Orienteering - Forest race (JK Middle Brereton) 52:14 [5] 7.12 km (7:20 / km) +330m 5:57 / km
ahr:148 max:171 shoes: X-Talon 225 (July 2017)

Plan was to play it really safe, and had good results all the way until 23, despite there being a path most of the way and despite being on this path, for some reason didn't quite appreciate just where on it and so convinced myself I was on the wrong spur (actually on the right spur) and so went and explored another one.lost 4 mins here because I was so sure I'd been wrong to start with. Annoying since I was being so careful.

Some more scrappy mistakes after this due to annoyance. Not too fussed about those. Not a terrible run, fitness ok.

Orienteering - Urban race (JK Sprint MOD Stafford) 16:21 [5] 4.01 km (4:05 / km) +22m 3:58 / km
ahr:132 max:164 shoes: Salomon Fellraiser

Trivial course. One bad route choice 10-11 but no more than 10s, and one map folding issue where I had to slow down due to losing my place post-folding. Otherwise no problems.

43rd/87

+3:32 on Kris which is 6s improvement on last year...

#tophalf

Orienteering - Forest race (Biathlon O) 5:34 [3] 0.99 km (5:37 / km) +5m 5:29 / km
ahr:133 max:150 shoes: Salomon Fellraiser

Pretty fun. 5/5 on the practice shooting with no pressure and low HR, 3/5 immediately after running the sprint course, resulting in two penalty loops.

Laser rifle very easy to use. Would definitely have a go at this if it was properly competitive.

Note
(rest day)

Was going to recce kinder downfall after work, but not really enough time to pack and clean as well :(
Rest day probably good before the JK anyway.

Wednesday Mar 28, 2018 #

Running - Trail (MH Fell Training) 1:42:29 [3] 14.62 km (7:01 / km) +578m 5:51 / km
ahr:147 max:187 (sick) shoes: Salomon Fellraiser

Struggled - right at the back of the group. Loads of people, first time it's been split slow/medium/fast and carrying the 4kg I couldn't keep up. If it's like that again I won't take it! Would've been fine without it. Good training though.

Only coughing occasionally. Could definitely feel my ankle although not as bad as I thought it would be which is good news for the weekend.

Also - it was bloody cold. I've been back for an hour and my thumb still hurts.going to have to do something about this darn raynauds.

Tuesday Mar 27, 2018 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Still not feeling 100%.

Monday Mar 26, 2018 #

Running - Road/Track (MH Road Training) 1:14:43 [3] 13.68 km (5:28 / km) +112m 5:15 / km
ahr:134 max:154 (sick) shoes: Nike Pegasus 32

Y'know how some days everything feels good and running just feels easy?

This was not one of those days. Felt like I had very little energy; I did skip lunch yesterday...but for dinner I did have a massive Indian, so I don't think there's a problem there.

Made up for it just now by eating half an apple crumble, so all good.

Tried old shoes in case the Hoka's had caused my ankle thing - bit early to say. Rest day tomorrow I think.

Sunday Mar 25, 2018 #

Orienteering - Urban race (Macclesfield) 1:05:10 [5] 13.74 km (4:45 / km) +220m 4:23 / km
ahr:147 max:172 (sick) shoes: Adidas Adios 3

Basically pwned everyone:
https://www.mdoc.org.uk/results-archive/2018/2018-...
http://www.mdoc.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#279&cou...
Although it's not a proper victory if Leon isn't there...

Some marginal choices but I'm happy with the ones I made in the most part. Won the leg I went down a dead end on so can't really claim a time loss there.didn't see black line to 19 until too late to get the optimum route,10s maybe. 22 and 23 my two worst controls, splits say I lost 30s on each.went into and out of 22 to the S whereas N is better, but it doesn't look like a minute mistake! Luckily I had enough of a lead to get away with it.happy with rest.

Definitely on very last stages of illness; mucus has returned to normal colour (aren't you glad you're reading this). Happy with how I was running although my suspicious inner-ankle niggle is back and I might have to see a physio since I have no idea what it might be despite googling. Will probably get the house move sorted first, though, because at the moment I have no idea how much money I have and how much has been earmarked for expenses.

Saturday Mar 24, 2018 #

Running - Road/Track race (Parkrun - Congleton) 18:10 [5] 5.0 km (3:38 / km) +7m 3:36 / km
ahr:142 max:159 (sick) shoes: Adidas Adios 3

Flat, good conditions, warmer than expected, well paced. Definitely a PB course. Fastest I've run for 14 months so really pleased given the illness (which whilst definitely improving is still very much present).

Orienteering - Forest race (JOK Chasing Sprint prolog) 26:08 [5] 3.89 km (6:43 / km) +73m 6:09 / km
ahr:152 max:180 (sick) shoes: X-Talon 225 (July 2017)

Went for this rather than the fell race in the end to maximise the chances of being able to run tomorrow too :)

Rough in places but not too bad.nav was pretty good, some bad choices, one compass mistake on 8 trying to go straight but actually going due West but well rescued by contours.

4th and about a minute down on 3rd, 30s up on 5th. Should be a good chase; will aim to stay safe and do my own thing.

Orienteering - Forest race (JOK Chasing Sprint chase) 22:49 [5] 3.67 km (6:13 / km) +52m 5:48 / km
ahr:139 max:160 (sick) shoes: X-Talon 225 (July 2017)

Steady start, made some safe choices to get into it. Was about to make a mistake on #6 by going too high, but saw Zoe coming back down from too high which saved me and also meant I'd caught a minute.

Decided to follow Zoe.

Together to 7 and then followed her to 8 and we both went too far left; damn you Zoe! I almost think this was intentional so I lost confidence in her...overtook to 10 and then rather than doing the sensible thing of staying together I went straighter to 11 which was far less safe, missed the control and she got past me again; didn't see her after that.didn't really do anything else wrong but was a bit tentative after the mistake.

4th, so no-one caught me :)

Really enjoyed it actually, reminded me why I like o. Good to have the close competition from Zoe, good practice for the JK relay next week.

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Coughing all last night, up at 2:30am to Google natural remedies (I don't own any cough syrup or Lockets or anything).
Ended up mixing honey and whiskey, which not only worked like a charm but was also lovely. Possibly because I still had the cough, but no longer cared.

Thursday Mar 22, 2018 #

Running - Road/Track (MH Road Training) 1:05:48 [4] 12.92 km (5:06 / km) +158m 4:48 / km
ahr:136 max:156 (sick) shoes: Hoka Cavu

First Thursday run, with the A/B group. Turns out they are considerably faster than the other groups I've run with - apparently they usually run further than this too!
Managed to keep up but definitely more of a run and less of a jog than usual.

Wednesday Mar 21, 2018 #

Running - Trail 1:22:54 [3] 12.29 km (6:45 / km) +392m 5:49 / km
ahr:134 max:157 (sick) shoes: X-Talon 212 (May 17)

Steady run with the fell group; quite a bit of road but good chat (mainly moaning about how we're all ill).

Tuesday Mar 20, 2018 #

Running - Road/Track (Local loop) 40:44 [3] 8.93 km (4:34 / km) +127m 4:16 / km
ahr:136 max:158 (sick) shoes: Hoka Cavu

Still coughing everywhere, running ok though.

Note
(sick)

Parkrun then JOK Chasing Sprint, or Parkrun then Boulsworth Bog fell race?

Tempted by the fell race since there is orienteering on Sunday, but feel like I haven't really done any orienteering for ages and the JK is the week after.

Actually - since the JK is the week after, that's loads of O, so I should do the fell race.

It turns out writing stuff helps me make decisions!

Monday Mar 19, 2018 #

Running - Road/Track (Evening jog) 23:59 [3] 4.9 km (4:54 / km) +76m 4:33 / km
ahr:133 max:144 (sick) shoes: Hoka Cavu

Stupid migraine right at the time of running club pushed this back to after dinner, which I hate.
I think being ill is making me more susceptible to them. Really fed up of it now, cough and sore throat has been added to list of symptoms. I couldn't recognise my own voice today.

Good thing is that post-ITB stretching and massaging the outside of my quad, didn't feel my knee at all during the run. Now just have to remember to do this before every run.

Sunday Mar 18, 2018 #

Running - Trail (Everything is cancelled) 25:09 [2] 4.22 km (5:58 / km) +86m 5:25 / km
ahr:127 max:143 (sick) shoes: X-talon 212 (blk/flro) - Nov17

Chilly jog around my parents neighbourhood.

In fairness to the country, there is quite a bit of snow - but a shame that THREE fell races plus the orienteering were all cancelled; I thought I'd arranged quite a lot of contingency there.

Hopefully they will all be rearranged so as to not clash though - then there would be an upside!

Saturday Mar 17, 2018 #

Running - Trail (Brooksie's Mystery Recce) 1:38:45 [3] 13.33 km (7:24 / km) +248m 6:47 / km
ahr:143 max:170 (sick) shoes: X-Talon 225 (July 2017)

Interesting concept for a race; unseen beforehand, get given a map but also guided around the route, then 10 mins after everyone has finished, race around the same route.

So a bit like a very serious negative split...

It's Beast from the East MkII this weekend - snowing throughout. Hands were painfully icy whole way around; otherwise was fine though. Constantly snowing and very windy. Snow wasn't settling and ground was in reasonable condition for most of the route - which was ok but not massively interesting.

Probably about 40 entrants. I tried to put in minimal effort for this half but was still relatively near the front, especially near the beginning.

Got very little sleep last night (which is unusual for me) because of this horrendous cold - Lemsip in the morning at 6am perked me up a bit - very nearly didn't come to the race but glad I did as felt ok whilst actually running.

Running - Trail race (Brooksie's Mystery Tour) 1:04:34 [5] 13.1 km (4:56 / km) +242m 4:31 / km
ahr:148 max:167 (sick) shoes: X-Talon 225 (July 2017)

1st :)

https://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/78cf0e_7dd72bb3f613...

Toyed with the idea of running round with and then outsprinting whoever was at the front, but then they announced that the race time would also include both getting our shoes on again (outside after the recce) and taking them off again and I decided I needed quite a big lead in order to have time to remove them. Took a bit longer than other people at the start to get them on, too, since I didn't want to have to stop and re-tie later.

Fears unfounded, low quality field so ended up well ahead. Remembered the course better than expected, barely had to glance at the map. Soup and bread included afterwards, and won some beer. Good day out, glad I came despite feeling rotten both before and afterwards!

Friday Mar 16, 2018 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Hoping not too ill to run tomorrow.

Thursday Mar 15, 2018 #

Running - Road/Track (Easy jog) 26:43 [1] 5.24 km (5:06 / km) +84m 4:43 / km
ahr:141 max:159 (sick) shoes: Hoka Cavu

My knee hurt again yesterday, but we stopped to regroup a couple of times and I did I different stretch each time. After the ITB stretch my knee was mysteriously fine for a bit.
Did a couple of mins ITB stretching before running tonight and it felt much better.
Will make that tens-of-minutes before the race on Saturday and fingers crossed it will be ok.

Lemsip is gradually working.

Wednesday Mar 14, 2018 #

Note
(sick)

Similar to getting back from Japan, probably picked up something on the plane.

Still, Lemsip will cure it. Lemsip cures everything.

Running - Trail (MH Fell Training) 1:37:56 [3] 12.93 km (7:34 / km) +639m 6:04 / km
(sick) shoes: X-Talon 212 (May 17)

Despite the awful cold felt ok on the run. Got back and felt sorry for myself though, so ate quite a lot of American chocolate.

Nice evening and good to be running in the warm and dry! Apparently it's going to get cold again this weekend, though.

Did loads of admin.

Note
(rest day)

Been up for 30+ hours. Yawn. Waiting for shopping delivery which with hindsight would've been better tomorrow!

Very nearly went for a brief run but it was raining.

Running - Trail (Pre-breakfast Park City) 29:09 [3] 5.47 km (5:20 / km) +65m 5:02 / km

Skiing (CAT Skiing) 45:58 [3] 12.59 km (16.4 kph)

Quality rather than quantity today. Although given the obscene cost, not sure I'd do this again!
Video on Facebook.

Saw a wolf, which is apparently pretty rare in Utah. It was enormous; from far away I thought it was a donkey.

Running - Trail (Park City in twilight) 58:45 [3] 11.44 km (5:08 / km) +108m 4:54 / km
ahr:138 max:153

Beautiful scenery. Just about managed to get back before dark.

Aim was to come back faster than going out - failed by a minute - but it was down on the way there and up on the way back, so don't feel too bad.

Tuesday Mar 6, 2018 #

Running - Road/Track (Pre-breakfast Jackson) 24:13 [3] 4.93 km (4:55 / km) +24m 4:48 / km

Gym Cardio (Treadmill) 25:00 [3]

American TV has too much advertising.

Awesome conditions today! See Facebook video.

Skiing (Jackson) 2:22:10 [3] 39.94 km (16.9 kph)

Note

I am eating so much. Must do something about that.

Tomorrow.

No wonder America has an obesity problem.

Got a free dessert today, though, because there was a metal staple embedded in it.could've been quite nasty.suspect I could have sued them, although couldn't be bothered.

Running - Road/Track (Exploring Jackson) 35:10 [3] 6.14 km (5:44 / km) +46m 5:31 / km

Jog around snowy streets of Jackson.
Knee still feels a bit weird.

Thursday Mar 1, 2018 #

Note
(rest day)

Transfer to Jackson. It's very wild-west here.

Weather was a bit rubbish so went to the gym and did some bike + cross trainer. Reminded me of why I dislike the gym; should just have faced the weather. Will in future.
