Running race (Purdown Pursuit) 43:10 [5] 10.1 km (4:16 / km) +250m 3:48 / km
ahr:155 max:168 shoes: X-Talon 190 (orange)[9.5]

20s slower than Phil's time from last year unfortunately...

Felt tough but performance good against other people.Probably too dry for the xtalons, trainers would've been fine.

Good, fun course. Rest tomorrow then Scotland on Sat :)

Running race (Bath Very Long HM) 2:06:54 [5] 26.55 km (4:47 / km) +700m 4:13 / km
ahr:151 max:171

This was much better than last time (despite my dire warning to myself not to do it again (which I ignored)).

The torrential rain 5 minutes before the start let up to a light drizzle throughout the race, which wasn't unpleasant. Pretty wet underfoot which suited me.

Much better signage this year (and also looking at the O map and working out both where we went wrong last year and the correct route) meant no getting lost - hooray!

Leading till about 7k; deliberately slowed down on the hill down from the uni since it was on-road. Caught by Imanol (another B+W) and we ran the next 4k together along the canal. I was convinced we had a B+W 1,2 sewn up; he started to pull away up the hill and then suddenly we were both passed by someone who was clearly an uphill specialist.

Him and Imanol then disappeared totally up the hill and I didn't see them for ages; then we had some lovely off road downhill which I destroyed to overtake them both at around 14k. They were both wearing road shoes which had a lot to do with this.

They both disappeared again immediately up the next hill, but I caught Imanol at another downhill offroad muddy steps section at 17.5k or so and stayed ahead until 20k unfortunately for me the last downhill was on the road and he caught me back up again, and was quicker along the canal.

REally pleased with my 4k along the canal at the end; running about 4:15s which were 5 min ks last year, not bad after 20k with lots of hills I don't think.

Even managed to keep running up the hill to Bath Uni (albeit at 6 min ks) but it was a stagger last year, so really pleased.

Solid 3rd place, and not too dead at the end.

50 secs down on Imanol and a massive 5 mins down on the leader - however apparently he does ironmans, so...

Orienteering race (Chepstow urban) 32:50 [5] 7.4 km (4:26 / km) +157m 4:01 / km
ahr:139 max:169 shoes: Adidas Boost

3rd (probably), about 10s down on Tom, a few small mistakes

1 - didn't run diagonal,went complicated way unnecessarily,15s
15 - one entrance too early, 15s
16 - missed an alleyway (understandable) and also a large park (unforgivable) and so chose very poor route - 30s

Some slight faffing due to incorrect symbol sizes but wasn't that bad.

1 min lost; Tom lost 30s or so on 5,so if we'd both have been clean I think I might just have edged him today, but we were seconds apart on most splits.

Wasn't planning on going to the last one in the league but might have to now to secure the victory - I have a 1,2,3 and Tom has a 1,2 so just needs a 2nd to win, which is pretty certain unless I go...

Orienteering race (BOK Urban little stoke) 39:17 [5] 9.5 km (4:08 / km) +107m 3:55 / km
ahr:155 max:169 shoes: Adidas Boost

4th

One disastrous 2 min error, otherwise a couple of bad choices but not too bad. Head not really in the game, though, not sure why.

3 - lost concentration planning 4 and turned left too early up road rather than path, 20s
5 - should've gone round road, instead didn't make a decision soon enough and so did half of the straighter route and then bailed anyway, 30s
11 - distracted by Paul...but just not concentrating enough anyway.and I need to be able to deal with distractions!! Missed the best route to the south as had folded that edge...then turned right instead of left and added at least 500m distance...shocking.I think the main reason for this is probably knowing the area too well having lived on the map for quite a while.2 min loss.

No other real mistakes, so 3 mins lost, feels about right as that would put me somewhere near Tom, but he deserved to beat me today.

Running race (Eastville park 3x1m relay) 5:33 [5] 1.0 mi (5:33 / mi) +22m 5:12 / mi
ahr:156 max:173 shoes: Saucony Virrata 2

2nd place (leg and team) out of 40 or so teams

Set off ludicrously fast (2:40 ks) and maintained sub 3 min pace for a minute or so down the hill...then regretted that and dropped to 4 min pace or so up some of the hill.

Good to see both Tom and Charlie doing very similar times to finish in a solid 2nd...miles behind our 'A' team though!

We have some very impressive juniors who were averaging 6:10 each which is scarily fast for primary school kids...

Running intervals (Off road intervals) 25:13 [4] 4.93 km (5:07 / km) +108m 4:37 / km
ahr:135 max:163 shoes: Saucony Kinvara 4

3x1 mile relay tomorrow and didn't want to get shouted at by Chris again (also vaguely picking up on that intervals before a race aren't the best idea), so did my own short interval session.

1100m,700m,600m,1100m (90s)

1100s - 4:25,18
700 - 2:31
600 - 2:22

On grass, with a hill, not exact distances.will use these as a benchmark...

Running race (Brean Down 10k) 43:07 [5] 10.0 km (4:19 / km) +375m 3:38 / km
ahr:161 max:174

1st

http://www.webscorer.com/racedetails?raceid=47170&...

Admittedly not a high-class field - but there were another couple of reasonable guys and we had a battle at the front. I was leading up the first hill but then into third along the top of the down and up the undulations - then into 2nd on the downhill and into first about 3.5k - then stayed ahead for the 2nd lap.

Excellent scenery - prettiest 10k ever? Maybe.

Lots of climb for a trail race.

Friday Jul 17, 2015 #

Note

Thinking about not running tonight; bit of left Achilles pain...and I've done the Towpath thrice anyway. I think b and w will probably be ok without me.

Orienteering race (BOK Urban Pomphrey) 33:57 [5] 7.59 km (4:28 / km) +100m 4:12 / km
ahr:146 max:165 shoes: Saucony Virrata 2

2nd, 2.5mins behind Adam.

Pretty good. Very hesitant on 3, wanted to make sure was definitely going to end up on the right side, 10s.then careful to 5 going via both the open strip and the bench...with hindsight the bench was the better AP so should've just used that.

Then TOO safe to 6 going over and down the steps rather than along the path...bad choice.20s lost there.

However,I'm pleased with how I did in this area because it's exactly the type of terrain where I often lose lots of time, so I think staying safe and accepting small losses is the right tactic for me.

The other 2 mins just running speed,a few secs per control.missed one best route to 17 but not a lot in it.missed another to 21 which was probably 10s better.

Very proud of my prodigy Jason winning the medium course!

Running race (Handicap 5k-little stoke) 18:24 [5] 5.0 km (3:41 / km) +19m 3:37 / km
ahr:160 max:171 shoes: Saucony Virrata 2

Organised a handicap race with people from work.

I lost.

Only one second below my predicted time - but everyone else was under, the winner by about 90s! So it wasn't as fun as it could've been...but they all seemed to love it and want to do it monthly! Fair enough.should be much closer next time if we use this time's times as the handicaps.

6 x 1km. Probably should've done the full 8 but decided to be sensible for once!
Paced well so felt ok.
All between 3:30 and 3:35.

Good planning and good map make Mark a happy boy :)

Overshot a bit on the way to 1 (1:5 yday and 1:4 today) but not major. Not shortest route to 3 but definitely simplest, enabled some planning of 4 and 5.4 in slightly wrong place, but it was in a nicer place so that's okay...

A few minor hesitations and not quite the best route in the long leg, but pretty happy until 19 (lucky perhaps on 15; similar to yesterday I thought it was a 50:50 leg when it wasn't; picked the right 50 this time though)

30s compass error at 19, disoriented after punching 18 and thought the path NE was the ride NW, relocated after crossing the unexpected ditch...

Wasn't sure from description what side of fence 20 would be on so faffed a bit.some unnecessary fence climbing to 23.

But overall pretty clean similar to yesterday, only really that 30s loss. Adam's time impressive as usual...

Thanks Richard; enjoyed myself

Orienteering race (Marlborough urban) 41:37 [5] 9.0 km (4:37 / km) +174m 4:13 / km
ahr:160 max:168 shoes: Saucony Virrata 2

This was great. Very impressed with the planning, kept the interest and required concentration up throughout and good mix of leg lengths.

Bit tentative on 9 and lucky to guess the right alleyway.
Small mistake on 21, didn't plan an exit route and so started to come out the way I went in, then looked at the ground rather than the map to ascertain if I could get through or not; looked hard so just went all the way round the building, but actually would've been fine.30s

Congratulating myself on 41 for making it round pretty much error free-too early-decided when planning it that it was a 50 50 leg but it was actually a trap leg...which I fell into after picking the wrong 50! 30s

So only a minute loss and 3 mins down on Adam, pretty good run and very enjoyable.

I have to admit, after 2 days off I did feel like my running was much better...I will try and do fewer races

Maybe.

Running 17:43 [3] 3.7 km (4:47 / km) +65m 4:24 / km

Running 16:53 [2] 2.6 km (6:30 / km) +41m 6:01 / km
shoes: Saucony Kinvara 4

Very slow jog, looking at my local field considering it for off road intervals...the slightly smaller loop is about 600m and the other about 700m; might set them up as Strava segments of I can work out how to do that...

Orienteering race (BOK Urban chew stoke) 44:58 [3] 8.8 km (5:07 / km) +142m 4:44 / km
ahr:140 max:154

Didn't really enjoy this unfortunately.

Map was pretty bad. lost 5 minutes (literally) on number 2 where a hedge has been drawn on in black pen, and then didn't have much confidence in it after that so stopped putting maximum effort in.listing all the other annoyances would just be depressing - but my pet peeve is that if you're making an urban map, use urban symbols, don't just mix and match, and try to use the right size symbols for the scale you've chosen.I've never mapped anywhere, so I'm certainly not criticizing the effort that goes into these maps, but it doesn't seem like rocket science to get the simple things right. I'd rather have fewer, higher quality events.should BOK introduce some kind of quality control?I think this is a good idea.

Note

Turns out my 2m time was 11:53 which is only 14s down on before, so not as bad as I thought.result!

http://uk.srichinmoyraces.org/node/2082/previous-r...

Note

Winsplits 'times without mistakes' puts me in third behind Adam and Clive, so not too bad overall as both my mistakes can easily be blamed on the map :)

Really feeling intervals (and possibly the last 12 days) in the legs now. This was rubbish, and 25s slower than last time.

Miles were about 5:58,6:07

O tomorrow, and then well deserved rest on Thursday I think.

ahr:156 max:171 shoes: X-Talon 190 (orange)[9.5]

http://www.movescount.com/moves/move68114471#navig...

Not as flat as I was expecting...course went up the hill by the house that I walked up yesterday in the club champs...twice! Did manage to keep running both times although it was a close-run* thing. 50m climb in 300m - sounds easy when put like that.

With three guys from Bitton and a Team Bath for the first 2k or so, then went past one of the Bittons (who I recognised; he has really thin arms and he always sets off too fast) and the TB (up the hill). At the top, the two Bittons disappeared into the distance and I spent the rest of the race in 3rd with at least a minute in either direction.

Although apparently I came 2nd because the leader got lost - feel sorry for him because he was pretty far ahead; but I've had my fair share of getting lost in trail races, so I'll take it.

Not that warm; but still pretty warm. Hard work for the slow time! Lots of bends in the meadow as well. But it was very pretty I suppose.

Running race (BOK club championships) 28:04 [5] 5.25 km (5:21 / km) +195m 4:31 / km
ahr:153 max:164

600/600 points.

Route chosen not great, probably could have avoided some of the climb.convinced for a while I'd missed a control, but turned out I'd got it at the beginning.hooray!

Walked up the hill which was pretty depressing; generally feeling unfit and found it tough running through the grass.

Friday Jul 3, 2015 #

Running (Towpath 10k) 38:52 [4] 9.87 km (3:56 / km) +39m 3:52 / km
shoes: Saucony Virrata 2

I decided to treat this as a training run and aim for negative splits, first 5k in 20:00 and second 5k as fast as possible.

To my intense surprise this was pretty successful. I aimed for 4 min ks and was never more than 5s up or down, and was at 5k at 19:52.

Then did the second 5k in 19:00, passing people all the way (which was psychologically great). By the end I was catching and passing people who I'd normally be racing the whole way round.

The lesson is definitely start slower! Not as much as this perhaps though; still 100s off a PB, but definitely worth bearing in mind.

Note

45 miles (72km) this week. It's been a busy one. I can't imagine doing that much every week - but there are people out there doing double. Nutters.

Running race (Dundry Thunder) 44:40 [5] 10.2 km (4:23 / km) +301m 3:49 / km
ahr:152 max:168

5th place - very pleased.

First climb felt dreadful, and very hard to get any pace back afterwards, but took the downhill steady and caught a few on the final hill. Lots of climb for a 10k non-fell race!

Won a bottle of wine for 3rd senior male :)

Wednesday Jul 1, 2015 #

Orienteering race (BOK Urban Portishead) 42:26 [5] 9.06 km (4:41 / km) +147m 4:20 / km
ahr:149 max:161 shoes: Saucony Virrata 2

I haven't made a significant mistake in an urban race for ages and had consequently become overconfident.

Therefore I deserved this.

My few minutes revision of the map from last year in the car before the start was extremely counter-productive, as a crossable fence last year turned into an uncrossable fence this year. (90s loss on number 1)

Took some safe routes round the edges of things which weren't always the fastest but overall happy with all choices up to 13.

Lured into a false sense of security by the planner after a lot of easy controls and failed to check description for 14 - went to the wrong side, realised and then missed the way back out, eventually realised...(60s at least)

Happy with rest although didn't consider western route to 26 which may have been better since avoids the steps.

7 or so mins behind Adam, 3 behind Tom, 3 annoying seconds behind Matt...the urban league title is all to play for with 3 events left!
