Adventure Race race (Max 24Hr Solo) 18:06:00 [5]

By far one of the toughest races ive done
The start was at Del rio resort in wisemans ferry where we started with a mtb leg up and around Bicentenary Rd, picking up one check point and then out along wheelbarrow ridge track through Parr state conservation area.
TA1 was a little way along the trail were we had to change to an optional rogaine where you could pick up as many of the 6 check points with each checkpoint having a dif time bonus, adding up to a total of 6 hrs.
Ben and i headed out on this together deciding it would be better to work together. We picked up all 6 but on the way back to TA i slowed to get some food and water into me as it was bloody hot and i was feeling it. When i came in ben was leaving so i got changed and jumped back on the bike for the next mtbo section. I thought i had enough water so didnt fill up the bladder.... I caught ben a few km down the road and he looked to be doing to tough so i kept going. At the next checkpoint i was starting to get a few cramps when getting off the bike. I road the next part well until we turned of the main road and headed up a small fire trail which was sandy, rock and shit. I was getting more cramps now so had a mouth full of rock salt i had with me, put it in my mouth and went to drink it down with water but i was empty, so just swallowed it... 5 min later i was spewing my guts up until a few other camp along and helped me out with some water. I got going again but then had a massive hike a bike out of this gorge which again destroyed me. I layed down a few times and tried to eat so food, expecting to soon seen Fatrat catch up, but he was too busy having a swim back down in the gorge. I got to the top and finished off the next 5km well, only stopping for a mechanical which an official helped me fix.
The next TA was supported so i sat there for a good 20min and ate heaps, about 6 potatoes, coke and rice pudding. As i was about to leave ben rolled on in... I was pretty stuffed here only after about 5 hrs and the only thing that made me continue was that the next leg was a swim/trek down the colo river. I wanted a swim so bad.
This section took ages and even know the water was refreshing, it was really frustrating and hard going.. I was pushing pretty hard but it was slow catching people because you would go one way, either swim or bush bash along the edge and you would catch people, and then i would get stuck and they would see that and go another way.. Teams were joking by the end that they were using me, waiting to see which way id go.
I got to the last checkpoint on the river just as it was getting dark. We then had to climb up 500m onto the ridge and another 10km back to the next TA. The track at the top was tough to follow, but i got on the back of a couple that had climbed up to the ridge earlier to save pushing down the river. Soon there was about 10 of us as we picked up people trying to find the next check point. I was happy just to sit at the back and follow. I was feeling ok again and there were a few other solo races in the group so i ran the last 5km and got a good gap on them.
The next leg was a mtb back down to the colo river mainly down hill. I pushed this pretty hard and there was a few time coming off the top where i hit some sandy sections which were imposable to see. About 2km from the next TA i turned left over this old bridge which had all these random planks on it, with a nice gap perfect size for my wheel to fit right into. I went down hard. I was stuck under my bike cramping and it took a little bit to get up.
The next leg was a paddle. It was only down the river picking up a few checkpoints, but there was heaps of mist coming off the water and for the majority of the way you could see more than 5m in front, and the headlight just reflected back at you. I was hurting down here and another solo guy that i had passed on the ride got back infront.
I came off the water a couple of minutes after him. The last leg was ride back to Del rio, only a short ride 15km, but with a bastard granny gear climb. I didnt know how many bonus rogaine point this guy had so pushed hard and passed him at the top, getting the last check point just in front. I then headed down towards del rio, on what i thought was suppose to be a small fire trail but somehow ended up on a tricky section of single track. I wasnt sure if it was the right track, but i got to the finish a couple of minutes in front.
I ended up second behind Hugh Stoddard, about 2hr back.
David Simpfendorfer would have come in in second but deliberately missed a check point on the river trek as the one hour penalty saved about 3. But this left him unranked. I was contemplating this as well but i wasnt sure of the rules.

Pretty happy to have finished off so well after being dead after about 4hrs!
And to finally get one back on Fatrat. Score 1:2

Day off so headed up to Glenbrook for a morning ride.
Caught the train to Woodford, from there headed out along Bedford rd (the road you finish on when riding the anderson's) down to the river. From here headed up along the Inger trail, to the Tableland Rd. This was a pretty tough and long climb. Then headed down the Tableland Rd and onto the Anderson's trail. This is still the best of the tracks, not the most groomed but fast and awesome fun. Head back up to Woodford and then down the oaks to Glenbrook. Great day

Hard to get myself out of bed but wanted to go early due to being oncall. Plan was to ride 4 gorges so headed up to bobbin head. A moto rider had had a head on with a car which shut the road to cars. They were still trying to revive him but it didn't look good. His bike was smashed. So kept riding up to berowra waters, possibly the furthest point from home whe I got the call to come into work. I had a good few hour so no rush turned around and rode back along the pacific hwy. Pretty stuffed when I got home but some prawn risotto sorted things out.
