Running - Trail (Short off-road threshold) 16:35 [4] 3.51 km (4:43 / km) +39m 4:29 / km
ahr:145 max:161 shoes: Asics Nimbus 17

Turned from a long slow jog to a short quick threshold when I didn't set off when planned.

Right ankle went quite badly in the field; definite day off tomorrow and hopefully it'll be ok by the weekend.

Running - Road/Track intervals (B+W Training) 1:15:55 [5] 9.68 km (7:51 / km)
max:165 shoes: Asics Nimbus 17

4*400m(60s),(3 mins),
4*200m(30s),(3 mins),
4*400m(60s),(3 mins),
4*200m(60s)

We've now done this session with 60s between everything, 30s between the 200s both times, and now varying between the first and second 200s.

400s: 77,76,76,75,77,75,77,77
200s: 34,36,36,36,35,35,34,34

Marginally worse than Feb, but it was marginally windy tonight so not too bad. A pretty short session so will probably go for a longer run tomorrow eve.

Orienteering - Forest race (JK Relay - Storthes Hall) 37:40 [5] 6.06 km (6:13 / km) +382m 4:44 / km
shoes: X-Talon 190 (orange)[9.5]

5th place, M120+, with Mark and Paul

Came back in 6th place,1s behind 5th but about a minute behind 4th.top 3 miles ahead.

http://www.jk.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#65&route=...

11th/23 on my gaffle, 2nd on M120+ and and ahead of some big names...

Scrappy though.

Found a control in a similar feature in the chaos of #1, 30s.too high up the slope, but tbh wasn't thinking about contours.ok through the campus section although a bit tentative.Found the same control as I did for #1 for #8 (too high up the slope again!i don't think I'd have made the mistake either time in notarelay); another 30s.

30s on #13, getting the wrong control and beginning to leave for 14 before checking the code and working out what I'd done (which was follow the pack rather than navigate).30s on #17 standing 5m away from the control looking for the extremely well disguised pit; had to wait to be led in.

So not a bad run really, the 2 mins lost wouldn't have made any difference to our position. Felt like a much worse run at the time.so a pretty good weekend really! Apart from the Sprint.

Orienteering - Forest race (JK Day 3 - Kilnsey) 1:46:06 [5] 16.71 km (6:21 / km) +470m 5:34 / km
shoes: X-Talon 212 (Jan16)

http://www.jk.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#64&route=...

Another solid performance to finish 6th overall (7th yesterday, 8th today)
http://siresults.co.uk/2016/JK/overall/m21l_class....

Rain at the start which brightened into glorious sunshine for about 30s before becoming overcast. Very glad to finish several minutes before the torrential hail began.

Aimed to concentrate on being really careful and not just blindly rushing into things. This plan worked well until later on near the end of the course, when I'd forgotten about it.

Annoying loss of (60s) on #3 where I went to the right crag and peered over the edge and saw nothing, went off to check another crag, navigated back to the same crag and saw it tucked underneath. I think more fairly this should have been described as 'crag, under rather than crag, foot.

It was around this point that I realised the blue stuff on the map was meant to be grey and was limestone rather than marsh. I then remembered Paul telling us the previous night about someone else doing this.

Flirted with the idea of taking a more circuitous route on the long leg to avoid some up-down but decided that straight was probably best over this terrain. Happy with this.

In 4th place at #10 - good stuff. Then lost another (60s) on 12 in the wrong line of pits; the plan of using the crossing point behind the control as an AP worked though and prevented a more major loss.

Annoying (2mins) lost on 16 - only a k or so from the end now and starting to get tired I guess - plan worked perfectly and came out at a small enclosure - then made a terrible assumption that it wasn't the enclosure I wanted (despite there being plenty of evidence to the contrary) and ran in totally the wrong direction for a bit until realising.

Then lost another (60s) on 17 not being precise enough and losing where I was, then struggling to relocate.

Rest of course fine; to have no biggies and only lose 5 mins in total I'm quite happy with; running speed is good; 5 mins quicker would've put me 3rd today. Given most time lost was very near the end, if I keep up the longer races I should get better at keeping the concentration for long enough. So a good weekend so far; fingers crossed for a good run in the relay although the change in map scale may be an issue...

Orienteering - Forest race (JK Day 2 - Wass) 1:35:11 [5] 11.04 km (8:37 / km) +419m 7:15 / km

Hurrary - good run at a big event :)
7th/37, M21L

Despite compass issue - more on that later.

1:15,000 map a nightmare to read. Magnifier the whole way round was a lifesaver. Would have had no chance without it.

http://www.jk.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#61&route=...

No real mistakes more than a few seconds until #11; went back to check a knoll which I knew was probably wrong, and was wrong, but didn't have quite enough confidence to ignore it (60s).

Slight wobble 16-17 ("this river looks at a weird angle, and that fence; what's going on here? But I can be confident in the river/fence combination, so I'll carry on") but no real time loss. Didn't see the lower ride to 18 so not the best route there.

23-24 - major wobble - "I'm expecting a river running N-S, but that one is running E-W. Okay - so where must I be? Wait - there isn't an E-W river on the map. Am I off the map?! No I can't be; I'd have crossed a fence. Wtf is going on. There's the fence, there's the river, there are loads of people here so I'm not off the map - I must have a compass issue. Looks fine though..."

My compass has a small crack in the bottom edge. It doesn't appear to have any air in it. But something is catching on the side, so it doesn't rotate sometimes. So it's fine for about 180 degrees of rotation, but then it sticks. This is a major issue. I didn't fully realise quite how bad it was until the end. But I was essentially running without a compass through lots of legs where you needed a compass. Anyway, it was at least 60s of confusion on leg 24.

25 was the only leg which was entirely luck, there was no distinction between the white and the LG unlike on the other parts of the map, and I missed the pond, so no real idea where I was until...the control. Phew!

Rest good until the unmapped stile which 50% of the courses went over (our crossing point wasn't on their map, either).

So only really 2 mins and 2 places lost:
http://siresults.co.uk/2016/JK/day2/m21l_class.htm...
in a tough area with 34 controls. Very happy with that.

Note

Interesting side-point - when did the compass break? It wasn't today; it must've been broken for the whole thing. Now I recall, I do remember some odd behaviour at Bridgwater, although because that was urban I didn't really pick up on it at the time. I guess it must have been at the Quantocks the week before, where I do remember falling over and landing on it.

Orienteering - Urban race (JL Sprint Leeds Uni) 20:38 [5] 3.0 km (6:53 / km) +45m 6:24 / km
shoes: Nike Pegasus 32

Bit rubbish.
Very short first leg, then long complex #2 which didn't spend long enough (ie any time) thinking about - lost over a minute going a circuitous way.nothing else that major but 15s here or there going the suboptimal way around buildings and things.
Second half of the course I was into the map and didn't do that much wrong.

Really good fun and leg times where I didn't make errors show that my running speed isn't too bad. Hopefully the rest of the weekend's longer courses will play to my strengths a bit more...

We call this 1500m but it's much closer to 1400m. So they're 1400s, not 1500s.

Consistent. And quicker than I've done them before.

max:162 shoes: Asics Nimbus 17

2x(3x450m),5x300m,10x150m

First 450 was a 500, then demoted by Keith (I think unreasonably - the other guys set off way too fast!)

500s: 104
450s: 91,90,91,89,87
300s: 57,58,56,55,55
150s: 26*9,25

No DOMS after the Cheese yesterday interestingly; given it was so bad for the Grizzly.

Largely similar times to last month.

Running - Trail race (The Big Cheese) 1:51:41 [5] 15.0 mi (7:27 / mi) +679m 6:32 / mi
shoes: Mizuno Wave Kien

EDIT: 11th/205

12ish. Found this really tough on the hills! Far more concentrated hills than the grizzly; ie there were only really four but the first three were over a km each and I can't handle that. The first downhill I got loads of people back who'd passed me on the up, but they all came past again on the third hill up to the trig point and I never saw them again...

...apart from one who I sneaked past with a few hundred metres to go after running the last 2k downhill at 3:25 pace :)

No problem with the distance although it did seem to go on a bit.I think I would psychologically struggle to cope with a marathon.

On the plus side: B&W won first team, so I have 1.5kgs of applewood smoked cheddar to add to whatever comes in my cheese hamper! It's going to be a cheesy few weeks...

Orienteering - Urban race (Bridgwater Urban) 49:24 [5] 11.43 km (4:19 / km) +36m 4:15 / km
shoes: Nike Pegasus 32

First urban of the season. Missed a few of the complicated route choices but didn't do anything drastically wrong until #17 where I worked out my route, was happy with it, then lost concentration and ended up in a dead end I'd specifically planned to avoid! Always with the concentration! My route on this control would have been 30s down on the best anyway, but my error added another 60s loss.

Then good again until 21 where I went around some extra corners for no benefit, 30s.

Frustratingly, finished only about a minute behind Tom - I had time for one error but not two! In fairness he lost 60s in the early part of the course; I was running faster at the beginning but was clearly tiring by the end. Very close on most splits, though, which was good. Fingers crossed for some ranking points - since the course was combined with the veterans I'd expect a pretty wide spread of times...

Running - Road/Track race (Weston Prom 5m) 29:59 [5] 8.0 km (3:45 / km) +25m 3:41 / km

I definitely prefer longer, off-road races...this was a most unpleasant experience. Set off too fast and then couldn't hold on; getting overtaken throughout after the first k. Bit demoralizing. No leg issues, just aerobic fitness not up to the job!

Running - Trail intervals (B+W Training) 50:47 [5] 6.76 km (7:31 / km) +6m 7:29 / km
max:163 shoes: Asics Nimbus 17

14x350m (60s)

On the grass, in the dark, with one corner.

Being used to doing intervals on the track, found this hard to pace! Also without a well defined start point, the times could easily be a second either way.and who knows if it was even 350m. Anyway.

350s: 67,67,65,67,66,68,66,68,66,68,65,68,64,67

Pretty consistent. Similar times to the one time I've done 350s on the track, which suggests it was probably a bit short.

Sore throat - but not bad enough for 'ill' yet.

Glad I entered the Big Cheese as I was randomly selected to win the cheese hamper from their sponsor!! #excited

Orienteering - Forest race (Welsh Champs Sugarloaf) 1:23:44 [5] 11.74 km (7:08 / km) +440m 6:00 / km
shoes: X-Talon 190 (blue)

Apart from the slight disqualification, this went pretty well...

Very tentative at the start due to trying to be really careful not to make a mistake! Got confidence with the two platforms which led in to the control but had already lost 2 mins to Clive by this point. By far the best route seems to be along the river - totally missed that.

Took a higher line than Clive to #3, misreading index contours, but realised and dropped down and hit it about the same time (hurrah!). Stayed with him for 4 and 5, but he pathed round to 6 whereas I went straight and came out a bit low. Round to 7 was a good choice. Came out one platform NW on 8 -wasn't really sure what to use as an AP here. 9 had potential to be hard but was visible from a long way off.

No problems to 14, then happy with long leg route and implementation...although actaully looking at it now, I think round is better.

Happy to 21; then 22 was my mispunch...I read it at the time as "platform in a reentrant" and when I saw a control in a reentrant in about the right place, I didn't check. Retrospectively I should've noticed that the correct control was in a much smaller reentrant, and that I didn't cross another reentrant when leaving the control...needless to say I noticed neither of these things.

Luckily this didn't detract from my enjoyment as I didn't realise it had happened.

'actual' mistakes on 23 when I came out on the wrong platform and had no idea which it was. Only 90m away from the control but had no idea. I'm pleased that I overruled the feeling that I should run around like a headless chicken for a bit, and made myself stand still and think about where I must be. This was successful but lost a lot of time.

Slight wobble on 28 when I went to the platform rather than the miniscule reentrant (come on Richard, you definitely had the opportunity to use "niche" here) but worked it out ok (I did check 29 of the 30 codes...).

So in terms of major navigational mistakes, only really one, which is good (although one too many, obvs).

Definitely will be doing more code checking in future though - since even when I'm 100% certain I'm in the right place, turns out unsurprisingly that I can still be wrong!

Saturday Mar 5, 2016 #

Orienteering - Forest race (Welsh Champs Pwll Du) 32:34 [5] 5.2 km (6:16 / km) +142m 5:31 / km
shoes: X-Talon 190 (orange)[9.5]

One big mistake as per usual; rest good.

Bit off on #1 getting used to 1:7.5 from 1:15 last week.
Then pretty good until #11, wasn't sure of position and picked the wrong 50:50 choice (1 min)

Big mistake was #12, caught someone and was trying to get away, but they weren't navigating and just followed me, unfortunately I didn't really know where we were so we both overshot and came out on the path, then wasn't sure exactly where so again, picked the wrong 50:50 the first time (3 mins). Rest good.

The guy apologized for putting me under pressure - which he did do - but I should've been able to deal with it and I failed :(

Running - Trail race (Gwent League XC Brecon) 40:29 [5] 9.95 km (4:04 / km) +44m 3:59 / km
shoes: Nike Zoom Rival XC

Bit disappointed for this to be 25 secs slower than last year, in similar conditions I think. But 50th place is another new top position (in the A team again!) - albeit with a significantly reduced field size.

The A team is leading the top division but with a very narrow margin - and with none of our stars available it was always going to be close to see if we could maintain it...
It was really nice for the coaches to care about how I was doing since it was actually relevant! - every place counted. They were running about getting really passionate which was great to see.

Epic sprint finish for 50th place (which no-one other than me and the other guy will care about) where he was ahead but I was closing, he turned around and saw me and accelerated, but then clearly thought he'd done enough and slowed again and I nipped past him on the line to the cry of 'Bristol gets it' from the line judge.always run to the line!

Thanks to Phil and Paul for turning up to support, your encouragement definitely helped me push that bit harder :)

Thursday Mar 3, 2016 #

Running - Road/Track race (Handicap 5k-little stoke) 18:32 [5] 4.95 km (3:45 / km) +22m 3:40 / km
ahr:157 max:169 shoes: Asics Nimbus 17

Set off a bit faster than last time and I think that's why it's a bit faster overall; have got into pacing-for-intervals so well that I've probably stopped running hard enough in races...
3:39,45,47,51,29

Pretty sure my maximum HR is 170 which seems very low although not unbelievably so. My GPS wants me to do a lactate threshold test and that requires pushing very hard, so we'll see what happens then.
