Running - Trail race (Saunders MM Day 1) 7:30:14 [5] 39.51 km (11:24 / km) +1974m 9:07 / km
ahr:119 max:156 shoes: X-talon 212 (blk/flro) - Nov17

First MM with Robbie. Hot. Equalised our bags at 5.6kgs each.

Bowfell course (longest linear course) - possibly a bit optimistic with Robbie's MM virginity, but given the 2nd place on Kirkfell last year it seemed the only option.

Not the best prep with being on holiday and then lots of short races and no long runs for ages, but hoping the longer runs earlier in the seasons would see us through.

Started really well for first 2 controls with perfect nav. Visibility amazing which helped a lot. First route choice leg #3 I think we did okay; not too dissimilar from the winners' route. Mistake on 4 I think caused by deviating around bracken and then over-correcting, and then thinking we'd gone about twice as far as actual and then getting stuck in a load of rocks. Basically good plan; badly implemented. Failed to use edge of forest until waaay too late. Probably over-confident from first 3 legs!

#5 good, but compass mistake on #6, I think caused by lots of the writing on the map being orientated to North as normal, but some writing such as the names of streams, not. Then if the map is folded and only a stream name is visible, it makes North look like it's somewhere else...
Took too long to realise we were in a valley rather than on a ridge I had just been pointing at, and took a long time to work out what on earth had happened. Then had to climb 100m extra for our trouble. Not good. A shame because the contouring at the start had been bang-on and the rest of the leg went well too.

Route choice to #8 of all-the-way-around was the only thing we could face on tired legs, and even then the 200m climb to the finish nearly finished us off. Winners' route looks good here and not a choice we considered.

2 hours down! Even allowing for 30 mins of mistakes from us, Alistair/Thomas' time is pretty amazing; 1.5 hours just in fitness. Kudos to them.

No injuries other than a bottom-of-foot blister (surprising in itself since not a usual blister location; possibly made more likely due to dehydration or something?), otherwise body feeling ok. I think the weight-training definitely helped as didn't feel like the bag was a massive hindrance.

Nice campsite by a river. Can't remember the last time I sat in a river for half an hour and it didn't feel remotely cold.

Running - Trail race (SM #4 Buxton) 34:06 [5] 7.6 km (4:29 / km) +237m 3:53 / km
ahr:114 max:131 shoes: Inov-8 Roclite 290 (grey)

I think as well as wrist-based HR not being able to handle the cold, it also can't handle the heat!

New shoes delivered just in time for this which was excellent as they were perfect for the conditions and they fit like proverbial gloves :)

Actually a really nice race, bit of grass, very small amount of fell, mostly woodland trails. Good to be in the shade for a lot of it on another hot evening. Paced it to my strengths, let people get past on the first uphill, flew past on the long down, let them past again on the next up,and then took them on the really steep up. Road runners can't do steep.

I think I was 7th ish.

Running - Road/Track (Langley 7 test route) 1:30:00 [3] 14.6 km (6:10 / km) +422m 5:23 / km
ahr:115 max:151 shoes: Salomon Fellraiser

The new Langley 7 route; very slowly with lots of doubling back.
I hadn't realised it was all road or I'd have worn different shoes...
Probably the last outing for the Fellraisers anyway so glad that they made it to 500km; not a bad shoe really but too many deficiencies (the main one being the water absorption/squeaking issue).

The race is in November and is entirely hill; updownupdownupdown seemingly forever... I'd probably seems shorter when doing it faster. But it will be a very tough race.

Very hot evening so didn't mind the sedate pace.

Orienteering - Urban race (Skegness urban) 57:56 [5] 12.9 km (4:29 / km) +30m 4:26 / km
ahr:142 max:160 shoes: On Cloudace

2nd: http://www.log.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#88&cours...

http://www.logonline.org.uk/Result/2018/SKEGNESS18...

Excellent run, only made 1 mistake (nice lap of a scenic lake 26-27, lost less than 30s), some route choices might have been slightly better to go differently but I'm happy with my decisions. Only 60s behind Leon. A shame not to see a bit more competition on MOpen!

Well planned courses, kept to the interesting bits as much as possible and the bits included to add the distances tended to be good route choice legs.

Orienteering - Urban race (Belvoir Park Estate) 14:38 [5] 3.73 km (3:55 / km) +17m 3:50 / km
ahr:127 max:148 shoes: On Cloudace

Mass start, gaffled. 5th.

Wrong choice at start trying to be fast rather than detailed enough, and that pattern continued, missed a lot of cut throughs. Lost 20s on 7 and 10 more on 9 which took me out of contention for 3rd (probably where I should've been on paper) although not much shame in losing to the 2 GB girls in 3rd and 4th.

Good fun.

I think the shoe designer probably put too much effort into making then look good and not enough into making them the same shape as feet.

Orienteering - Urban race (Cattle Market Maze O) 9:40 [1] 0.45 km (21:29 / km) +9m 19:32 / km
ahr:104 max:121 shoes: On Cloudace

Great fun. I did terribly.

I've never seen 'please wash hands after finishing' on a map before!

Orienteering - Urban race (Louth) 37:17 [5] 8.51 km (4:23 / km) +38m 4:17 / km
ahr:114 max:133 shoes: On Cloudace

Good event, longer than I expected for a middle distance although times are about right. A few choices that are probably 50:50 that I didn't faff over, but 24 missed the best route and lost a bit of time. Saw the trap which caught out pretty much every one on any course that I've spoken to :)
Mistake on 6 where I stopped 50m away from the control and was confused, having oversimplified due to focusing on the thick black lines to the detriment of everything else.otherwise good.

Shoes growing on me a bit.

Running - Road/Track hills (RW Shoe Test #1) 27:55 [3] 5.76 km (4:51 / km) +185m 4:11 / km
ahr:125 max:147 shoes: On Cloudace

Had a go running up/down Blaze Hill since I drive up all the time and it's very steep in places.

Good first test of the new test shoes. Apparently they cost £170.

Uphill they didn't feel anything special, a bit heavy if anything, but they were very floaty on the flat and down. They aren't going to be fast but I do feel like I could run a very long way in them. Time will tell!

Running - Trail race (SM #3 Shutlingsloe) 27:45 [5] 5.77 km (4:49 / km) +289m 3:51 / km

Edit: 9th
https://www.staffsmoorlands-ac.co.uk/our-races/sum...

Trailrocs again

Short and sharp, paced it ok I think, slowed a lot on the steep bits and let people come past but then overtook again on the flatter bits. Lost some time when it became surprisingly singletrack for a bit but got past all those people later on.
Overtook exactly zero people on the downhill second half despite running my fastest ever mile (5:03) - too spread out by then. Lost some time taking the rocks rather than the path off the top too as didn't realise what was compulsory and what wasn't.
Good fun, no idea how I did position-wise. Hopefully I can make it to 6 races in the series to get the tee-shirt :)

There are too many excuses available at the moment.
Made puff pastry (note to self: not worth it; just buy it) and put up two towel rails.

Orienteering - Forest race (Brereton Heath) 37:12 [4] 6.63 km (5:37 / km) +25m 5:30 / km
ahr:134 max:160 shoes: X-talon 212 (blk/flro) - Nov17

Vegetation at the start looked dire and I resolved to stay on the paths. However this was a terrible tactic as actually the vegetation was fine and there were paths everywhere to the extent that none were reliable.
So 1 was a disaster as I had the approach all wrong, relocated via 16 (on the other side of the map) and probably lost a minute. Resolved to ignore the paths and use compass, and this worked excellently. Went to 4 before 3 (line crossing issue) and lost another minute, but that's a different issue!

After that didn't really do a lot wrong other than bad lines through the undergrowth sometimes, but that's just luck.I was happy that I did exactly what I'm always wishing I would do - adapt to the map and terrain rather than just moaning about it.

Running - Trail tempo (Evening run) 33:49 [3] 6.37 km (5:19 / km) +244m 4:27 / km
ahr:153 max:173 shoes: Nike Pegasus 32

Today everyone at work was encouraged to bring in food from their nominated world cup countries; consequently I've eaten exclusively cake today including 4 different types of custard tart.

Had to get out to burn off some sugar! Nice evening; tried to go up hills where they presented themselves.

Orienteering - Urban race (The Vale) 18:24 [5] 3.69 km (4:59 / km) +29m 4:48 / km
ahr:140 max:156 shoes: Salomon Fellraiser

http://www.harlequins.org.uk/results/20180617_bham...

Bit more annoyed with this one - lost 30s on 4 where the CD was 'tower' but there was no tower on the map - pretty sure this is not allowed. Anyway it was up some steps round a corner in a place that looked very much OOB. Anyone who saw anyone else coming out of/into this would have had a massive advantage - I didn't. Classic CD just meant to catch you out - "stairs top" would have been much fairer. The control circle isn't even centered where the control was.

Lost my own 15s on 6 not reading the CD and going to the S, then climbing up the underside of the bridge through the undergrowth and over a technically crossable fence (although probably not one the mapper thought people would cross, in summer at least).

Bad route on 9, think N was better, another 15s there. Similarly on 12, didn't read CD until too late after had made routechoice decision. Need to read CD on previous leg for dubious controls. Another 15s.

Extra circuitous route to take in the start on 13 but not much time lost.

So I reckon maybe 45s my fault and 30s unfair, 1 min 15 faster would put me as in the morning just at the front of the also-rans. Can only really complain about the 30 though, which wouldn't have changed my position...

Orienteering - Urban race (Birmingham University) 22:37 [5] 4.48 km (5:03 / km) +45m 4:48 / km
ahr:139 max:159 shoes: Adidas Adios 3

http://www.harlequins.org.uk/results/20180617_bham...

Terrible start. Lots of control numbers (with white border, which could have done with yesterday; clearly HOC do know how to do it!) but with bent control lines rather than gaps made it very hard to see what was going on.

Went
S - 14 - 1 - 14 - 2
which is pretty grim. Was good planning to be fair. First mistake probably because thought of the start rather than the start kite on the map and so thought I'd been through a gap whereas I actually needed two gaps from the actual start rather than just where it was marked on the map.
No excuse for going back to 14 a second time!

Aside from that initial rubbishness, one no-fault mistake on 6 where the map implies you can get to the control from both sides of the bridge, but actually one side goes into a building and so that isn't possible.

Otherwise good but too much time (30s) lost at the beginning to do very well - could have been 4th, at the front of the non-elites, which is probably fair.

Orienteering - Urban race (Castle Vale) 50:03 [5] 11.38 km (4:24 / km) +30m 4:20 / km
ahr:154 max:184 shoes: Adidas Adios 3

3rd: http://www.harlequins.org.uk/results/20180616_cast...

Rescheduled urban league 2017 final. 2nd in league...as usual.

Couple of mistakes, both route choice, one big one (about a minute), avoided a trap and promptly fell into a different one. Otherwise good, and felt to be running ok.

Trailrocs

Turns out the altitude effect only lasts for one race :( still, at least used it on one with a trophy!

This race felt tough although made worse by some kind of trapped burp I couldn't release for the 2nd half which slowed me down a bit and made running pretty uncomfortable. Probably not enough to make up a place though. Outsprinted someone on the last few hundred meters which was nice.

Probably half of this was road. The other half was nice.

Orienteering - Forest race (Polly Lander O) 1:27:42 [5] 15.37 km (5:42 / km) +510m 4:54 / km
ahr:136 max:160 shoes: Nike Pegasus 32

That must be what it's like to take EPO? Clear effects of being at 3000m+ for the past week - zero lactic acid for the entire run,it was great. Still got out of breath but no muscle issues whatsoever. I wish the effects were permanent!

1st by about 10 mins (2 hour score, but compulsory #1 to split people up led to a natural route). Organised by running club so on 1:25k map, but had proper kites and pin punching. All controls easy - basically a long Yellow course.

Won a trophy and some beer.

Running - Road/Track (Down from Machu Picchu) 28:38 [3] 3.71 km (7:43 / km) +76m 7:00 / km
ahr:121 max:148

This was going to be a walk but rest of group elected to get the bus down, so decided to run it.
Descended about a million steps before the long drag back up to the hotel. Felt pretty good down the steps for 5th on the Strava segment, could definitely win it with another attempt but doubt I'll be back somehow...
Beat the bus down, which was the main thing and surprised everyone. Smashed the estimated time of 'an hour' quoted by the guide.

Also hiked Machu Picchu mountain (600m ascent; 40 mins ish) and to the Sun gate, and ran down from the Sun gate too getting some admiring comments from tourists (like 'that guy is going to die') and more favourably ('that is SO cool').

Views and overall experience amazing.

Running - Road/Track (Pre-breakfast jog) 15:35 [3] 2.64 km (5:54 / km) +82m 5:07 / km
ahr:137 max:157

Barely feeling the altitude at all now (2900m here) and stopped taking the pills yesterday.
Wanted to get up at 5 and climb a mountain again but no-one wanted to come with me, so I went for the lie-in instead.

Thursday Jun 7, 2018 #

Walking (Rainbow Mountain) 3:19:54 [3] 10.56 km (18:56 / km) +517m 15:12 / km
ahr:90 max:138

5200m altitude a bit tough. Felt like once you stopped it was really tough to get going again; lactic hit immediately.
Otherwise fine really. Fared better than a lot of people in the group; of the 14 of us I think 10 resorted to riding horses at some point and only 2 of us made it to the actual summit.

Amazing scenery.

Wednesday Jun 6, 2018 #

Running - Trail hills (Pre-breakfast mountain) 1:27:25 [3] 3.6 km (24:17 / km) +447m 14:59 / km
ahr:123 max:158

Got up at 5am to climb the mountain next to the hotel; it looked on Google maps like there was a vague trail.

It was very vague - kept losing it. But amazing to watch the sunrise at 6am. Bit sketchy on the way down when I found myself at the top of cliffs a few times, just about made it though. Kept stopping to take photos and things.hopefully can persuade someone else to come up when we're back here in a few days - didn't get to the top as it started to get a bit dangerous and I was on my own with no gear.

Tuesday Jun 5, 2018 #

Running - Trail (Peru high altitude ) 56:08 [4] 7.77 km (7:13 / km) +64m 6:56 / km
ahr:114 max:146

At 3500m you can really feel it.

Rest of the group was doing more MTB but I fancied a run. Amazing scenery. The guide (and the rest of the group) thought I was mental.

Lots of stops to allow the slow bikers to catch up - I was significantly ahead of them even downhill.

Cycling (Peru MTB) 29:51 [3] 6.62 km (13.3 kph) +72m
ahr:107 max:143

Pretty fun actually, never done it on a bike with suspension and proper offroad tyres. The group was pretty slow though so lots of stopping to let them catch up with the front people.

Sunday Jun 3, 2018 #

Running - Road/Track hills (Cusco) 39:39 [3] 6.23 km (6:22 / km) +203m 5:28 / km
ahr:151 max:162

Getting used to the altitude; not affecting me as much as expected (but then again, only just arrived).
Basically up a hill, down again, then a bit of faffing trying to find the hotel.

Would make the best city for an urban I have an l ever been.
