Orienteering race 1:25:59 [3] 7.64 km (11:16 / km) +94m 10:37 / km

World Masters Orienteering Championships Forest Long Final, Foresta Umbra. M55A, 5.9 km, 290 m. 44/76 in 82:54. Only 12 controls in 5.9 km, compared to 13 controls in 3.9 km yesterday, with a couple of long legs through the best of the terrain. Set out steadily hoping for 65 mins but expecting 75 mins, but things went wrong when I pulled a large (and evidently rotten!) tree down onto myself leaving 3 and fell backwards onto some rocks. Struggled slowly round the rest of the course with a sore back trying not to bend sideways if I could help it, but with only one miss (at number 10, ironically close to yesterday's leg 6-7, when I missread the map in the circle and lost about 3:00). Not sure how much quicker I could have gone without the tree incident, but if definitely made a difference. However, others clearly found it hard going and I was surprised to finish as high as 44th.

Orienteering race 45:43 [4] 4.34 km (10:31 / km) +95m 9:29 / km

World Masters Orienteering Championships Forest Middle Final, Foresta Umbra. M55A, 3.9 km, 170 m. 39/80 in 42:40. Being the slowest qualifier, and hence the first starter, meant that I had the course to myself. I was determined to make up for my errors in the qualification event and ran a very steady solo race with only one small wobble at 9 (-0:30?), and so - as first finisher - for a few glorious moments I was leading a World Champs A Final! Perhaps I should have run faster, and maybe having others around would have spurred me to do so, but I enjoyed this so much more than yesterday!

Orienteering race 1:17:13 [4] 6.86 km (11:16 / km) +95m 10:32 / km

World Masters Orienteering Championships Forest Qualification, Foresta Umbra. M55-1, 5.1 km, 245 m. 27/61 in 75:12. Whoa! The rocky "negative" terrain with many depressions was totally unlike the model event and I (like many others!) was immediately struggling. I wobbled hesistantly into control 1 without really knowing where I was (-1:00?), missed control 2 slightly (-0.30?), then made a big mistake on the leg to control 4 and has no clue where I was before managing to relocate (-7:00?). Thereafter I got my act together a bit and made my way slowly round the rest of the course fairly cleanly except for a miss at 13 (-3:00?) due to losing concentration as I started to get tired. However, other were clearly equally useless as I was as I just squeaked into the A final as the slowest of the 81 qualifiers!

World Masters Orienteering Championships Forest Model, Foresta Umbra. Slow jog checking out the terrain for the forest events, but the rolling contours didn't really prepare us for what was to come!

Sprint Orienteering race 18:22 [5] 2.62 km (7:01 / km) +67m 6:13 / km
ahr:154 max:174

World Masters Orienteering Championships Sprint Final, Vieste. M55A, 2.6 km, 85 m. 34/80 in 16:20. Non-optimum route climbing two sets of steep steps 3-4, a little extra climb 6-7, and almost missed the correct alley 15-16, but otherwise a fairly clean and fairly quick run through the roads, steps and alleys of the old town. Jon X (16/80 in 14:21) finished one second behind me.
