km
ahr:137 max:161 shoes: X-talon 212 (blk/flro) - Nov17

https://www.mdoc.org.uk/results-archive/2018/2018-...

Fairly straightforward, felt to be running ok (although slow through the tussucks) but roundly beaten by the proper elites who showed up.

Bit of a miss on #2 going round an extra blob of green, then going straight to 9 caused me extra height gain that could've been avoided for not much extra distance.found 14 before 11, but they were only 50m apart.otherwise pretty good (but it was navigationally easy).

3rd when I left, but 8 mins down.I'd have struggled to save more than a couple of those at most.

Orienteering - Forest race (ScamperO) 1:29:17 [4] 13.67 km (6:32 / km) +485m 5:33 / km
ahr:122 max:147 shoes: Salomon Fellraiser

The good thing about O put on by a running club is that you can do really badly and still come 3rd (and be only 1 point away from winning!).

1:25k map with clues. Two 4 point controls, all the rest 1 point.

Basically took a bad route from the start, changed my mind a few times, didn't really look at the contours. Second control I saw got the answer to the question wrong (wrote down the wrong thing on the footpath sign) and then just missed an obvious junction.if I'd have got this two I'd have won...after that though still kept missing junctions and not ending up taking the route I'd planned so had quite a few dog legs and was very inefficient.
Much better after about halfway once I'd got into the map/scale and did really well on the way back, judged the time really well too, but too little too late unfortunately.
Nice evening though and still won some beer (although missed out on the jam).
Scored 21 points, tied with someone else who was 30s faster. Winning score was 22. Would've got 23 by just not being an idiot, and probably 25 without actually running any faster and just spotting the right junctions - some local knowledge would've gone a long way (and I'll have it next year...)

Didn't feel like going out but fine after running for a bit, another lovely evening, good chat, good weight practice again.

Orienteering - Forest race (Brun Valley Forest Park) 1:03:02 [3] 9.02 km (6:59 / km) +192m 6:19 / km
ahr:124 max:144 shoes: X-Talon 225 (July 2017)

3rd/24 despite a terrible run losing about 8 mins.
Could only have been 2nd, though.
http://www.pfo.org.uk/results-archive/2018_05_20_b...
http://www.pfo.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#102&cour...

Learning:
(1) take more time over bearings rather than following elephants...
(2) if the contours don't seem to fit then work out why rather than just running around. This happened twice today and the reason why was because significant contour features are hidden under the (unbroken) circles. I should've been able to work that out at the time.

Running - Trail race (Hathersage Hurtle) 2:36:18 [5] 31.45 km (4:58 / km) +800m 4:25 / km
ahr:144 max:160 (sick) shoes: Salomon Fellraiser

Relatively uninteresting, probably should've gone with the fell race (a third of the distance though, and I fancied something long). Really good views but surface was definitely 'easy trail'.
Really really hot. Wore my new cap (inov8 sell one exactly the same maroon as the Macc vest, which is nice) and it performed admirably. Also remembered to wear suncream despite arriving 20 mins later than planned due to a cycle race closing roads (surprised to see anyone out, thought the country would be watching the wedding!).

Didn't carry water as I thought the water stations would be sufficient, though this was a good decision although it was pretty marginal.

Got lost near the end - luckily I was carrying the map and was able to mitigate the results of this, didn't go much further than the official route.

6th: https://www.racetek-live.co.uk/website/public_resu...

Didn't lose any places as a result of the error as the guy behind me went the same way. I apologised afterwards and he said 'I should know better,I did the race last year'. At the finish it turns out the majority of people has gone wrong and they had to send someone out to mark it better :)

Last few km were necessarily a brisk jog - definitely still ill. Pleased to overtake a couple of people up the hill to Stanage Edge and then another one along the top - ie when it became marginally technical (but not really). Guy at the end who I'd passed congratulated me on my technique on the technical bit. He has clearly not been to the lakes.

Terrible night last night, proper fever with constant shivering and everything, for at least 3 hours. Thought I was probably going to die.

Basically fine today so not sure what that was about.

EDIT, incorrect, definitely ill...

Running - Trail race (Shining Tor Fell Race) 45:19 [5] 10.09 km (4:29 / km) +349m 3:50 / km
ahr:161 max:188 (sick)

Trailrocs.
Lovely evening again. A few hundred metres of road and then an ascent which is on paths and runnable all the way up. Struggled aerobically but legs felt ok. Then undulating along the flags along the top, Shining Tor and Cat's Tor, great views, then a 3k long descent which according to the road runners was 'technical' but I would have described it as 'not technical'.

Felt like a good race for me but miles behind the leaders; think I was 25th of 300 or so. Didn't make the Macc team; 5th Harrier I think.

Another really good race though :)

Orienteering - Forest race (Lyme Park intro) 28:34 [5] 4.67 km (6:07 / km) +171m 5:10 / km
ahr:133 max:150 shoes: X-Talon 225 (July 2017)

One annoying mistake due to not reading map closely enough, otherwise good.
Lovely evening again.

Nice and relaxed in the sun. Back to carrying c.4kgs for the slow ones.
Feeling alright.

Orienteering - Forest race (Newton Fell) 1:37:26 [4] 9.56 km (10:12 / km) +548m 7:55 / km
ahr:125 max:160 shoes: X-talon 212 (blk/flro) - Nov17

Hardest technical o event I've done for as long as I can remember. What I'd describe as 'proper' orienteering. Didn't actually do that much wrong - but really really really slow because I wanted to stay in contact with the map. Found it very hard, especially 1:7.5k from 1:25k last week!
Terrible result,

Running - Trail race (Cressbrook Crawl) 51:15 [5] 10.79 km (4:45 / km) +353m 4:05 / km
ahr:148 max:163 shoes: X-Talon 225 (July 2017)

12th

Not a very interesting race (it days a lot about the quality of the races up here that I can't remember last time I wrote that), probably wouldn't do it again. Good conditions, though, and some nice elements. Mostly well marked other than in one key place just before the river which probably lost me 30s or so but no places.

Paced it quite well and finished strongly up the road hill at the end. There was that and quite a lot of course along an old railway path which made it a bit dull, plus the other bits were forested or in a valley so no views of anything either.

Felt to be running ok and didn't have the immediate lactic feeling on the climbs so think I might've recovered from last weekend now.

Friday May 11, 2018 #

Note
(rest day)

Turns out the sort-of-path across private land from the back of my house leads to my own* private cliff. I will have to start hosting climbers...
There are some interesting features that I assume are ex-industrial, like a steeply sloping brick tunnel halfway up the cliff which I assume water came down, and random sets of steps that no longer lead anywhere.
Need to go back wearing o-shoes as it got too steep!

*well technically not, but I think I own the land that is the only reasonably viable way of getting to it, although need to do some more exploring to be sure of that. I certainly doubt anyone will mind/notice me using it!

Running - Trail race (Tansley Hill Race) 42:53 [5] 8.92 km (4:48 / km) +293m 4:08 / km

16th

Another one for the trailrocs.

Tough race, harder than Rainow yesterday. Multiple steps going up, and descents with long grass with ruts hardened in the sun underneath made it a bit treacherous. Otherwise - bit of everything, stream crossings, technical rocky bits, nice trail through forest. More of a trail race than a fell race.

As yesterday, running ok for the flat and down but still feeling it in the legs on any of the climbs.

15th ish I think. The top 2 were about 6 mins ahead of the rest of the field.

Shoes trailroc 280s; so old they aren't on my list...

Light drizzle on and off but very nice running temperature which made a change after the weekend. Slow on the climbs but actually legs didn't feel anywhere near as bad as might've been expected. Good on the flats and descents.

Came about 13th, won team prize for MaccH :)

Wanted to do lots of jobs but actually ended up just doing some of the jobs that three days camping generates - therefore in overall job deficit compared to before the weekend. Sigh.

Running - Trail race (GL3D - Day 3) 6:44:02 [5] 32.36 km (12:29 / km) +2484m 9:01 / km
shoes: X-talon 212 (blk/flro) - Nov17

http://live.sportident.co.uk/home/multistage/multi...

5th out of the total 38 starters. Just maintained my always-top-5-in-a-MM statistic. Only 5 mins off 4th... but literally hours behind 3rd - so not troubling the podium.

_____

Hard climb to start with and legs wrecked from the off as yesterday, but more used to it now. Good route up to Great Gable although some said Green Gable first was better as it avoided the scree slope. Descent off Great Gable was Ricky and horrible. Then long nice run around KirkFell and up and over Pillar, good contouring round Scoat to Haycock. Rocky trying to get off the top but became good terrain for the first part down to the valley so cut the corner before it came heather.

Oversimplified the forest as was only expecting one river and so a bit confused about where I was, didn't stop for long enough to work it out; actually a good route (although involved getting quite wet) but implemented slowly die to lack of confidence.

Last hard climb up to Starling Dodd and then tricky descent from Great Borne before a soul destroying run to the finish. 10th, although it was close today (only 7 mins behind 6th).slipped to 5th overall.

A really hard three days, made harder by the heat but would have been even more grim in the rain because the rocks would've been so much slower, I'd have been out for twice the time. Only just made the very stringent cut off time today.

Food worked well although need 2:1 shot bloks to energy bars rather than 1:1.
Expedition food - pasta ones good, rice ones not so much.

Sunday May 6, 2018 #

Running - Trail race (GL3D - Day 2) 8:34:16 [5] 44.54 km (11:33 / km) +3068m 8:35 / km
shoes: X-talon 212 (blk/flro) - Nov17

Planned to start quite early, but up at 6am greeted by thick mist, decided to hang around for a bit. Some great inversion views when just the peaks were visible above the clouds. Still misty when I started but above 200m or so it was fine - should've started earlier and so run more in the cooler temperatures. It was HOT. Took the path off Rannerdale thanks to the warning on the map about steep cliffs, but actually looking back at the face, it would've been fine, many people won't straight down with no issue. Made first mistake at stream, didn't drink anything or fill up bottle. Planned to do this at next stream up Grasmoor...but it was dry - and there was no more water for literally hours.did I mention it was rather warm? Grasmoor was an hour of constant climbing and was really tough after yesterday, my quads didn't appreciate it at all. Felt ok at the top though but intimidated about how much there was still to come.
Nice ridge run up and down to Causey Pike. Messed up the last bit of the descent following the wrong person but thought would take the opportunity to go to the river - however it was 20m lower down in a gorge and I didn't fancy getting back up again, so had to wait another 10 mins.
Stopped waist deep in the river to cool off and drink a lot of water.also took my shoes off to take the accumulated rocks out (maybe buy some kind of debris guards? Do they work?) And retie laces better. Probably stationary for 10 mins which is the most I ever have been on a race, but after more than 3 hours without water I needed it.

Really struggling both physically and psychologically up Catbells and strongly thinking about retiring at Honister. Overtook 2nd place from day 1 who said he had a toe problem...and was going to retire at Honister. This made it even more likely that I would too until my competitive steak took over and I realised I'd be one place higher overall if I stuck it out. I think this is the closest I've ever come to giving up without being injured - I just felt dreadful.

After getting more water at the tarn and going down to Honister though, felt a bit better.although it was harsh being able to see the campsite at Buttermere from Brandreth and then still knowing you had a third of the course to go. Probably made some bad nav choices along the ridge to Red Pike against the people who know the area and know where the trods are, but managing to keep moving ok.pretty unpleasant descent and then really starting to feel like an ultra distance runner (ie, running but barely above walking pace) back along Buttermere.
One of the longest, hardest days I've done, and the longest hardest day as part of a multi day event.

7th, still 4th overall. Pleased to finish.

Running - Trail race (GL3D - Day 1) 7:22:45 [5] 45.63 km (9:42 / km) +3084m 7:15 / km
shoes: X-talon 212 (blk/flro) - Nov17

Feeling good for this despite the 3am wake up in order to get to the Lakes on time. Safe route to 1 which was dubious about at the time and thought it was a mistake, but planner's route (gg, no less) thinks it was the right call.controls fairly straightforward as expected.
Grim climb up through heather to Dodd but then some nice ridgelines. It was a very hot day and very conscious of not having suncream on. Glad I had a cap, although note to self, buy a better cap rather than using a free one which has no tightening mechanism. Cap seems to have kept my face from burning but nothing has stopped.my arms/hands unforts.one interesting route choice (hopefully routegadget will appear) and then some hard climbs to the finish.
Had mentally budgeted 7 hours so 7:20 not a bad estimate.didn’t feel injured although hips were definitely tightening up. Stopped to fill water bottle more often than I ever have before in a mm.easily ate 2 packs of shot bloks but only managed 4 energy bars, found it hard to eat enough in the heat.
Strange to be at the campsite socialising in the sunshine rather than huddling inside!Very un-MM like.
Currently lying 4th on the Expert course out of about 40, think this is pretty good.

Packing for the weekend - race bag at c.2kgs so should feel light after what I was training with.

Indian (Eastern Revive, Wilmslow) excellent if a touch pricy.

Orienteering - Forest race (Delamere East) 47:39 [4] 7.68 km (6:12 / km) +143m 5:41 / km
ahr:137 max:158 shoes: X-Talon 225 (July 2017)

Mostly ok, but some poor route choices caused by not adapting to the map.

It was faster to stay on the paths as much as possible before the undergrowth was often pretty bad. Doing this alright until 6 but then failed to plan my exit route, should've come back the same way but instead forged on and got stuck in grot.

Mistake on 10, control was much further down the slope than I expected. Then good until 19 where tried to go straight across some white which wasn't.

Not bad for an evening event really, but I definitely prefer evening fell races.

Bit of a jog around lyme park as I was there anyway. The parkrun hill felt much longer and steeper than it does during parkrun!
