running warm up/down 9:30 [1] 1.0 mi (9:30 / mi)

orienteering race 38:30 [3] *** 5.8 km (6:38 / km)
15c shoes: Salomon ||v|| X 4

First leg of the JWOC relay. Very solid navigationally, except for a few bobbles, but I was absolutely beat from the past week of racing and just could not keep with the lead pack. All in all though, this was the race I feel best about, even though my placing wasn't the greatest at the end of it. Wish this week could have gone a lot better, but it is what is, and I'm super glad to have been able to experience international racing for the first time. I've found that my desire to keep on training seriously for orienteering and to go on and compete (not just participate) at WOC has been rekindled, which is incredibly exciting (as well as frustrating, considering that the Army will limit what I'm able to do for the next 5+ years). Guess we'll have to see where my career takes me, and hope that things work out for the best.

For now, though, on to WUOC!

Well. That was a shitshow. Two huge mistakes on 4 and 7 that added up to 37 min of error. Rest of the controls were ehh with some small bobbles, but those two damn controls killed me. Pretty freaking pissed off about this. Wasn't in the right mindset that I'd been in during the quali, and seriously overestimated my ability to navigate in the terrain. Gonna analyze more later when I'm not so angry at myself; for now I gotta focus on running fast and clean in the relay tomorrow.

Note

So it turns out that I probably had only around 33 minutes of error total (4 and 7 actually only contributed 18:58, according to Winsplits), I could have run around 35:14, which equates to 22nd place in the B final. Main issues: underestimating the course, not being careful enough in the green, losing map contact in the green due to the previous error, et cetera. Also noticed that I was too relaxed, and not in "racing" mode, if that makes any sense. Definitely think that contributed to messing up so badly.

Middle quail—made the B final by the skin of my teeth. Mostly clean with some dumb bobbles here and there, idk how much error, was too tired to calculate it. Excited to bring my A game and use what I learned today to run even better tomorrow, hopefully!

orienteering race 21:26 [4] *** 3.7 km (5:48 / km)

Sprint race. After finishing felt really good, then started comparing splits and doing analysis and realized it wasn't actually a good race. Made the most amount of error on 4, the cluster of controls from 5-8, and in the last few controls. 4 was due to overshooting a corridor into the control, wasting about 60s. 5-8 was just downright wacky, confusing, and slow, was unable to process that small space of map at a quick enough clip. Last few I kept on spinning around and losing track of where I was/where I was going. All in all ~2-3 min of error, plus not running at top speed bc of being wiped from yesterday. Coulda been worse, tho, but I am nowhere near satisfied.

orienteering warm up/down 15:00 [2] 1.7 km (8:49 / km)

orienteering race 1:43:33 [4] *** 10.2 km (10:09 / km)
18c shoes: Salomon ||v|| X 4

Not going to sugarcoat anything, this sucked. Calculated that I lost over 32 minutes through errors over the length of this course, which is infuriating because I theoretically could have been in the top 50, and because I feel like I could have excelled in this terrain... except I didn't. Big error controls: 1, 4, 5, 7, 11, 12 (worst error, ugh). Overall, big sources of error were not using compass carefully/at all, following people and losing map contact, and not planning adequately for the legs. Still pissed off about all this, hours after I finished, but I just gotta move on and focus on the next races, one day at a time.
